I do have a buddy that lives across town, but I don't think they will ship to an address that doesn't match my credit card.

they will. when you order from apple you can fill in the billing address for your credit card and a shipping address. they don't need to match.

Works fine too, I bought an eMac for the inlaws a few years ago and did just that.

The exact same thing happened when I received my monitors. However, I looked over the package and nothing was wrong. I saw their new label they stuck on there along with the old label ... don't know why the bar code was unreadable ... looked perfectly in tact to me.

I wouldn't be.

FedEx tracking can be useless many times. They've always been goofy for me.

Mine arrived in charlotte, NC today, but has yet to leave CA.

Just received mine a couple of hours ago. :) Box has a couple of little dings on the top, but nothing the styrofoam didn't take. Case has a little scuff mark but nothing major.

Few notes...

This system is SILENT, very very quiet. Only noise I can hear is a faint, FAINT whoosh of the fans and the hard drive. Well okay and the birds outside....

I ordered 2 GB of RAM and thought they'd just stick all four DIMMs on one riser. They were nice enough to set it up for quad channel though, 2 DIMMs on each riser. :)

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but I plugged in the power cord first, then was going to plug in my monitor, keyboard etc. Once the plug went into the power strip, the system popped on. So I had to shut down to connect the monitor. Did everyone elses do that?

The X1900 card is a beast, but gives you great game performance. I ran a quick run through of the first level of Quake 4 and was feeling the back areas for the amount of heat. The air coming off the Xeons and RAM wasn't any warmer, hardly any warmth at all actually. MUCH better than my G5 which had hot air coming out continuously. The Radeon had a good amount of heat coming out, I'd say about the same or a tiny bit more than the hot air that comes out of my 1.66 Core Duo Mini.

How loud is the X1900 XT for you? I read on Tom's Hardware that it was one of the loudest high end cards out there and that quieter fans are one of the main advantages of the X1950.

Received mine some hours ago. I transfered my matters from the MBP in an impressive 1,5h. (ab 60Gb of datas). Video encoding it is basically 250% faster than my MBP 2,16. I got the basic 1Gb of RAM from Apple and I added 2Gb more from OWC. I have 3 500Gb Hds and everything it's working fine.
The absolut silent of the MP it's impressive. I was used to my G5 dual 2,0 that was really very noisy with all funs permanently working. My MBP 15" it makes more fun noise than the MP!! I had no time to try some games to see the power of the X1900, these I will leave for after...... :)

Honestly, not very. I just played through first part of the Pointe Du Hoc mission in Call of Duty 2 and the fans pumping out a lot of hot air. But the sound isn't even very noticeable, very amazing. I'll run Quake 4 through it's paces later again and report back on the fan noise with that, but even when I did a quick test run earlier, it was very quiet.

OK I apologize. i just haven't seen anything that accomplishes what I am doing directly. I've tried exporting through QuickTime directly and it looks horrilbe. I've tried other programs - none seem to do a decent job for me. I'm just trying to archive HDTV recordings. Nothing fancy.

No worries, man, we're good. I think we will be doing some similar workflow things, which is why I asked.

Once I get my box, monitor, memory, RAID setup, etc, I will do some workflow analysis to better address your and my concerns.

Of course, the whole setup including FCP studio, CS2 and After Effects will run about 12 grand, so it will take a few months before I have all the parts in place, but I'm in no rush. I want to do this right and a few months to wait...now THAT is crushing...LOL (j/k).

With Apple's latest announcement of 640x480 movie downloads via iTunes, I wonder if improvements have been made to the H.264 encoder in QT. I'll have to check it out.

If FedEx tracking is still showing it in CA how do you know its in Charlotte. Reason I ask is mine shipped on the 11th but FedEx tracking still shows it in CA. Also I'm just south of Charlotte, so if your box is in town mine might be too.

I have a quick question that is sort of on topic. I was getting ready to order my Macpro but then realized that I won't be home to receive it. I stopped by the Apple store to see if they would let me drop ship it there, but they told me "no way." Between school and work, I'm rarely home during the day and Fedex won't tell me what time they deliver, or I would just find a window of time to recieve it. I'm planning to order the Macpro 2.6 and a 23" ACD... I can't bear the thought of my order being left on my doorstep. I do have a buddy that lives across town, but I don't think they will ship to an address that doesn't match my credit card. I wonder if I can pick it up at Fedex (if it all will fit in my car)?

Anyone have any ideas, other than taking the day off to wait for delivery... or having it all shipped to YOUR house? :D

Yes, you can explicitly have it sent to a FedEx facility for pickup. I did that back when Mac clones were happening. I plead the fifth as to why I did it, but the extended hours of the depots make that a convenient feature for a number of situations. As in, some people just don't live in the best areas and don't want their neighbors to even SEE a delivery.

That way, when you get home, you can tell your nosy neighbors that you are just supplementing your collection of garden gnomes from eBay. That will justify the big box.

I only go into this detail because I realized that even though I live in a pretty crime-free area, I will have to add an insurance rider to my renter's insurance. So, having neighbors and passer's by not see a delivery of semi-portable stuff that costs several thousands of dollars is a good thing.

I'd call the local FedEx office for shipping details. Also, you CAN send stuff to an address that's not your billing address. That's why they have two fields. One for billing and one for shipping. They do that for people sending gifts as well as those that prefer to have shipments delivered to their work address. It's all pretty easy, actually. As for picking up at FedEx, just verify that your location can hold it for you and get their shipping details.

That should do it. Hope that helps!

This is what it says:

Sep 12, 2006 7:42 PM
Departed FedEx location
CHARLOTTE, NC

12:51 PM
Arrived at FedEx location
CHARLOTTE, NC

Sep 7, 2006 11:00 PM
Arrived at FedEx location
ANAHEIM, CA

8:11 PM
Picked up
ANAHEIM, CA

5:29 PM
Package data transmitted to FedEx
FULLERTON, CA

You can see it showed up in Charlotte without ever leaving Anaheim which it arrived at 11:00PM on the 7th.

Hope it's on truck for delivery like they say it will be tomorrow. I'm gonna photo shoot the sucker, find a video benchmark and stick a DB meter behind it for the sound pressure level of the ATI 1900

It's a PC card. Read a PC review. As Bf2 is only available for windows. Other tests here made on a Mac Pro shows the same 3D Benchmark numbers as on a normal PC. So read them !!!!

Nope, I'm not being lazy. CPU speed certainly plays an important role in game speed, and I'd like to know how well a Mac Pro with an X1900 card will stack up against my slower PC with two 7800GT video cards in it. I have a feeling the dual 7800GT cards will win, but it's hard to tell.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I hadn't thought about how having my equipment delivered to my place would be a bad thing. I live in an apartment complex and having my neighbors see the Fedex truck drop off a bunch of boxes wouldn't be cool. I think being low-key is best when it comes to nosy neighbors.

I'll probably just have the equipment shipped to my friends house. He runs a home office and is usually home. If I buy him a Starbucks he'll probably drop off the equipment when I get home in the evening. What are friends for, but to receive your Apple stuff? :D

I know you're probably excited but type a little slower man. :D ;) Sounds like Apple sent you an email a bit after they actually shipped it. Guess you got the overnight shipping?

My package left Sacramento at 10:22 PM and if things go like they usually do with FedEx it will probably be "out for delivery" at around 6 AM and the guy will show up at like 3 or 4 PM. :p Will I be able to sleep?
