Thanks, I will try to reinstall it - So it only cause by the adapter.?

I just returned 970 EVO plus ( which is produced on 05-2019, don't know if its new firmware) it can be regained, but it will interrupted during format to APFS.
There will be no speed boost your using the Plus.

Yes, it's the adapter that would cause the width to be X2.

I am on a 13" MacBook Air 2015 with i5 5250U, original 128GB SSD & 8GB RAM, which I got from used market a year ago.

When I first got it, as it is my first ever Mac computer, I felt the system not as snappy as I expected. I can stand with the slight wait when opening up apps, such as safari or finder, but whenever I go "back" on safari to previous web page, there is always a half second pause/freeze on the web page before I can scroll up/down. During the freeze the mouse is movable and if I move it down to the hidden dock, the dock will pops up. So I can tell it is the lag from safari more than the actual system lag. I first suspect it is caused by RAM, but since I have the maxed out 8GB ram I doubt it. So it came down to the SSD.

I checked my SSD read write speed and both goes around 6xx~7xxMB/s (UPDATE: just ran the test again on Catalina yeild 7xxMB/s Read 5xxMB/s Write), which match the result from this thread and other forum. I also researched that best result after upgrading to a NVME SSD is around 14xxMB/s capped by the PCI-e 2x spec of the device.

My question is:
- Does anyone experience similar safari lag issue when they are on original ssd?
- does the issue solved after upgrading to NVME? another word, is the 7xxMB/s difference between original and NVME SSD the cause of the lag I mentioned?

I don't actually mind having only 128GB storage as my usage is mainly web browsing and light document task, and movie watching. Investing more money on it does not make sense if the cause of safari lag is not from the SSD itself, or in fact that is how macOS behaves. Thanks for answering in advance.

I would suggest you do clean install OS again. To see it will no issue. Even with original SSD, there should no such lag. The speed for original SSD is normal.

Thanks for your reply. Strangely after updating to Catalina and the Safari update, the lag seem to have improved significantly.

Reply to your suggestion, before I settle to this 2015 8GB RAM unit, I did own a 2013 4GB RAM unit for few days and had Mojave running on it. The lag were pretty much the same on both unit, which lead me thinking if it is SSD related.

Again, if the safari update could improve the lag issue, I suspect it is not caused by SSD Read Write speed. If that's the case, I am leaning towards keeping my 2015 MBA as is.

Still love to hear more people's experience. Cheers.

Hi, I´m new here and kinda feel desesperate.
I bought the 1 TB v-nand-ssd 970 EVO with an m2 adapter, im using a macbook air from 2017 (no ssd solded), have conected the ssd to the mac but it wont show in disc utility. I have created a bootable USB with ubuntu and i can see it there as so i have formated from it but i still can´t see it.
I´ve used mac terminal in order to show all discs and i can only see the apple "recovery" one.
Can anyone help me with some info or how to solve this?
I still have the old ssd which came with the pc and it has Catalina.
Do I have to buy an adaptor in order to be recognizable ?
Is there a way so solve this without the adaptor and using a windows pc which has m2 port?

ANY HELP IS WELCOME. Thanks!

Are you using a high Sierra installer?

Is the Air running a high Sierra bootrom?
Hi, thanks for your response. Actually I have tried several installers, from the one that come in the recovery mode (high sierra) to new catalina one which I downloaded the .dmg from a trusted server and burned into a USB, but to he honest haven't tried this last method with high Sierra.(Ill try it tomorrow). Any other alternative?
Thanks!

Are you using a Mac to create the USB installer?

Are you sure the MacBook is running the latest bootrom?

Have you tried installing and running the OS from an external drive?

Tried using internet recovery?

Did you try other adapter? I guess that may cause by the adapter that SSD can not be found by disk utility.

1 No, I´m about to tried.
2 Rom verison im using 190.0.0.0.0 // SMC version 2.27f2
3 Dont really think I understand what you mean, do you mean if I have tried to run OSX on a usb and see if the mac recognizes the ssd? If so I havent tried yet but good point.
4 If internet recovery is the menu where the globe appears spinning for 3 min or so and then the "menu" appears with disk utility , install software, ask for help online etc option. Yes i have tried several times and when i try to select the disk where to install the OS, the new ssd doesnt appear.

If there is any step-by-step to follow or what you guys exactly did id appreciate it. ^^

Ill let you know my progress.

I still think the problem is M2 adapter. As you mentioned that SDD can used on windows PC - means no problem there. However, you can not see the SSD in disk utility-whatever status, I think that causes by the adapter - connects between Mac SSD interface to your M2 std SSD.
I suggest you to get other adapter to try.
BTW, your old SSD worked well?

Sorry I thought I said that I had made a bootable Ubuntu usb and I could see the SSD on the Terminal disk list that's why I have concluded that's the prob is not with the SSD nor theh adapter.

Sorry I misunderstood. Did you use MacOS bootable usb boot up your MBA, then under disk utility - no Samsung SSD?

If main SSD has no OS, boot from MacOS usb will automatically go into recovery.
I still suggest you to try other adapter. Which is only point may cause problem.

The last possible is your Samsung 970 EVO 1TB is not compatible with MBA.

Ouuu mama!! We have a winner!! 😇

Big stupid and silly mistake... the ssd wasnt properly making contact... but cant understand ubuntu could see it.

After trying everything I changed by error the screw that holded the SSD and adapter and voilà!!

Seriously, this made me go nuts.

Thanks everybody for your help.

I have a problem. I bought a Samsung 970 PRO 1TB to install in my Mid-2015 Macbook Pro (Macbook pro 115, A1398) I attached a picture of the SSD adapter I have used. However, after installing it I could not power on the Macbook. Nothing is happening. I tried to put it into recovery mode etc, but no response..
After this, I installed my old drive back in and everything was normal again. What might be the problem and what can I do?

Try what I made, make a bootable Linux usb and use terminal so see if it recognises it. If so the adapter is fine and the SSD too.
Can you get into recovery mode with the original SSD?

Yes, I can get it into recovery mode with the original SSD. Will try to make a bootable Linux usb now.

That is, MacOS has there “own” way for there hardware :), that is why I always suggest use bootable MacOS usb to do.

It could not recognise it after makeing a partition with Bootable linux usb...

You have to use MacOS boot usb to do so. If there no disk under disk utility, it more from adapter than ssd.
If there has Samsung 970 show up, than you have to erase, than make volume as APFS.

Hi Guys,

I have MBA 2015 and i bought now 2017. I want to change SSD for bigger. I wrote all topic but i have huge head :)

First : Sintech adapter - which one i should choose ? Large, black ? https://www.amazon.com/Sintech-Adapter-Upgrade-2013-2015-MacBook/dp/B01CWWAENG

Second : SSD - i think that for me the best would be Adata SX8200 PRO ( no battery drain and it is "colder" that other SSD ( like Samsung)

Third: I never change/instal/reinstall Mac os. It is very difficult ? I wrote that i should do bootable USB with my OS. In 2015 use Mojave 10.14.4 and bootrom is 184.0.0.0.0. My macOS have about 2 years - when i do USB ( later i will find tutorial on YT ;) ) it will be correct ? Or i need "clean" version Mojave ? Maybe bootable USB is always clean but i don't know.

In 2017 i don't know which version macOS will be instal. My package arrive to me on Monday.

Thanks and I'm waiting for reply :)

When you want to use NVMe SSS, that OS should not lower than 10.13.
it’s easy to install OS.
- first you need build up a bootable OS device.i.e USB.
- after install adapter with SSD. Boot from USB,entrydisk utility. Easer the content of new SSD.
- install OS,10.13 - 10.15 whatever, followed install introduced.

finish.
Good luck
