Two crashes today and still nothing in the console annoyingly. I can SSH in and check the logs but I just get unrelated messages about MirrorDisplays, I presume that's because WindowServer has died? I thought it was Chrome originally but even without using it, it still crashes. I guess I'll book a genius appointment :(

Tried reinstalling High Sierra - no change. Still get freezes.

Tried the original RAM (I'd fitted 48GB SK Hynix) - no change. Still get freezes.

Genius appointment booked to see if they can solve it. Fingers crossed I'm lucky and eventually get a 6 core with D500! I'll mention that others have got that as a resolution for the same issue.

Thing that might help you:

- Having apple care
- Video and photo's of the freezes / crashes
- Numerous calls, chats to apple care support (They keep the history of your cases and the more problems reported the better.)
- A lot of patience

Good luck (not that luck should be an issue here but i'm afraid it helps)

Thanks. I'll get on the phone to them as well then. I have a couple of videos and photos already as I saw in the thread that helped.

I still have the first year of the "default" Apple Care. Do you mean the extended 3 year Apple Care? It's $299 here which will probably be useful I suppose.

The extra paid apple care does give you a better chance.
And given the price of the mac pro and the issues in this thread, i think it's not to much to have ease of mind.

Took it in just now. Asked about a replacement instead of repair and they were predictably cagey about that. I'd bought it overseas which apparently "complicated things" even though the AppleCare documentation makes no mention of that, only that they can either a) repair or b) replace. I'd ideally like b) based on the feedback I've seen on this thread about attempted repairs of the D300 cards. The machine was a month old when I took it in (issue started in the first week but I was overseas) so according to their policy I should have been able to get a replacement. Anyhow, they're going to replace 1 or both of the cards and then inevitably I'll still have the issue and will kick up a fuss. I guess this is the "have patience" tip in action.

Even after trying to get it replaced rather than repaired. I now have my Mac Pro back and it's been repaired. They've replaced both graphics cards so lets see if that fixes it. I don't have a lot of faith based on the comments in this thread.

To be perfectly honest I'd be happy if this repaired machine works fine now. It's just less than ideal as it's not really *new* anymore. AppleCare definitely seems worth it. If this machine goes wrong again I'll kick up a fuss and ask for a new one.

I've had this same issue and have dealt with chat, phone, and genius bar support. None of them knew anything about this issue and all tried the same old line of "reset the SMC", despite seeing a trail of support history. I've only had it about a month, and the problems began on day 1. The best I've gotten so far is that when I took it to one Apple store, they sent it off for about a week and it came back with one new graphics card (card B, I believe). It froze the next day. It has been freezing less since then, but the temperature here has been a little cooler, and I could see heat being a contributing factor, though it could just be that one card replaced means 50% fewer crashes. I did educate both geniuses that I visited about this known issue, and the known fix, to which they replied that all they can do is elevate it to be sent off and I get what I get. So I will be taking it in for another try in a few weeks to see if they can fix it.

ps I was able to get into the "graceful shutdown" mode mentioned earlier in this thread by some odd combo of unplugging/replugging the hdmi cable, pressing the power button (but not holding for hard shutdown), and then pressing it again to wake it. As mentioned before, the graphics come back to life but things are slower and it's clear that you have to do a reboot. I don't know if this is related, but shutdown takes a bit longer with this computer than my old mac (any shutdown, not just after freezing).

Well it seems I've had no freezes since the GPU replacements. I did however have some weird issue with the SSD, apps would stop responding, I'd force quit and they'd never re-open. Reboots didn't help so I ran disk utility in recovery mode which failed with an "fsroot tree is invalid" error. Had to reformat and re-install *again* but it's been all good since. I think it might also have been something SMB related as I've seen a lot of complaints about High Sierra and SMB.

To those with D300 and screen freezes: How do you have your display connected (HDMI, mDP/DisplayPort, Thunderbolt...) and what resolution are you running?

This weekend I bought a late 2013 nMP (actual build date mid 2015) quad core base model for music production and video editing. Desperately needed a backup/upgrade from my 2008 due to pending projects.

Had a great start! During initial installation (at keychain setup question) spinning wheel appeared. Nothing I could do. Hard reset. One time since, the machine has displayed the signature as described in this thread - mouse pointer available, desktop not responding. IF this IS the gpu issue as described here, and I think it's too soon to say and logs didn't show the usual warnings.. the fact it occurred during initial setup seems like an ominous sign leaning toward hardware. Seems unlikely a common scenario like install from default, would provoke a software error. Yosemite was the installer btw.

Absolutely gutted. I'm in love with the machine and had to jump through some hoops to position the funds (it was a relative bargain too). Now I'm wondering if this is just a glitch, or going to escalate into an increasing problem...

So here's the thing. I want it! I don't want to return it to the retailer they cannot replace it. I have warranty and presumably Apple Care for 12 months.

Couple of basic queries...

1/ Does this issue tend to worsen over time?
2/ Can Apple Care be extended at any time whilst you have existing Apple Care?
3/ Has ANYBODY got a clue what the cause is? I can't find any evidence of anything but speculation.

I've setup SSH so I can reboot remotely and will be monitoring this machine closely.

[edit : upgraded to High Sierra immediately]

What GPUs you got? Ram? SSD?
I think it was a better idea to stay with Sierra at the present time.

Hi.. the base model, so D300 x 2, 12GB RAM, 256Gb SSD.

Since posting I've worked out you can extend Applecare within the initial twelve month cover.

I can totally understand not wanting to get rid of it, it's a great machine when it works.

1/ The issue is very irregular, so no way to tell. I've had mine for nearly 3 years and it didn't get worse over time, nor did it get any better.

2/ Apple care extends the original 12 month warranty to 36 months. It can't be extended beyond that. You can buy apple care during those first 12 months of ownership from new.

3/ We don't have a clue, i doubt Apple has a clue. Most repairs include replacing the gpu boards and the glitch looks gpu related so odds are those gpu's are the cause.

Maybe what you had was just an installation issue. Just use your mac as intended and watch it closely. Do not hesitate to call apple when you get an issue. The more you bother them, the better your changes are for getting a repair.

Two sets of D300s and still with issues.

My junk freezes often- once or twice a day.

Now, I have updated my OS to 10.13.3 (the latest). So far I have not seen my trash bin freeze yet. What are people seeing? I'm probably just fooling myself...

I never got the video cards replaced. I've been using this piece of garbage as a stool to sit on. Maybe I can actually make good use of it soon... I will run GeekBench, screensaver, etc to see if I can get it to croak soon.

Keep me posted on what's going on with your trash bin.
