No, in my case I have a 2017 13” MBP with Touchbar, which only has the integrated Intel GPU, and it has the snow static issue. I wish I could’ve afforded a 15” with the dual graphics.

No you don’t! Now if the 2018 came with the T1 chip and keyboard replacement program I’d of been crying when 8th gen Quad Core “U” dropped, but for now I only wanted Kaby Lake for the 10bit HEVC Hardware decoding block which apparently is part of the iGPU and while you can get 10bit HEVC hardware acceleration from even a 15” 2016 Radeon (Polaris) 460 graphic card (techinically only 2016 MBP model having 10bit HEVC (GPU) Hardware Acceleration, initially the HDCP 2.2 DRM procotol and only the Kaby Lake iGPU was able to allievate load on the CPU and allow native 4K material without doing full software x265 decodes.

From what I’ve heard, they are beginning to support 10bit Hardware Acceration using the dedicated Polaris GPUs but #1 Along with Intel’s updated driver releases allowing some hybrid decodes of 10bit HEVC (if intel 5XXX) the GPU was doing little to help the CPU load doing a hydrid CPU/GPU decode of 10bit HEVC on machines like 2016 15” MBP where I would of initially agreed with you if you were still okay using battery hogging dedicated graphics killing battery life along with STILL BARELY allieviated CPU loads using a video codec that take 50X the power to decompress and play over H264 predecessor!

Now why would you want to use a battery hogging Radeon 560 with your power efficient Intel 650 iGPU which is also a good deal BETTER than a 15” Intel 630 anyway? The 560 or 560X only manage 1.9 Teraflops to “maybe” 2.6 which is WELL short of any VR level graphics. Heck PS4 Pro manages 4.1 and still is more “1080p 4K upscale VR 60FPS”

Only the iMAC 5K with the RX 580 manages the entry level 5.5 Teraflops needed for 4K 60FPS VR? I see my Radeon 560 as wasted and not future proofed to do “anything”? We ALL know no one is gaming on their 15” Macs b/c they can’t even get Nvidia support for cards running in a T3 eGPU in Bootcamp.

I AM silently grateful to still have a “real” HK, HQ, QM, H, etc Quad Core with no Bridge OS T2 Chip hijinx and while also having protection of keyboard replacement? But a iGPU 650 is nearly as good as many dedicated GPUs from 15” models in the past so unless you are like ME and wanted the screen real estate having already come down from my first (modern) 17” mid-2009 MBP w/1900x1200 then you have best of both worlds.

I’m sitting here pissed wondering why I’d still have to deal with an inferior Intel 630 if I sprang for a 6 core 15” 2018 MBP too! Once upon a time 13” and 15” shared same iGPU, definitely not situation where now iGPU you want to use if you’ve want your 15” battery to last, is inferior to the 13”! Basically I sometimes use my 15” on the road as a beside TV and 13” not big enough for my girlfriend and I to watch shows.

Since A11 chip I do take my iPhone 8 Plus and lightning to HDMI adapter and use hotel TVs when I can save on potential damage taking my $3000 machine out of the house.

Hi there!

It's now 2019 and in this time of the year in 2018 I bought my Macbook pro with Touch Bar. I never had this problem untill now. Does anyone know if there might be another problem or that it's just my laptop and I have to send it back?

Thank you!

Hello All,

FINAL UPDATE: This issue has seems been fixed with MacOS Mojave, update 10.14. If you have the issue below and are currently running on High Sierra 10.13.4 or later, try upgrading your computer to MacOS Mojave and the static on wake should go away.

If you continue to see the issue, please report it to Apple customer service so that they can alert their engineering dept that the problem still exists, so that the issue can be addressed in a further update.

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.

UPDATE 2: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

Have you updated to the newest Mojave update? After one of the earlier Mojave supplemental updates the issue went away for me.

I also have this problem, mid 2015 15" mbp running Mojave. I have an external monitor connected to it via HDMI, but not sure if it makes a difference.

It's just a gray static screen for a second, then normal login prompt appears. I'm going to try waking it up from sleep with everything unplugged and power plugged in.

I am still getting this issue on Mojave on 10.14.4 with a MacBook Pro 13" 2017 no Touch Bar. Whenever I wake it from sleep it will show static and the apple logo will sometimes go red when I boot it up and show visual artefacts.

I just bought a MBP 17 refurbished and see a similar issue : it doesn't wake up from sleep very often, and I have to press power button to reboot... very annoying !!

For what is worth, I also have a mid 2015 15" MBP running Mojave (10.14.4) and I have the same static screen issue. I'm not connected to an external monitor, though, so it's apparently not related to that.

I bought my daughter a 2019 13" MBP on Friday, and on Saturday when she opened it up from sleeping it had the same screen glitch. Closing and opening the cover again fixed it, but we'll probably swap it out with a different unit within the 14 day window. This thread doesn't give me hope that a new unit will be any better.

I have Mojave 10.14.6 and am getting the same issue. Any known workarounds, as it seems the fix from Apple will be a while?
[doublepost=1567734142][/doublepost]I tried the screensaver workaround, with 10/15min timeouts, didnt work!

Hi all,

I realize this thread is quite old now but just wondering if anyone is experiencing any distorted colors after waking their computer after the most recent software update (Catalina)? I recently noticed my cursor briefly turn green after waking. I know this is minor but we had pretty extensive talks of this kind of stuff back when there was a wake issue with Mojave.

It just happened to me and I googled the issue and found this thread. Here are my images and one video:

I had this issue, but it was resolved with Mojave. I have not seen it again with Catalina, and I'm on my computer ten hours a day (and would likely notice any issue). I'm surprised others are still experiencing the static and wonder what is behind the variability of the issue.

This started happening on my 13 inch, (2017, 4 Thunderbolt Ports) MacBook Pro recently.

After reading this thread, I suspect it might be a software issue that started with Catalina 10.15.2

Hoping to find a solution here without having to take it in to Apple.

Hi Nathan, Have you upgraded to Catalina 10.15.2? If so, has the issue returned?

I have a mba 2019 model that has this bug. The only way to fix it is to close the lid and re-open. Then it disappears. Currently running 10.15.3, the latest as of this writing. I really hope it's a software bug. It's really annoying.

Having this issue on my Late 2013 MacBook Pro. First thought maybe my Mac was failing but it looks like it must me software? Also on the newest version of Catalina.

Any news whether 10.15.4 fixes this issue? I installed it on both of my macs but too early to tell.
