I've owned two Dell UltraSharp 32 Ultra HD 4K (UP3216Q) displays for 3 years, and using these while I wait for my XDRs, but I was so insanely surprised how well they work with the Mac Pro. I already had a TB3 to 2 Display Port at 4K 60Mhz adapter that's super rare, once I plugged them in, they work so well. Better than any Mac I've ever plugged them into, even the older Mac Pro which is what I originally bought them for had issues all the time on startup, switching the main monitor sporadically, annoying issues.

Going to miss these displays, but if XDRs are not within your budget, these are matted, and work amazingly well and they're still sold by Dell and other sources. They're great panels. They're pricey, but great, not as pricey as XDR though. Oh, the stands are really nice as well, very solid aluminum stands, not the usually cheap plastic stands.
I have a UP3216Q on one of my computers as well. Excellent display.

My ageing but elegant 30” Apple Cinema Display.

That 2005 Cinema Display looks like it could've been made in the same factory as the 2019 Mac Pro - very similar design language. Apple works its aluminium like no one.

Very nice cosy setup! Thrilled to see the LEGO Mindstorms robot, the original iPod, and the evolution of iPhones.

You have the book about Steve Jobs. You are a dedicated Apple User!

The less said about the Walter Isaacson book the better. It was rushed to market to capitalize on Jobs' death, is full of factual errors, doesn't understand its subject, and portrays very little of what actually made Jobs a significant force in personal computing history.

Jobs' family won't speak of it, and Jonathan Ive is on record as saying, "I don't recognise this person at all."

Much better books include Becoming Steve Jobs, and anything written by people who actually knew him, such as Andy Hertzfeld's riveting Revolution in the Valley: The Insanely Great Story of How the Mac Was Made.

How do you get the mac so close to the wall (cables?).

Completely off topic........
I have an old 24 cinema which I loved for years, but it developed a line of pixels the full width in the middle. Have you ever experienced this.
I have had it boxed for a couple of years, it‘s a shame to just throw it.
Would love to know if it’s fixable.

Does the machine boot with grey screen with just your old RX580 in it, or does it need the 580x in there as well?
No, it boots up with login screen just fine. The 580X is just for doing renders at the moment. I really need to upgrade the monitor to one that takes HDMI or TB3 but none are as nice or stylish as Apple's. Still, the monitor's working fine so in no mad rush.

I've been running it for a few days, including spells with ProRender, and with these two cards my MP isn't just quiet, it's absolutely silent. I think my next step is a Pegasus J2i for added storage, then I can swap in one of my old 2TB disc spinners for a total of 12TB!

yes, but 8bit color only (MacOS limitations), if you need 10bit you need Windows 10

do you use any third party program to get this resolution? any hack?

I already had an up3218k, I ended up returning it because the macOS gave no option of 8k (natively saw the monitor as two 4k screens)

Now let's not all get jealous of me and my display:

Excellent!

Apple IIc monitor, circa 1984.

Impressed you've got the setup still running and the power supply caps haven't fried. Apple built things to last in those days.

Imagine the dongle adapter combination if you really wanted to get a Mac display output onto it!

The interesting part is that monitor is connected to my IIc system for which I'm writing an assembly language memory test routine. I have a second IIc system with bad memory and this gave me an opportunity to learn some 6502 assembly language programming skills. The program has already identified the bad memory and I could easily fix it but I'm holding off as I improve the program. The system I am developing the program on also had bad memory and I was easily able to replace the bad memory chips. Ah, something to be said for the early days of computing :)

Ok I can barely afford a 12 Core Mac Pro, 1TB, no afterburner Card etc. roughly $12k maybe I’ll add RAM later and waiting on the W5700XT 16GB Graphics option. It’s a school/learning opportunity and tax write off (My CPA says done deal)

But Theres no way to tax write off a $10,000 Display just no way around it my CPA says.

So I’m asking everyone here, What Display or Displays will you guys and girls be Using ?

I‘ll be using a LG C9 4K 55” OLED and also a Asus 27” PG27AQ 4K 144hz monitor

Just mainly because I plan to trade or sell the W5700XT for a RTX 3080 when they come out.
How is the XDR $10,000.00?

Would anybody be able to recommend a good 40”+ monitor, ideally 4k, for use in a recording studio? I want to set my monitor back onto the wall so that it doesn’t interfere with my speaker / listener triangle.

I will be seated roughly 1.25m from it, so it needs to be big but also readable.

or even a 4k TV?

If a gynecologist orders a $8,000 dentist drill that probably isn't gong to fly as a business expense. The XDR is a high priced , narrow tool for a narrow market. "I needed a monitor for my headless computer" isn't going to pass any seriously real IRS audit.
...

A dentists drill is a highly specialized piece of equipment, hard to justify outside very specific circumstances.

But a powerful computer and monitor, is very justifiable by almost anyone because it is so generally useful. Almost any actual work can benefit from a truly solid reference color - publishing, photo editing, video work, even mobile development are all better served by having absolutely spot-on colors visible while creating content.

Now people might have trouble making enough money back with what they are working on to justify the price of the Apple monitor, but I really can't see anything as useful as a high quality monitor would be a problem in any audit.

I have an iMac Pro currently I use for mobile development and that is OK for now, but somewhere down the line in a few years I probably will switch to a Mac Pro and XDR monitor, and will get some good use out of both.

I use one 27-inch LG UltraFine 5K at home and one at work. Both paired with 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops. I would highly recommend these monitors.

It is unfortunate that there are not more real “retina” monitors out there. Not sure why Dell and HP discontinued their 5K models. It is also too bad that Dell’s OLED model had so many issues.

In my opinion, 32-inch monitors are too big. I like the 27-inch size, with the 5K resolution scaled to 1440p. This is 1:1 pixel scaling. Anything else doesn’t look as sharp and it makes the hardware have to work harder. Something to keep in mind.

Spend a very few bucks and file to create an LLC for your consultation skills. Now the monitor is a business expense. Done.

This is not financial or tax advice but an LLC is a business structure that is designed specifically to have no effect on taxes, it passes through taxation on to the owners. So there is no difference than writing it off as a sole proprietorship.

Section 179 doesn't make you any real money either. All it does is allow you to deduct the full price in the first year, rather than capitalizing and deducting over multiple years.

An LLC limits liability for managers and members and has great protection via the charging order. Limiting liability can save your family from financial hardship later.

Correct: Flow-through taxation: profits are distributed to the members, who are taxed on profits at their personal tax level.
