Apple released today the Mac Studio wich sits in the line above the Mac mini and just under the Mac Pro. But at the time of writing this it is the most powerful Mac Apple has to offer.

Let's wait for the delivery of our precious and fast new machines together.
Which one did you get? Did you also order the Studio Display?

I'll start:

I ordered the M1 Ultra 20-core CPU, 48-core GPU and cancelled it immediately again. ? Then I went for the M1 Max 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU. I also ordered the Studio Display with Vesa mount, the black Magic Mouse and the white Magic Keyboard without the number pad.
It is said to arrive on March 21st.

I ordered the 10 core 32 core gpu 32gb ram 4gb ssd. Upgrade for my m1 mac mini with 16gb ram 1tb ssd.

I think the 10cpu and gpu with 32 core is at a good price performance point.

20-48, 64GB, 2TB. April 20. No Studio Display since I need multiple inputs to switch my monitors between Mac and PC and the Studio is single input. If someone ever makes a third party switchbox compatible with the Studio Display, I'd pick up two of them.

Edit: cancelled and reordered with more storage

Looks like I'll get the computer before the screen...

This is my dream computer. I have no need for an M1 Ultra (or M1 Max if I'm honest), but I ordered the below plus two 8TB Samsung SSDs and an OWC Thunderbay for my storage end-game.

I ordered from the Apple Store (web, Japan) at 4AM local time, right when the store went live.
  • Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
  • 64GB unified memory
  • 1TB SSD storage
This config had a delivery date of 24 March right from the start. Anything other than the M1 Max (either type) + 32GB RAM config wasn't available for delivery on the 18th. A few hours later, shipping times had gone from the 24th to 3-4 weeks.

Anyone order the M1 ultra with 64 core graphics and get a March or April ship date?

I'm set for a monitor (Eizo CS2740), but looking to replace my 2018 Mac mini and Asus RX Vega 56 external graphics card. I'm settled on:

M1 Max with 32-core GPU; and
1TB storage.

Still undecided about 32GB vs 64GB of memory :)

Yes, I ordered:
  • Apple M1 Ultra with 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine
  • 128GB unified memory
  • 8TB SSD storage
My order was placed minutes after the store opened, and it's showing a delivery date of March 18-22. We shall see....

Did anyone notice if you pick the entry level Mac Studio and upgrade it to the top of the line Ultra, you get faster estimated ship times than picking the higher end Mac and upgrading to the top of the line ultra? I'm curious if that would play out or if it's just an error in their system.

Funny, I just noticed that as well as I was trying to figure out what the differences between the two were--its kind of odd they have two products to start with when they could have listed one with the different upgrade steps, but my guess is they plan on most people ordering the two different "base" configurations?

Seemingly only difference is front 2 ports, it's usb-c vs thunderbolt 4 on the front. I think the chipsets are likely more costly to support another pair of TB4 ports.

You would think, but that's not the case--the front ports are TB4 if you upgrade to the Ultra. You can confirm by configuring one and adding it to your bag and then reviewing the config.

I’d originally placed a 20/64-core, 128GB, 2TB starting from the $4K base configuration and my delivery dates were in mid-May. Sure enough, picking the $2K base spec and upgrading it to the configuration I wanted showed a delivery date of late March-early April. So I canceled my initial order (I needed to change my payment method anyway), and bought the same M1U configuration but this time I built my configuration starting from the $2K base model. Everything looked like I’d actually get the earlier delivery window until I completed checkout and received my delivery dates - back to mid-May.

TL;DR version - If you build a higher-end spec starting from the base configuration thinking you might get your computer earlier, you won’t - the delivery dates will correct themselves once you proceed through checkout.

I ordered a couple of hours after the Store went back online.

If you have a 4K TV set, you can use it temporarily.
Ah yes, you're right. Phew! 😉

If you do "only" photography is should be sufficient. I got the M1 Max 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU with 64 GB RAM because I also work with Final Cut Pro and sometimes even with Lightroom and Final Cut Pro simultaneously and I noticed on my 2017 iMac 5K I used around 50 GB of RAM+Swap. Also both CPU and GPU load were on the limit depending in wich application I was working. I suppose I will get at the limit of the M1 Max too but the price jump for the M1 Ultra is simply too much for me since I'm not a professional photo- or videographer.

PS: As a little appetiser my black Magic Mouse and my white small Magic Keyboard should arrive tomorrow. 🙂
