I don't have Firefox installed, and have a (new) refurbished MacBook 13" 2017 and it's got this issue when I awaken the MacBook from sleep. Do we need to send them back?
No. You shouldn’t need to return it (I returned 2 MacBooks and the third one still has the issue), but I definitely contact AppleCare support and have them document the issue and report it to engineering. Try to get senior AppleCare advisor (tier 2 support)

If Firefox caused the flickering in my case, I'm wondering how much of a stretch Chrome would be. --I don't use Chrome personally but would be curious if this made any difference for others.

The only third-party software I have installed at the moment...
- PDF Expert
- Epson printer software suite.
- Fujitsu ScanSnap software suite.
- Myst (a guilty pleasure).

One oddity I did notice between two different MacBook Pro's: When I woke from Standby Mode, one would give me a screen-wide all pink/red screen before the login window. On the current one I am using now, when the flickering was happening, the screen was all-white/grey. Each time it was about 0.5 to 1sec in duration, no static but all one color. Why the colors were so different between two identical models is a peculiarity.

Hello All,

UPDATE: Hello everyone, this will serve as a final update to the issue below that I posted.

After working with AppleCare and engineering, they wanted to use my device and send me (another) replacement to identify the issue. From what I was told, this appears to be an issue with the OS, and engineering is aware of the issue. Here’s hoping the next update fixes the issue.

Thank you all for your comments below, it helped relieve stress knowing it wasn’t just me with the issue!

——————————————————

I just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro 13" w/Touchbar (Mid 2017) from Apple, and am running the most recent macOS to-date (High Sierra 10.13.4). When I lift the screen to wake the computer after a long sleep cycle (say leave it asleep overnight, on battery power), it intermittently has this issue where it displays a grey and white " static, like an old tv without antenna reception, for about 1 second, before going to the log-in screen. It does not do this on short sleep cycles, and I do not have any external monitors or eGPUs connected to it.

Also, sometimes on boot up the apple logo glitches and shows red for a second, before going back to normal. I have already reset NVRAM and SMC, and even reinstalled macOS High Sierra.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue on newer MacBooks, or have any suggestions on what this may be?

View attachment 759556

UPDATE: So as an update to all of this, I returned the MacBook to apple and received a replacement, and low and behold the new computer I received has the same issue! After long sleeps it has a snow/static on waking the computer up, with no externals plugged in, and with a fresh install of MacOS (no personal applications installed, all stock).

I have been in contact with AppleCare, and they have sent this issue up to Engineering. I am awaiting a response as to if this is "typical" of the newest software update, of is a sign of a bigger, more serious hardware issue. As soon as I get an update from Apple, I will add details to this post.

If you have this issue, report it to Apple! If it is a software issue, the more they are alerted of the issue the faster we will see a fix.
[doublepost=1529302460][/doublepost]So confirmed. A LOT of us have the same issue.

It's just annoying but I can live with it. But thinking Apple loves to boast about QUALITY, this is really something that's not up to par with their marketing of their products.

I hope the new update coming soon will fix the issue?

So all we can do now is just wait?

OH STEVE WE'RE BURNING HERE!!!

Yeah, it seems to be a waiting game at this point until the issue is corrected in a future update.

I know this is probably an unpopular view, but I'd honestly be ok with getting major software updates every other year instead of once a year, so that the bugs can be identified and corrected better before release. I feel Apple unfortunately has created their own quality control predicament by creating a public expectation of major software updates each year in September.

Don't get me wrong, I love new updates each year, but I'd rather the quality over quantity.

Hello again,
Is there any information on this issue potentially being harmful to the display? Since it seems to be an OS issue im less concerned because it will likely be fixed at some point however if its is going to be harmful to the display on my brand new computer im going to be worried.

Hey everyone! My issue with the static screen literally just started yesterday. I saw it for the first time and immediately panicked but then I found this forum. I have the MB Pro 13-inch with no touch bar and I'm running 10.13.5. I have had my computer for almost a year and just noticed the issue for the first time so I was thinking it was hardware. I hope a fix comes out soon ☹️

Thanks! I'm in touch with them now-have opened a case- and will update with what happens.
Update:
Apple is replacing my computer. My apple rep said that since it has been so long without a fix it is the best solution. Also they consider it an emerging issue and that once they get my machine the engineers will be testing it to see if it's a hardware issue. I also have been keeping a log of when the problem occurs and will be forwarding it with the computer.
Fingers crossed it doesn't emerge with the next unit.

Anyone that might be wondering.

I installed the latest beta (10.13.6) yesterday. I woke my MacBook Pro this morning and I'm still experiencing static, so they've not found a fix for it.

Mine has done it pretty much every time I've woken it from sleep on the second day of owning it. I think I managed three days in a row where it didn't display the problem but I think it was plugged in overnight.

Are they sending a new machine to you?

Hi all,

I had the same issue in a recently reinstalled macOs 10.14.5, my mac is a mid 2014 pro. It started at some point this morning.

Apple has recently replaced my display, about 2 months ago, so i spect it´s not a hardware issue. I can live with this issue, but it remember me the old nvidia issue.

Have you received your replacement computer? I had two separate replacement units and they all had the same issue. At this point I think it’s a waiting game for the software to be corrected. Not to be pessimistic, but after having three different MacBooks with the issue, I don’t think a hardware change will fix the issue. Make sure to let Apple know the issue is still there if the new one has it. Engineering needs to know this is a software issue, and simply replacing units isn’t fixing the problem

I was seriously debating on installing the beta to see if the issue was fixed, but you answered that for me. Ugh I wish it was fixed already.
[doublepost=1529623475][/doublepost]
also have this problem((( when is going to be fixed???
We are all still waiting for that answer. My guess is we will be waiting at least til the Mojave update comes out in the fall. In my conversations with Apple they could never give me much specifics other than this is likely a software issue
[doublepost=1529623591][/doublepost]
When it's plugged-in, it won't enter Standby Mode but instead uses Power Nap.
I’m curious, if I turn in Power Nap while on battery if this will have the same effect. It’ll drain the battery faster, but the static might not keep occurring... which bugs me more, battery drain or a technical glitch... lol

I tried that and it still occurs. In fact, when it does occur, I think the static takes even longer to clear when using Power Nap on battery. Won’t hurt you to try it out though! It might make a difference for you.

However! If you do use the setting I wouldn't be too concerned about the battery. Mine was still at 100% the next morning. I think what ever it does is low power.

Anyway!

I submitted feedback via the beta program yesterday so Apple will be getting news of static from all angles.

* I've just edited this post because I wrote it when I had just woken up and it made no sense to me when I read it back. lol *

I'm still speaking with Apple, a week or so after raising the issue with them. I've followed their advice so far so going through the motions of Safe Mode, SMC reset, NVRAM reset etc.

I'm waiting to see if they offer me a solution, it won't be a new laptop though, given this is a 2013 model. I can probably live with it if it is software related, my fear was primarily that it might be hardware, since I'm out of warranty.

EDIT

Apple just got back to me, they're aware of this issue and their engineers are investigating reports. They recommend staying up to date with the latest firmware and software for when they have a fix.

Visited the Apple Store in Amsterdam yesterday and asked one of the Geniuses. The problem is known intern but he could not say if they are busy with an update. However, I expect it to be fixed in one of the next updates.

I don't know if I should feel better that I found this thread. I bought my first macbook pro without a touch bar 2017 and the first error I encountered was the static monitor that happens for a second after waking it up from a long sleep time. I did talk to Apple, and they suggested me to bring it into an Apple Store, but should I? Since you guys are saying that this is a software bug and not a hardware one.

I would still at least make sure that you speak with an Apple senior support. The more people who have the issue communicated and logged with Apple support the faster engineering will get this fixed. Also, there is always a rare chance that your situation might be unique and has something else going on. I know in my instances it always takes at least 6 hours to get the glitch.

Thank you for the update! Good to know that the power nap doesn’t affect the battery that much, I might give it a try.

Just to confirm I'm seeing the same thing as everyone else:

The screen is all-white or all-red/pink when opening the lid/waking from sleep (standby mode) for about 1sec before the login window.

I just got the opportunity to talk with a senior advisor, they admitted that this is an emergent software issue and has nothing to do with the hardware. They are really working hard to fix the issue and that based on them this issue should be solved with the future updates.

This is music to my ears, glad to know they are finally confirming that it is a known software issue and will be resolved in the future. Thank you for sharing!

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports). Running 10.13.5. On top of that I have some faint horizontal lines that run across the bottom of my display. They are usually more prominent after a long sleep cycle and fade to be very faint lines on the bottom quarter inch of the display- nowhere else on the display. Very annoying.

I’m my case I have not had any horizontal lines on my MacBook. You might want to have that checked at the Apple store if they continue. The static should be fixed in a future update

Yeah I’m going into the Apple Store today. About a month ago I had to get my keyboard repaired after the keyboard and trackpad were completely unresponsive. After the repair is when those lines started to show up. On top of that, one of the Thunderbolt ports is not recongized occassionally and my keyboard is having more problems (I think it’s due to the problems mentioned in Apple’s latest repair program due to the class action lawsuits). Needless to say, I’m going to see about getting a replacement. But I’m glad to see that the static thing is something more people have because that was my biggest concern.
A note about my static, however, is that sometimes the static will persist, causing me to have to reboot my whole machine. But that’s rare. Nevertheless, I’m glad it’s getting fixed.
