I believe in order to provide a video clip to engineering you’d have to actually contact AppleCare customer service, and a tier 2 service rep can help direct your video to engineering. It may take a an extra 30 minutes, but just be adamant that you want to speak with a senior service advisor so that they can help get this on to engineering.
Thanks! I'm in touch with them now-have opened a case- and will update with what happens.

I have again woken my computer and not experienced static. Yesterday my battery was above 80% but unplugged and today was 100% and plugged in. I'm going to run my computer down to half and let it go to sleep and see if that induces the static. If it does, I think it may possibly have something to do with power management upon wake. (Because Apple won't do their job, I thought I would try and narrow the cause down a bit.)

My laptop is usually always above 50% when I have the issue. I have had it do it when it’s a full charge (not plugged in). I think you are right it has something to do with power management while on battery power. It’s likely long sleep cycles are putting the hard drive and cpu/gpu into a deep sleep, and something in the process of booting from the deep sleep is out of order or something.

Sad that we have to be the guinea pigs for Apple, but I still will take this over using Windows laptops.. I use Windows 10 everyday for my work and there are so many more bugs in that OS than what MacOS has. For now I just shut my MacBook down completely until I use it the next day. I’ll live with the static until Mojave comes out, after that I’ll will contact Apple (AGAIN, ugh) if this issue still exists.

It was a silly thought because I too have had the issue when almost fully charged. I couldn't make it happen on command with low battery anyway. I wondered if there was a way to force the computer into a deep sleep but can't seem to find anything. It would be good to isolate the problem and reliably recreate it.

As for Windows, I've used it minimally since 2004. I think I would find it hard to move back over, not least of all because I invested in software that would cost a few thousand to repurchase. It was simply cheaper and less stressful to stick with Mac. I do have a copy of Windows 10 installed on a USB C thumb drive just incase I want to torture myself though.

I have a 2017 MBP 13", and I'm also having this issue.

Coming from a 2011 MBP with GPU problems, I was sacred at first. :D

Unfortunately my work requires lots of Microsoft excel and database creation solutions that work on everyone else’s windows machines, and since Microsoft refuses to make a full blown version of Office for Mac users, I’m stuck using Windows for work :(

Hello All,

UPDATE: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.

I have had this same issue with my MacBook Pro 2017. This is the first time I have found someone who is experiencing the exact issue I was. I returned four different computers to apple because of this issue before deciding not to upgrade the 5th. I left High Sierra 10.13.2 installed out of the box and never had the issue a single time. After upgrading to 10.13.5 I am now experiencing the sleep wake issue again. Looks like they have not addressed the issue.

Yeah sadly they haven’t. I thought I was the only one until I set up this thread, and now I feel better (somewhat) knowing that it is an issue many people are having. Now it’s a waiting game to see if the issue gets fixed on future updates.

My MBP 2017 comes with Sierra and I didn't have this problem when I update to first release of High Sierra. It comes with 10.3.4. It's quite weird bug. With 10.3.5 it seems a bit random, I've seen it with short sleep cycles too and sometimes with long sleep cycles didn't appear. Waiting for Mojave and thinking about fresh install when it comes.

I didn't know Office was limited for Mac... What have they missed out?

Ah yes, I've contacted Apple Care gazillion times and they said it's an interplay between software and hardware issue. Some Mac computers come with this issue and some don't. But he said that this problem could be solved through OS update, in this case, I assume it'd be Mojave. Idk but it seems unfair, since I paid so much for this computer.

this is not an issue with only MBP. I have a MacBook with the same issue. I have been reporting this as a 'pixelated' screen, and Apple had me send the MB to Apple Repair 2x, replacing the logic board twice. When that failed, after numerous, long talks with an apple senior advisor, Apple sent me a replacement. I opted to upgrade the processor & hard drive. Brand new, shipped from Shanghai. Occurred in the 1st 24 hours, before I had loaded anything on it, other than installing the latest OS update that was released while I was on the phone with Apple. And while Engineering finally advised my advisor that this is a 'known issue', that is the most info he has received. Why do the senior advisors not even know this, resulting in such a high level of frustration among customers??? argh...

I have the same issue. My macbook replaced with new macbook pro 13 inch touch bar Three times. But I have encountered the same problem with each Mac. How can I solve this problem? Is this hardware or software problem? In addition to this when I use my mac in safe mod the screen turns to turquoise color 1 second then back to normal. Does anybody heard this kind of problem?

Unfortunately there are a lot of macros, formula and shortcut features that are limited or missing in Excel and Access for Mac, so a lot of the more complicated systems we use in Windows won't work as well in Mac.

And good luck on the communications to Apple! I sure hope if enough of us report the issue they will realize the importance of the issue. I am now also getting a bug when I shut down my Mac (full shut down) where it goes to a log in screen before shutting off completely. There is most definitely a major bug in the boot/sleep cycles on High Sierra.

I'm sorry to hear you've had the issue as well. I returned 2 13" Macbook Pros w/Touchbar myself and still have the issue.

At this point I would make sure to report that your current machine still has the issue to Apple, but I wouldn't bother with doing further troubleshooting. From my conversations with apple, this is a software issue that the engineering department is aware of, and is working to fix on a future software release.

Most people on this thread are reporting that the issue has existed since MacOS High Sierra update 10.13.4, versions prior to that do not have the issue. You could try finding a copy of one of these older versions of High Sierra and install it on your machine, but keep in mind that there have been security fixes on the more recent updates that are good to have too.

Right now it's a waiting game until Apple fixes the software bug. For me personally, I have just gone to shutting my MacBook down completely if I don't plan to use within the next 12 hours.

Yeah I completely agree. This is the most I have ever paid for any electronic device (I usually buy my Macs used), but now that I have finally spent the money on a new one it is highly disappointing to have a glaring bug such as this. With all the focus they are putting on software fixes this year in MacOS and iOS, I hope this is one of the bugs they fix.

I've just updated my 2017 13" non-Touchbar MBP to 10.13.5 and I'm still seeing this static issue. Was hoping it would have been fixed in the latest update but it seems not.

Another graphics glitch I was seeing in 10.13.4 - the corrupted "beachball" mouse cursor - does seem to have been solved though.

There was also a 3rd issue in 10.13.4 where the entire screen periodically turns green when watching Netflix in full-screen mode (cycling out of full screen and back again immediately resolves it). Not sure if that one is fixed yet.

Bugger, I am hoping this is fixed soon. Yesterday I had a weird glitch on shut down, where after clicking shut down, the MacBook screen flashed and had a big charging battery symbol (like on an old fashioned iPhone) and it said battery 30%. The battery had been just fully charged to 100%. These bugs are getting really irritating

I just now noticed that your original post is from May of last year. My MacBook was purchased within the last couple of months. They told you a year ago this was likely an OS issue? If so that is a very long time to address a software issue.

I actually started the thread April 2018. It appears to only have been an issue since MacOS High Sierra 10.14.3.

oh ok. not sure what I was looking at. I just got off the phone with apple support and they are sending the report to engineering. I should hear back on Tuesday. I've also read that 10.13.6 is in beta and its likely for bug fixes. hopefully this is resolved soon.

Updated: it turns out this isn't actually fixed either. It goes away after each hard reboot, but reappears some hours later.

Symptom is that instead of the "spinning beachball" mouse cursor, you get a weird corrupted black & white mouse cursor.

Pretty sure it started with 10.13.4, around the same time the "static screen on wake" appeared.

I am currently debating on installing the public betas of Mojave once they come out so that I can report the issue to Apple if it is still occurring, in hopes that they’ll fix it before the official release of Mojave in fall.

I can only speculate but I seem to have resolved this issue by deleting Firefox. I've tried resetting NVRAM and SMC but deleting Firefox seems to have been the culprit in my case. ‍♂️

I have had the issue even on complete fresh installs of MacOS with no extra software or apps installed. Hopefully it works for you and doesn’t come back!

I don't have Firefox installed, and have a (new) refurbished MacBook 13" 2017 and it's got this issue when I awaken the MacBook from sleep. Do we need to send them back?
