I'm also doing all of my rendering primarily with bootcamp running windows.
It's always about 10-20% faster on the exact same hardware.
I'm not a mac person at all, to be honest. In our company our entire render backend is linux and we have our artists running windows 7. The rest of the company is on iMacs for the production side of things.
So I wasn't really sure that I'd give these machines a second thought.
Then I used it and really enjoyed it. I'm also very happy with the form factor as an easy way to transport these things to sets, etc.
Sure..they're not the fastest compared to full tower machines. However, the space savings and the fact that I can get tower speeds from a machine that I can put into a backpack is phenomenal.

Yeh totally agree, this particular situation that i just realized maybe i should be able to load **** ton and just not bother with conversions, it's convenient you have to agree
Decimated it already yes, but when it happened i was thinking if i was on 10 core pc with quadro i would've not even had a problem.
But yes it is borderline retarded to do previs with 40 mil in viewport, but hey client wanted all details ....
I should put you in touch with my buddy Neville. He's gotten this quick concept system figured out and is making top tier work.
Neville seems to be a big fan of Modo on osx and he's using a macbook pro to pop off his 40+ million face geo from Zbrush. It really seems like the best bet is (if you're a Zbrush user) rebuild the base geo from your high res, reproject the details, gen out a Mutli Tile UV map with a series of 8k displaces, attach and go.
You'll get faster renders and pixel matched output that will spin, animate, sing and, dance in your viewport.
But again, this is only a method that I'm used to using. Everyone has their own way.
