Really? I did not know that. I realize the stepping has to be the same, but whenever I hear "matched pair" I think of people matching something different (like the production number) that's actually irrelevant to performance.

indeed matched pair does not really matter with CPUs from the past 10-15 years

just as long as you get matched steppings/sSPecs then you will be ok

(you can even mix steppings on a MP2,1, but I dont recommend it as the microcode in the BootROM was never updated to properly take this into account and as such VT-x stops working)

I don’t know if there is any official definition of matched pair, I haven’t google it yet.

But my own “matched pair” definition is that pair of CPU (with same model number) can work together. Which means, same stepping.

Since X5365 has more than one stepping. So, I treat it require matched pair. Otherwise, if I say “matched pair not required for this CPU…” then some members here may pair up a B3 X5365 with a G0 X5365.

This is just my own way to handle this kind of discussion, to make sure the outcome can stay on the safe side reasonably.

Hello p,
My w3530 is soon to be replaced by the w3670 cpu.
Is there anything I need to do (mostly software) before I start the upgrade procedure?
Is the new 6core cpu going to be automatically recognized by high Sierra?

The unit (2010 5.1 Mac Pro) already has the latest bios.

thanks in advance.

Nothing about software need to be done.

As long as your cMP has any 5,1 firmware, you can upgrade to the W3670.

Nothing to do software-wise.

You'll need a 3mm hex/allen wrench with a looooong handle like this one. Rubbing alcohol to clean old paste off of the heat sink. And new thermal paste.

Is the 6-core W3690 or W3680 a lot cheaper now ?

W36xx Xeons are a lot more costly nowadays than the equivalent X56xx, a lot of servers are being decommissioned every day and the used market are full of the dual socket versions, while the single socket versions are scarce.

X5680 is very affordable today, you can get one for around $50 and it works even better than a W3680 with a single CPU tray (supports more memory).

I need to find out how much the dual processor tray is.. 50 bucks is not bad for one x5680. Right now I am using a 3.33 W3580, was going to get the W3680, but what you sent me may change my mind now. Memory wise I have 32GB 4 X 8 gig chips at 1333

Just to make even more clear, a X5680 can be used in a single CPU tray. Most people nowadays buy X56xx since the price difference is considerable.

It's what I am running in my 4/5,1 single-socket tray. Works like a champ. When I purchased it over 18 months ago, the price was about $120.

I finally got my hands on an X5690 and it seems to be working fine, the temps seem a bit high though? Is 38-40C normal for an idle temp or did I overdo it with the thermal paste? Prime95 gets pegged at 90C immediately.

A difference of 12 degrees between cpu and heatsink temperatures while idling is high, should be 2 to 5 degrees at most.

Use better paste and apply enough of it.

It turned out that I hadn’t tightened the heat sink screws enough. For reference, you need to keep going until they stop turning completely, not until you start meeting resistance.

Interesting my cpu a runs about 15deg warmer too..which one is cpu a and cpu b ?

Best to follow the Mac Pro Technician's Guide, and tighten to the proper torque. While "meeting resistance" is surely not tight enough, "stop turning completely" is pretty subjective depending on hand strength and the length of the handle on their Allen wrench - it can easily be overtightened.

CPU A is toward the rear of the case and it is typically warmer than CPU B. This is normal because the very hot Northbridge is right there next to CPU A.

In contrast CPU B is in front of everything, getting the coolest air.

Hey guys,

I hope I'm not that wrong in this tread...
I recently got myself a 2013 MacPro with the 6-Core and D500, 1TB SSD and 32GB Ram..
So far I love that machine.. really fast, quiet and damn sexy on the desk. Way way faster than my MacBook Pro for photo editing.
Upgraded the RAM to 64GB already and now I am thinking about swapping the CPU. Not because the 6 Core is too slow.. no, I want to play and tinker a bit.
As far as I have read the 8 Core 2667v2 is one of the best options.. best Single Core Performance and a great multicore.. Is that still true?
I know a couple of benchmarks.. but am thinking.. is it noticeably faster than my 6 Core?

I don't know what CPU you have, but it appears that the single core turbo performance of the 8 and 6 core processors are all very close. I doubt you will see noticeable single core performance improvement.

Two more cores is going to faster, but only for certain specific kinds of workloads. I doubt it will noticeably help with photo editing in general. Furthermore, there are examples where more cores at the same speed has surprisingly proven to be slower.

To know for sure you could monitor your system resources while working, and if all cores are pegged, then two more cores will likely help. If not, then more cores probably won't help (and might even hurt).

Hi about these CPUs on Intel spec page, the cache 38.5 MB

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...n-w-3275m-processor-38-5m-cache-2-50-ghz.html
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...on-w-3275-processor-38-5m-cache-2-50-ghz.html

but in the apple website the 28cores CPU cache is 66.5MB
https://www.apple.com/au/mac-pro/specs/

if it is the same CPU, where is the extra cache come from?

Also if I install 3275 to the 2019 Mac Pro, not 3275M, which looks like only support different ram only.
but almost half price, is that means if I use less than 768gb RAM will have the same performance between 3275M and 3275?

Apparently, L3 vs L1 + L2 + L3

Doesn't look like you can yet right?

Very curious to see what other processors might be compatible with the 7,1 MP.
