Anyone use MacConnection or MacMall to buy their MacPros? They're offering a $150 rebate and no tax or shipping. - Mac Pro That's a savings of like $300 altogether. That to me says it's worth it to buy now and upgrade to the X1900 later. I'll have to buy today or tomorrow, though. The rebate expires after tomorrow. I trust these are good stores to buy from?

Yeah, I have used MacMall before. Good choice, especially with the rebate and no tax. But from what I know you can not BTO.

That's fine. Mac Mall has plenty of options and even offers to pre-install windows XP... That's a nice option. Won't find that at Apple's site. I'll probably customize it all myself after I get it. Thanks for the input.

BTW, for those who know more about Windows than me, What's the diff b/w Pro and Home user?

You can BTO to an extent, you can add in the X1900 or the 4500, but you'll pay a higher price (only place I've seen that matches Apples price is Expercom). You can add more RAM in, but not with the same options Apple has (the 2GB option is 2 1GB DIMMs, not 4 512's I believe). Add to that everything but the MacPros it seems is backordered. They're right down the street from me so I wanted to get it there, but their price with less stuff was more expensive than Apple.

No they won't. I'm not talking about SLI/Crossfire. I know exactly what i'm talking about. I had 2 ATI video cards working independently in my G4 tower. You cannot put an ATI and a Nvidia card in the same computer, and have them run at the same time.

And what is your proof? Back on the G4 towers, there was only one AGP slot, and no nVidia PCI cards were available with Mac ROMs. Unless you have evidence to support that in a PCIe environment, running OS X, that the drivers conflict, I don't buy this.

Just be warned that MacMall has made me fight them regarding rebates on three occasions they won one the other 2 took about 6 months & about 8-10 hours on the phone.

Wow. That is lame. Any words of wisdom in dealing with them? What was the reason you lost one rebate? Do you think MacConnection is any better?

I was wrong about that. I was misinformed. Sorry.

The only words of wisdom that I can offer is to consider there rebates as a possible surprise in the future but don't count on them or use them to make a decision between vendors.

They just seem to fight and fight. The one rebate I did loose out on was a $229 rebate for a upgrade 1GB stick or ram for the MBP Rev A. 2.0GHz machine (they had this rebate the day the MBP's where announced and everything went haywire with Apple upgrading processors and model numbers) so I only got a $49 rebate but only after months & months.

Edit - Also reading the rebate forms should be helpful but they seem to contradict themselves

No problem. :p In the future just be sure your information is correct before sharing it. Or qualify it with a "I have reason to believe..." or "I heard that..." Even on sites dedicated to rumors, no one likes the propagation of misinformation.

I was also in an Apple store today where some knowledgeable folk confirmed that both cards would work in the same system. –See what I did here? I let you know where I got my information and allow you to judge for yourself how trustworthy the source is. You’ll get the hang of it… ;)

All the best, macgeek.

Awesome! That is pretty exciting to know it is making it's way to you right now. Here's hoping mine follows the lead of shipping early and ships yet this week instead of next Thursday like it claims right now

Mac Pro RAm Question

Hello Everyone,

I am thinking of upgrading my RAM to 4 or 8 GB (in addition to the 1 GB stock) I am looking at OWC and Datamem. The people from OWC warned me not to go with anyone elses RAM other than themselves and Apple. Datamem's RAM Prices are significatly lower which makes me want to buy 8GB. So my question to you awesome folks is: Would you buy 4 GB of Apple RAM (4x1gb), 4 GB of OWC RAM (2x2gb) or 8 GB (4x2gb) of Ram if you were me? I am running a video production company with final cut and shake.
I guess my main overal concern is datamem bad? Or should I play it safe and stick with owc or Apple. Thanks

I am currently using Datamem memory in my Powerbook G4 and have had no problems at all with it. I just bought 4GB of RAM from them for my Mac Pro.

You left Crucial.com off the list. Their prices are even cheaper (if you're looking at the 512mb sticks) than Datamem and they have the heat sinks that seem to be missing (from the picture at least) on the Datamem ram. And the Crucial prices have just come back down from $220 that they were before -for the 2x512 setup.

I know you want to load up now, but I would wait if I were you (if you can, otherwise do what you need to). I'll be going with a 1gb kit from Crucial for now to stay afloat. Then when the prices come down I'll load it up. By the way, in looking at Datamem's prices, it bugs me that there's no price breaks for quantity orders. Seems that if you order two of one stick they should offer a slight discount. And where are the heatsinks?

I heard bad things about Crucial, I am not nessarily looking for cheapest but I would like to maximize my investment. But for $1600 for 8gb of ram... it is tempting, thanks

Mac Pro Shipped

Hey Guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster. My MP (2.66, 1GB RAM, 160 GB HD, Airport/BT) was ordered Aug. 21 with an estimated ship by date of Sept. 12 and arrival by Sept. 19. It was received by Fed Ex in Anaheim, CA last night at 11:02pm, and it should arrive in Seattle tomorrow (Sept. 1) via standard shipping.

I haven't had a new computer since my 12" PB three years ago, so I'm really excited. Too bad I'm out of town this weekend, so I won't get to play with it much until next week.

I have been using Crucial for memory expansion since 1998 or so. I have never had a single problem with their memory.

They have a lifetime warranty, and free 2-day shipping, and one of the easiest websites to use to find for some of the most obscure computers out there.

Nice work, Strieck. I just ordered mine today. Standard config. all the way. I've got 2x320 Seagate Barracudas on the way as well. Crucial Ram is up for order next. I too have been living with a 1.25Ghz Powerbook G4 for the past 3 years. Even when it was new it wasn't the fastest computer available (the G5 was out in force then). It will be nice to have something that will be very fast for a good number of years (lets hope 4-5). ;) I hope it ships today yet. :D

Lakefx, you're the first person to say something bad about Crucial that I've heard. I havne't used them before either (I have Kingston in my PB), but all my tech friends and ppl on these forums seem to trust them. I would be more concerned about getting the Apple-recommended heatsinks (even though they only mention it in terms of more or less fan noise). If you're concerned about making the most reliable investment, I would go with OWC and get 6x1GB sticks (totalling 7GB in the MP). I can't think of a reason you'd need more than 7GB, but maybe you know something I don't. OWC seems to have done the most testing and know their stuff pretty well, so if safe is how you play it, go with them.

Sorry, I missed that detail. I went with the stock 7300GT. I'll mostly be working with final cut, so I think I'll be okay for now. I've never had a machine that's so upgradeable. It's nice to know that I can add on if I need to.

Congratulations! And that does suck about being out of town when you get it. That happened when I bought my Quicksilver tower ... had to have a friend sign for it and bring it in the house while I was away for a week ... that was pure torture ;)

My Powerbook 1.25 G4 has served me well these last 2 to 3 years. But I too am ready for something a bit more powerful. My x1900 mac pro won't ship till the 12th, but I'm really looking forward to crunching data, running aperture and final cut, and playing a game or two.

I'm sure the jump from one 1.25 GHz G4 to FOUR 2.66GHz Xeons will be pretty incredible. I can't wait.
