I have been using Crucial for memory expansion since 1998 or so. I have never had a single problem with their memory.

They have a lifetime warranty, and free 2-day shipping, and one of the easiest websites to use to find for some of the most obscure computers out there.

I will give them a look. Thanks for the info. I really do not know that much about computers, that is why i love these forums. YOu guys really have helped me out. Thanks

Ordered today, est ship Sept 29, est delivery date Oct 6
2.66, BT & X1900, otherwise stock. Also ordered 30"ACD which I sould have by Sept 11. This will be my first MAC and is the most excited I've been about a new computer in a long time. I've been reading "Tiger The Missing Manual" and its been fueling the fire. Funny thing is, from what I've seen so far, I'm not sure I'll ever get around to installing Windows

Woot. Ordered a MP this morning, it shipped this afternoon. -Stock config all the way. It will get here the day after labor day. Color me excited. :D

Only sad part is that I waited far too long to send in my Final Cut Studio discs to crossgrade and I'll have this machine for a couple days before I can do much work on it. That and I won't have the ATI x1900 for a few months whilst I generate some more funds and develop some sort of work-related excuse to spend the extra money. Maybe I'll start doing some more motion graphics work w/ Motion (now that I can even begin to) and will simply need the better card... for business purposes only of course.

BTW: I ended up not going w/ MacMall, but found that somone I knew worked at our local Apple Store. When I saw him there my eyes lit up with 15% off signs. It was a good day.

Mac Mall

For what it's worth, I have a new sales rep. for PC Mall at my work, and we chit-chat quite a bit about misc. things whenever she calls. I think she's a newer salesperson there, and doesn't have enough clients yet to tie up all of her time on the phone. So she gets bored and likes talking more than just long enough to make a sale. But anyway, I mentiioned to her that I was about to buy a Mac Pro. Although she wasn't real familiar with the "Mac Mall" side of their business, she looked it up and told me that if I purchased a standard configuration Mac Pro from her, she'd sell it to me at her employee cost - which was supposedly about $50 below Apple's educational discounted price for the same machine!

I didn't end up doing it, since I wanted a custom order system and didn't quite trust her to order it correctly anyway with customizations. But this *might* be an interesting avenue for someone to pursue if they do business regularly with "PC Mall"?

That's good to know. Do you think her quote was with or without the rebate?

Burn-in....

At the risk of sending us off-topic (but in the interest of helping out anyone else who might be interested, all at one time) -- the 72 hour "burn in" procedure has historically been recommended for pretty much all new computer systems. The thing is, traditionally, computer dealers or manufacturers did this procedure before the machine ever got into your hands as a customer/user - so you didn't have to be concerned with it.

It's not that it will make anything "run better". Your CPU goes at the rated speed, period. Same with the hard drive, video, and everything else in a system. Rather, it's just a way to flush out defective components. With most electronic parts, there are a certain percentage that are manufactured improperly. Some of these will fail immediately, and others will only fail after they're functional for a little while at normal operating temperatures. The rule of thumb has been, if it lasts 72 hours in constant use, it's most likely a "good" component that will work for the rest of its rated service life.

Nowdays, I don't think many companies really do the burn-in of new computers like they once did - because it takes up a lot of physical space and slows down orders. Instead, they just focus on trying to achieve better quality control at the assembly line level. So basically, they get by with skipping the burn-in step. But doing it as a user will ensure you don't have a bad component interrupt some important work you start doing with your new computer.

Purchased mine 24 Aug estimated ship 21 Sep with ATI and Airport/BT. My dual 30" monitors are slated to arrive on Monday. I sure hope everyone is right and the computer ships sooner than later ... otherwise I'll go insane staring at those two monitors with no Mac Pro to run them :D

Can someone explain this to me more? (feel free to PM so as to keep this on-topic) I have heard both sides of the debate of burning in headphones ... but never of burning in a computer. Is this really beneficial?

Chris

Rebate?

Truthfully, I'm not sure. I wondered about that myself after I hung up with her. She didn't mention a rebate to me, but her final price sure sounded like it must have included that.

And it will also waste plenty of electricity, and, for people who rely on their computer to make a living (photographers and the like), delaying using your super-fast new Mac Pro may even cost you money.

IMHO, there is no need to burn in. If there was either Apple would do it at the factory or they would recommend it in the user manual. Neither of those are the case.

Umm, why would you not use your computer while burning it in? Simply turning on the computer is not going to burn anything in. ie the hard drive will spin down, the processor(s) will step down, etc. The system needs to be doing stuff to be effectively burned in.

Well, mine's still showing as delayed by two weeks from the original shipping date, so that's a big no from me! :(

That should be grounds for free overnight shipping... Or something. I'm glad I ordered the stock config. I need it for my business and when I tried the machine at our local Apple store I was not at all disappointed in Motion performance w/ the 7300.

By the way, I don't know if anyone else has had this, but to me it's one of the most annoying things... Your fancy computer ships and travels the distance to your city in only 2 days. But then sits on a truck in a parking lot over the weekend because Ground is closed Saturday. ....*sniffle* it could be under my desk....

This is perhaps one of the most annoying things I've ever experienced. *Sigh*

OK, so it could be worse... But it's so close, yet so far. It's the first time I remember begrudging a holiday weekend.

Eww. I forgot about Labor Day Monday. I feel for you, I really do. Where are you located? Perhaps we can get together and have a "where is my mac" drink. :)

I'm in Grand Rapids, MI. That'd sure be nice if we could though. There's nothing like commiserating over geeky merchandise just out of reach... I think I'll have like 7. ;)

Just FYI for all!

I was checking my email thoughout the day, and I got no email from apple. So tonight I decided to check my order status online and to my surprise there was "action required" on my account. My credit card had to verify that the purchase was legit. They never emailed me, So if I would not have checked who knows how long it would take for me to notice. Just thought everyone would like you to know.

Well they've changed my ship date out to Sept. 20th from the 7th. This is so annoying, yet another two weeks of waiting?!

That is *exactly* what happened to me yesterday. Did you happen to pay with American Express? Shows that it is always a good idea to check your order status online ... you never know

I think Apple got sick of people checking their orders. LOL I get this now:
