Hello All,

FINAL UPDATE: This issue has seems been fixed with MacOS Mojave, update 10.14. If you have the issue below and are currently running on High Sierra 10.13.4 or later, try upgrading your computer to MacOS Mojave and the static on wake should go away.

If you continue to see the issue, please report it to Apple customer service so that they can alert their engineering dept that the problem still exists, so that the issue can be addressed in a further update.

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.

UPDATE 2: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

Yes, it’s a minor bug in High Sierra 10.13.4. I’ve seen it on two other 2017 MacBook Pro’s (13” / 15”).

I have experienced this issue in varying machines since Apple started using auto-switching graphics back in 08/09

Thank you for confirming. I was afraid that since this was a refurb there was a chance that this was an issue with the GPU or something else, but glad to know its not. Never saw this issue on my 2012 MacBook Pro 15", but every machine is different. I will wait to see if the next update fixes this issue.

Yup, I've seen it on my 15" 2016 MBP. Like csurfr says, it has disappeared in recent updates.
Interestingly I am running the newest macOS (HS 10.13.4), and am having this issue. I know that there were many reports of other people having holographic or other unusual effects on their 2016-2017 MacBooks, but that was on older OS (10.13.2). I have seen very few posts about a tv-like "static" on these machines.

oh man, you rebooted your comp and it still does that? The apple technician wants me to do that. But if it is still going to occur I see no point.

Did anyone try reinstalling the entire OS system? And if so did that work?
Yes I did that, and it still had the static afterward.

Ive got the static too. Its horrific. The update didn't fix it.

Yes, I did that multiple times. And it still has the "Snow".

Im even on the betas and it still does it for me as well. Ive only noticed this for about the last month or so.
This makes me feel a bit better, as it would indicate more of a software update issue, since the new update was roughly a month ago now.

I've got the same issue since last update to High Sierra 10.3.4 on my MBP 2017. I've tried with a PRAM Reset and I was thinking in a fresh install of the OS but fortunately I found this thread. I hope that Apple fix this soon, but I'm fine if it's a bug, I was worried about some hardware problem.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with the issue, and it definitely is sounding like an issue with the most recent 10.13.4 update on High Sierra. I got this MacBook Pro right after the update release, so I didn’t know if this happened on 10.13.3.

Like you, if this is just a bug I’m fine with it, hopefully Apple releases a fix for it at some point in the future.

Mid-2017 15" MacBook Pro w. 4GB Radeon on HS 10.13.4

I noticed this issue start with 10.13.4 but mine isn't static; it's an ALL BRIGHT RED display for about 0.5sec before going to login screen. I'm only seeing this pop-up if the Mac has entered Standby Mode (as opposed to sleep).

I use an external monitor probably 50% of the time, sometimes in closed-lid mode, via HDMI on an Apple USB-C multipart adapter.

I'm otherwise have no issues with the machine, it's working fine. My guess is this is just a minor software glitch.

Same issue here on my MBP 13". Just got it a week or so ago and noticed this happening as well. Static screen for 1-2 seconds upon waking after long sleep cycles, then it disappears and everything goes back to normal. My static screen looks just like yours, but mine has a pink-ish hue to it. Running high sierra 10.13.4

Having same issue with 2017 MBP no touch bar. Is anyone with or with out this issue having an issue with the laptop dying with battery charge still left? No low battery warning is given and the only way to wake it up is to plug into power source, which then shows around 25% battery remaining.
