I've got mine, and it should be all the laptop I need for a few more years. :)
[doublepost=1477593927][/doublepost]

The base model without touchstrip and only two ports is $1500.

I thought that base model was the new air, which it turned out to be. Look above at my prediction.
[doublepost=1477593995][/doublepost]
I just don't think they can sell "old" airs with that screen in 2016. I really think their line up is going to be pricey.

$1299 MacBook
$1599 Air
$1799+ pros

The only other option is the MacBook slides into the $999 price and the air goes to $1299, but this is apple. I fully expect my first prediction. 15" pros will be right at $2300 for a base model.

:)

Next headline "Apple quietly discontinues the Macbook Air". The laptop that revolutionized the industry.

Apple only gave us "dead Air" with their most popular computer product line.

I pretty much knew it was coming. I just didn't expect the viable replacement was going to be $500 more. But nothing surprising because we know Apple loves $$$ more than us and caters more directly to iOS users.

The significant thing is, they just "killed" the MBA by only introducing new MBP's. I'd guess the existing 13" MBA might hang around for quite some time now though...

Kinda makes sense. The 12" MacBook is more "air like". They want an all retina lineup. I do not like the way they added a 2nd pro.

They should have:

Macbook Air (what the current 12" MacBook is should be here)
Macbook (what the 13" new pro is)
Macbook Pro (what the 15" pro is)

Adding a second pro is very confusing to the average consumer.

I think we just saw apple's response to there ever being a "late 2016" air. It was a clean FU to the average consumer who was hoping for new air with a better display at the same pricepoint. The macbook air got so many to switch over to apple, but now (at least here in Europe) the "cheapest" macbook is the underpowered 12" macbook starting at 1499 euros and the new mbp for 1749 euros. The only thing the macbook air would've needed is a retina display and that's it. Why not make a roughly 1000 euro retina-version of the macbook air? The ipad pro sure as hell can't replace this laptop niche.

That new base MBP is the "retina-version of the macbook air".

It is the same weight, has less total volume and it is thinner.
It uses the same type of CPU (15 W range), even the battery capacity didn’t change (54 Wh).

New specs:
  • 2560 by 1600 pixels (before: 1440 by 900 pixels)
  • 500 nits brightness (300 nits brightness)
  • 2,0 GHz (1,6 GHz)
  • Intel Iris Graphics 540 (Intel HD Graphics 6000)
The MBA 256 GB was $1.200,-
The new base MBP is $1.500,-

Performance wise it is a solid upgrade, especially graphics. That new retina display is probably stunning. I actually think it’s a nice package and totally worth the additional 300,-! I don’t like that they removed the SD card slot though.

Of course it is, but people with still be whining all the same because.. it's not called "Air".. it drops legacy ports like MagSafe and USB-A.. Apple won't give them retina display at the same price.. and.. well, Apple users will always find something to whine about.

It's a little worse than that. The MBA had four "holes" to plug things into. The new MBP only has two. So if you have, for example, an external screen and power adapter, it's a full house. I guess dongles/hubs will address that, but I usually have something plugged into all the ports on my MBA.

Apple is dead... I'm sorry not changing any of your products for 2 years and expecting to stay relevant is going to bite you in the ass. Apple smells like Nintendo/Atari/Sega a very arragont company that think they are better then the people they are selling to and they have no Rival. That people have no power when purchasing crap and we don't have other choices.

So the iPad Air, Mac Mini, iMac are 2 year old, Mac Pro 3 years old, Air is now 1 year old. Their huge announcement for their pros for all the money they cost is a stupid LED screen that kills battery life?

O its ok they showed us a TV channel !!! on the Apple TV that makes things better

I agree that performance wise this is a good upgrade. For us in the eurozone it, however, just seems like apple is jacking up the prices with gimmicks. Here, the MBA is priced at about 920-1020 Euros. This model, as I was corrected earlier, will still be sold. The new model will be priced at 1749 euros. Now that's a huge difference for an average person. Those looking to get into macs will surely find it turnoff that they still have to pay about 1000 euros to get the cheapest mac with a subpar display.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel apple is slipping back to a pre-steve jobs era. Anyone else feeling this?

They weren't the biggest company in the world though. ;)

No, it is not because that one cable that connects your monitor also powers your MacBook.

Have never seen how they implemented this. Do you need a special monitor, or can you plug anything into the same port as the power adapter (such as an HDMI TV)? In any case, that would be three ports and the current MBA has four.

Looks like maybe, just maybe the 13" is still going to be in the line up for now. Unfortunately the writing is on the wall and if it does stay for now, sooner than later, the 12" MacBook will takes it place. Which I don't mind if they wait until they can get the MacBook to $999.00 except for the processor and I would like to see more than one port. Maybe, just maybe they will announce a multi port MacBook and i5 model, although I really doubt it.

Won't it be 10 years old in 2017, the MacBook Air. Maybe that when they get ride of it but I really hope not as I love the 13" MacBook Air. Best all around student, family, and basic computing laptop to me. I understand it not powerful enough or the screen is not good enough for a lot of people. But for an entry level Apple laptop it's great, for internet, coding, light photo editing, etc...

Can you tell I like my MacBook Air 13"?

Think they will ever put an i5 or something similar to it in the just MacBook at some point or is heat an issue? Like a future M processor as powerful as the i5, or is it already there? I do like the 12" MacBook just not the price. Heck I can even get used to the 1 port with an adapter.

Apple must have a laptop option at $899 or $999, or even less.

No problem, Apple can sell them an iPad Pro with a keyboard

From today's Wall Street Journal...

http://www.wsj.com/articles/as-apples-macbook-lineup-grows-cheaper-options-die-off-1477600110

it’s surprising that you now have fewer low-price choices than before. Two entry-level Mac laptops are now gone from Apple retail: the $900 11-inch MacBook Air and the $1,100 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro.

Does Apple just not care about the less wealthy? Perhaps. But another way to read the shift is Apple wants to push entry-level laptop users to the iPad Pro, which starts at $600. (With a keyboard case, it’s still just $750.)

Apple is just too cocky and its going to bite them in the ass

How difficult would it have been to just give the Mac Mini, Mac Pro, iMac and Macbook Air the new Intel chips !!!!!!!!!!

They at least lowered the iPad Air Price when they didnt update it when they updated the iPad Mini.

I'm holding onto my early 2015 MBA until it dies, and then I might jump ship back to Windows.

It's true. Though they still have the $1000 13" MBA. I agree they are pushing the education market to iPad. However, in an iPad vs. Chromebook contest, I don't think iPad wins.

Not the MBA model that I wanted, so I picked up a 2016 512gb m7 MacBook. I just can't justify the price hike and the reduce in battery life for the new rMBP lite version.

If I was in the market for a laptop I'd pick up a refurbished Air for $850. Probably the least expensive laptop we'll ever see from Apple at this point.
