Hi All, newbie here. My left speaker is muffled on a Mid 2015 MBP, Retina, 15 incn. I just installed Mojave v 10.14, earlier this week. Headphones sound fine. I used Audio MIDI setup to mute the left speaker, the right sounds fine.

I live in Guam, so no Apple store. Anyway, just want to report my issue for the record!
That's probably just your typical hardware failure - speaker failing.

Anyone else noticed their speakers randomly crackling on the new MacBook Pro 2018? It happens every so often for me. Only saw one other report so far here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8466796

Crazy how there's no unified answer from Apple. Or, not crazy, as they don't want to admit anything (especially in writing) as they could get in troubles for it.

Your guy says engineers found HW fault.

My guy says engineers are confident they found the issue and it's software.

Because there is both a hardware and a software issue. You may not be hit with the hardware issue and thus only deal with the software side.

I also had one of those “faulty hardware” Macbook Pro’s.

Stickman, mine happens 90% of the time with Bluetooth headphones. When there’s a spike in CPU usage or something unpredictable occurs like a notification. The other 10% is through normal speakers / headphone jack. It’s progressively gotten worse over the last few weeks. And I’ve been having issues with my Bluetooth mouse too. So this may be a Bluetooth issue as well as an audio issue. Yet to be confirmed.

This is my second 2018mbp. My first was experiencing KPs and other graphical issues. So I’m not a firm believer that all mbps are faultless. There is a small percentage that are faulty for whatever reason. But I guess that’s just in the margin of error.

My 2018 MBP was running OK without the crackle for a good couple of weeks after working with support and tinkering with a few things. Today, I installed Security Update 2018-002 and the crackle is back!

I can't believe it, I just got it back from my AASP. They installed a new Top Case because the loudspeakers blew up cuz of those crackling sounds. And now even after the latest updates, they are still there....

8s, 18s, 28s, 39s. Approximately every 10 seconds?

try to reinstall Mojave

That won’t do anything. Apple is having trouble controlling the T2.

There has been a long period of internal development, then there was the developer and public beta phases for High Sierra and Mojave, and still now after many system updates and many firmware updates the issues aren’t completely fixed.

So I became tired with the ‘they will fix it’ line. If it’s not done yet it’s not going to happen unless they reduce the quality or disabling functions. That’s not what we paid for.

They ****ed audio output. Literally the only thing that can’t get ****ed up after 60 years of electronic audio devices but Apple managed to do it.

Maybe one more chance and then we will have to demand machines to be replaced with the updated model with redesigned T2/3.

I bet the issue is not speaker-related, since the music skips a beat when crackling happens.
To me, it seems that something is periodically taking some extra/unexpected resource and thus corrupting the stream and/or music file decoding.
Go figure...

Just of curiosity, which hardware do you have connected to macbook? does it happen with everything unplugged? (except for charging if needed of course)

Im with Apple Support in talks , so i wonder if any of you with t2 macbook pro, can reproduce the high pitch noise while jumping through youtube timeline multiple times

More and more it looks like a problem of/with the T2 chip (from previous models too)..
If that's the case, I can't think why still doesn't take more public attention in forums and tech sites. People here have been told, that Apple is aware of the issue and a fix is coming.. But for how long yet?

Took my Mac in, and they couldn't find any hardware faults at all, but agreed there was a problem. They stated try reinstalling Mojave one last time from restore and if that fails then I'm going to get a new machine. Just trying that again, if this works, I can't believe it.

Here is my final solution to this problem... sad...

Spoiler: A new machine won't help.

I'm out of options now, some folk in this thread are saying this isn't causing a problem on their 2nd or 3rd machine, I have to try something. I've exhausted all my options, nonetheless, the Apple Engineers spoke to me and said that it was indeed a hardware issue, they explicitly stated that after they received data from my Mac.

Of course going into the store rendered useless as there was no hardware faults picked up, after reinstalling from fresh the problem still is about, that leaves me pretty much with no other options.

Anyone out there know if there are similar issues being reported on the new mac mini's? Been considering switching to one of those as my Mac Book Pro is still having issues.

I had one for a day. Mojave's installation was still working but as soon as I turned off the Mac mini, it did not work anymore. There was a soft whine from the capacitors but that was it. After several times of power off and on again, he went but boot into a mode where I was asked to reset the hard disk password. This happens every time after shutting down ... PRAM reset or something else did not help. New installation also not. Got it sent back the next day and now stay with my Razer ...
