Oh god what a relief i found this thread, having the same issue.. MBP 2017 no touch bar here and i believe since 10.13.3 not sure though. Will post the screenshot later after i success doing so. i don't believe they overlooked this.. Please let us know if you hear an update from Apple :)

I had a chat with apple yesterday. They told me to bring my MacbookPro to service, however I believe it is a software problem.

Anyone get to the bottom of this? It's very off-putting
Yeah, base on my conversations with AppleCare, it is a known issue that they will be working on fixing.

Apple is requesting to take my device to assist with identifying and correcting the issue, as they have been getting a few reports of this issue. It is apparently most likely a software bug they will have worked out in the next update (hopefully).

I havent noticed this issue on my device in the past 3-4 days. Weird
It can be intermittent sometimes for me too. It had to be long enough of a sleep cycle to put it in a deep sleep, usually 12 hours. Sometimes though it do after only 6 hours, or sometimes not at all after 12+ hours

Hello All,

UPDATE: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.
Does your replacement device still have the issue?
[doublepost=1525715987][/doublepost]
That’s promising, I actually just got my second replacement from Apple and it has the issue, definitely a software issue. I may have to try the beta.
they gave you a new device and it is still happening? Did they mention if this will damage the computer hardware?

No, they did not confirm that this will cause any damage to any of the hardware. They just indicated that it is a software issue, and they wanted my other laptop to “capture” the issue.

For now, I am just going to turn my MacBook off if it’s going to be 12 or more hours before I use it again. If they fix it then I’ll be less worried about leaving it on long term. For now it appears just an annoying cosmetic issue, as everything else works fine.

My advice, is if you have the issue, and have AppleCare or are within the initial warranty, report it. It will cover you if you ever have an issue in the long run, and will help alert engineering that this may be a more widespread issue.

Curious if it this affects people with dual GPUs (integrated and discrete) only? --My guess is probably.

No, in my case I have a 2017 13” MBP with Touchbar, which only has the integrated Intel GPU, and it has the snow static issue. I wish I could’ve afforded a 15” with the dual graphics.

2017 13 Pro with TB - it came with 10.13.3 and it gave me static. Did all updates - still doing it. I thought perhaps it was the Apple Multiport adapter, so I bought a USB-C to HDMI cable. Sadly, exact same issue. I'll await an update that hopefully fixes it. Very upsetting that a 2000 dollar computer has an issue like this.

I use my computer connected to a monitor 70% of the time and this is a real inconvenience and it feels like it could be damaging to my monitor - probably just my paranoia.

So when I first started reading this thread my 2017 13" MB Pro with TB was running iOS 10.3.3, I did not have the static wake from sleep screen.

Since updating to 10.3.4 I now have the issue. It is only a brief flash of a blue and pink static screen but it is there. I tend to lean toward it being a software issue. But I am glad I purchased AppleCare +.

Yeah, that’s what it appears. I don’t know how widespread this is, but it seems to be common enough that Apple wanted to capture my device to help them identify the issue. Definitely seems to be a software issue.

Considering how much money we drop for these MacBook pros, a few more hundred for AppleCare is worth the extra piece of mind.

Last week didn't see the static even after long sleep cycles, but yesterday it appeared again. Unfortunately I don't have AppleCare. Is there any other way to report software problems? Maybe through beta program?

If you are using the most current macOS beta on the machine, I’d definitely submit the bug through the bug reporting process for beta software.

However, if you aren’t using the current macOS beta, and you don’t have AppleCare the best way to report these bugs is through the feedback webpage on Apples website (https://www.apple.com/feedback) If you select MacBook Pro and follow the prompts there is an option to report bugs.

Having said that, if you are still within the 1 year warranty period for your machine, I’d call Apple customer service so that they can document the issue for the future. Then if for some crazy reason this turns out to be a hardware issue after your warranty is up, you’ll should still be covered for repairs, as the problem existed while under warranty. But that’s my best suggestions.

I have an update on the issue on my MacBook Pro. It seems this static will only occur for me when I resume from sleep on battery power. If I am plugged in I never see this screen when coming back from sleep. I have tested over several days...

You know this crossed my mind, but I never tested it (I don’t like leaving my MacBook on the charger to unless I’m using it for something intensive).

My only question is do you have the laptop set for the hard drives to be put to sleep when not in use when plugged in (under energy saver settings? I know some people leave their hard drives awake when sleeping if the laptop is plugged in, but not when on battery because it’ll drain the battery faster.

The reason I ask is one of the Apple techs suggested it could have something to do with the MacBook going into a “hard” sleep where everything shuts off. I wonder if leaving the harddrives awake when sleeping makes that difference (hence my question).

Having said that, I am going to test leaving it plugged in too and see if it has the issue after a long sleep cycle plugged in.
