Do you guys think the Max was start at the same config it starts out now (36gb memory (since they dont do 32anymore) with 512gb)?

The m4 max mbp start with 36gb ram and 1tb storage…so wondering if theyre gonna stick with same m4 max config and have it also start at 1tb instead of 512..
That seems likely to me. The M2 Max in the MacBook Pro was available with 512 GB storage, but the M4 Max is not. So it’s reasonable to believe they’ll do the same for the M4 Max in the Mac Studio.

I just check web archives and the M2 Max was not starting at 512gb, it was starting at 1tb like it does now...leading me to belive its probably still going to start at 512gb on the Studio Max

Sorry, my mistake 😞 here’s the spec sheet — I think they used 512 GB in the M2 Max Studio to bring the entry-level price down as far as they could. You are right that they will probably do that again.

Considering the M5 will be less drastic jump in performance from M4, is it possible they might skip M5 Mac Studio? And in that case, how likely are we to see Wifi 7 in the M4 Mac Studios?

I think that having five Thunderbolt five ports would be amazing and might enable clustering Studios together like some are doing with M4 Minis to handle larger workloads.

Until we see the next Ultra, we don’t know. It’s difficult to speculate about cadence without knowing what Apple has done in that respect.

The M1-M2 Ultra was a first step, and it’s probable M4-M5 Ultra will be a second step. UltraFusion 2.0, as it were.

I’m confident there will be an M4 Max Mac Studio. It’s a good bet. But the Ultra Mac Studio and the Ultra Mac Pro are unknowns. They could go straight to M5. Nobody knows.

As I see it, the Mac Studio is a bridge product, between the world of the Max and the world of the Ultra. Someone else here said this first, but the Mac Studio is the replacement for both the 5K iMac (= Max Studio) and the iMac Pro (= Ultra Studio).

Wi-Fi 7 seems very unlikely in anything M4-based. But for M5? Sure, seems likely.

Current Wifi7 in iPhones is a bit flawed because it can't use 320Mhz, so not the real deal but as no M4 has W7 i'm afraid not gonna happen in a Studio.

Yet anxious to see when the Studio is going to be released, they could have implemented that M4 Max for ages in that simple Studio body and sales will be disappointing the longer they wait because people will still go for a Pro M5 Max laptop (but I guess that is what they want).

Yep, I don’t get it either. I’m hopeful that some obvious reason will emerge, like releasing the M4 Max Studio in October 2024 alongside the new Mini wasn’t possible because of assembly logistics — like they’re putting it together in the US, and the timetable for that didn’t allow for it, for whatever reason(s).

Yeah I get they don't want to undermine the new Mini sales, but c'mon give us the M4 Max in March. Only dream would be a M5 Max & Ultra in June but yeah 0,01% chance.

I was hoping for June but the fact that there are no leaks at all about the Ultra chip has me doubting it now. It's not like AMD, Qualcomm and Intel are putting up stiff competition, either.

Yeah that is the problem, no competition they will take it slow... There are some rumors about the Hydra chip, but Ultra only. Would just love a Max with a Ultra GPU, it will come some day but not this year.

Gurman’s presentation of the original Donan/Brava/Hidra leak included the following: "For the Mac Studio, Apple is testing versions with both a still-unreleased M3-era chip and a variation of the M4 Brava processor." I read that as news of an experimental variant of the M3 Max, with the Brava "variation" being an M4 version of that. So there’s a chance there will be a special edition of the M4 Max for the Mac Studio, different from the version used in the MacBook Pro.

Yes a good topic where they discuss this stuff is here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/m4-chip-generation-speculation-megathread-merged.2393843/

[Heh-heh — I lifted the original Gurman quote from one of my old posts in that thread!]

I don’t really see that (a desktop variant of the M4 Max) as likely, but I don’t know. Note that Gurman seems to have backed away from it. Now (as of January 12), he just states the obvious: “… So Apple needs to get the higher-end Studio model back on track with the speedier M4 Max and M4 Ultra chips.”

That M4 Max is nice. You have to get the upgraded Max processor to get over 36 GB of RAM. I'll have to think about this.

Those 4 Thunderbolt 5 ports are sexy.

I'm glad that they didn't remove the USB-A ports.

Interestingly both the M4 Max and M3 Ultra have support for Thunderbolt 5.

So something is definitely new with the M3 chip used in Mac Studio.

plus how stupid is it for Apple to have M4 chips across its entire line up and then wait at least half a year to to put those same chips in its Studio and Pro desktop computers? This isn't the Intel days these chips are entirely designed by Apple.

As stated above this is NOT the old Apple, these are not them Intel days. I expect an updated Studio and Pro to be launched this year. Not literally in 12 months plus time as Gurman claims.

Got it!
