They often broke from worn out without touching and the Northbridge can overheat.

I service them on every CPU Board I take apart. If they are not broken they might break.

It's not possible since Apple designed the multiplier circuit and firmware code to support up to 26x1333, the maximum possible multiplier with a MP5,1.

You can disassemble the EFI module yourself and check it, all CPU related PEI and EFI modules are inside 7A9354D9-0468-444A-81CE-0BF617D890DF, if I remember correctly, it's the CPUInitPei and CPUInitDxe.

On 4,1 hardware - running Windows, using Intel's Extreme overclocking utility, my 990x runs single core operations with a x31 multiplier for single core operations at 4.25Ghz. The utility allows me to adjust the multiplier based on the number of cores in use. While booting with a cpu that has a higher multiplier is blocked, changing the multipliers at runtime is clearly possible with the right software.

Ok, but changing the CPI multiplier on-the-fly on a multiplier unlocked i7 990x don't change the fact that you can't initialise a Xeon X5687/X5698, the EFI don't support it.

One of these days I'm going to pull the trigger on a 6 core 1660 v2. I currently have the 6 core 1650 but I want that high clock speed.

I doubt you'd notice much real world difference, but I do understand the temptation to get the fastest possible.

Hello everyone, first post here :)
I have a 2009 Mac Pro flashed to 5,1. I upgraded my single W3250 with a X5690 off of ebay. The issue that came up is this: on powering on it chimes, shows the apple logo loading screen, goes up about halfway the progress bar and then restarts. I already reseated CPU and RAM (running the original 6 GB 1066 ecc), reset the NVRAM (multiple times), tried recovery mode and booting from a Catalina installer, unsuccesfully. It doesn’t seem a hw problem to me, like overheating, bent pins or logic board fault; it shouldn't be a compatibility problem either, judging from what i read here. The machine worked perfectly before. I have not yet tried switching back CPU for a sanity check, I wanted to dig as deep as I could before blaming it on a faulty ebay processor (vendor has great reviews)
Am I missing something? Thank you all

isn't this the wrong ram and you should use 1333 mhz?

Tried with my rx560, then put the original HD4870 to see the loading screen, but the results are the same

btw catalina only runs with a special setting in nvram. i'd go anyways with mojave which is much more stable.
I'll try switching cpus, installing mojave and have another go with the x5690 then, in the next day or two. What about big sur? I wanted to upgrade after doing the cpu, might help doing the other way around.
Thank you, i'm open to other suggestions in the meantime

catalina and big sur on 5.1 is a pain in the ass but if you want you have to use open core. catalina works (without app-store) via
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="-no_compat_check"

as i said use mojave - is supported by apple on mp5.1 and runs fast and stable.

before changing the cpu try the mojave installer.

@sertrincia
do not try to run catalina until your machine works fine with mojave.
if it does and if you need catalina, you can follow the instructions on the open core thread in this forum.

I’m guessing you mean with the new cpu; mojave AND catalina always worked great anyway so I didn’t figure there would be any problem upgrading.
I’m quite busy these days, i’ll probably do the painful downgrade in a couple weeks and then report back ?? ty

Don't go anything above Mojave until everything works.

Otherwise it can be very hard for you to diagnosis if anything goes wrong.

pleased to report that 64GB of RAM works in a MacPro1,1 without having to flash its firmware to MacPro2,1 firmware

this is something I have been wanting to test for a few years since it was discovered 64GB works with the 2,1 firmware, as I dont actually recall anyone actually tested the 8GB 2Rx4 sticks on a stock MacPro1,1 but for some reason it says in the Wiki on the first post/page that you need the MP2,1 firmware

a friend of mine did test 64GB of RAM in a MacPro1,1 for me a couple years ago when buying the RAM for his MacPro2,1s but he was not able to do in depth testing

but I finally got/found 8 2Rx4 8GB FB-DIMMs for cheap and I am pleased to report they do indeed work in a stock MacPro1,1 :)

curiously older OS X versions like snow leopard will show 64GB in about this mac but only have 32GB usable (have to wonder if its a limit of the 32bit kernel mode SL runs in when running on a MP1,1), OS X El Cap has no problem using all 64GB as demonstrated above

and windows 10 64bit also saw all the RAM http://valid.x86.fr/229gxw

I also own an Xserve1,1 and I hope to test the 64GB of RAM in that machine as well :)

Well, i found some time and came back to Mojave today. Nothing changed though, it has the same behaviour - actually, this time around it shows the "Your mac restarted because of a problem..." screen everytime it reboots
