So yeah, do they sell build to order macs at the retail stores?
I called two Apple retail stores and was told by both, "no." The only Mac Pro's they sell are the stock config. If you want to buy additional memory, video card, etc, they can install for you, but you're essentially paying twice.

BTO is online store only.

Here's a couple of reader reports at xlr8yourmac.com about the X2:

Seems pretty good, even the temps are being kept in check.

I fitted one last night to my Mac Pro 3Ghz as playing WOW caused the stock X1900 fans to get fairly loud after about an hour of so of play. Installation was easy and the machine is now silent. best £15 I have spent in a long time.

hm, strange - i ordered mine on 14th. why does it take so long??
There are certainly complaints from 3rd party resellers that Apple prioritizes its own orders. I guess your experience reinforces that complaint.

Depends upon how you've configured it, for one thing, and also your location....

Maybe because you're in Europe and you've ordered through a small distributor that makes the difference. I am in the US and ordered directly from Apple's online store while standing in a physical brick-and-mortar Apple store within a local shopping mall.

Holy Moly  with 8gb of ram I'm not surprised!!!

Is that 4 x 2gb's (for quad channel goodness) ?
