I need a new case for my rMBP 13". I prefer something cheap, lightweight, protective enough. I was looking at those Targus and Insignia messenger bags. I had two bags, but the material tends to wear out quick or the straps tend to break from too much tension. I do admit I added too much weight to a lot of my previous PC messenger bags like when I took my Dell on my last trip. Now I have a MBP, I want to protect it. I was thinking a Spek combo with an insignia bag. I also want to get a keyboard cover too. Especially with my dell's keys breaking easily.

Lately, I've been using Thule backpacks and I love them. Top loading and you can put a lot in them. Seems to have protection all around as well (sides, etc). For the keyboard cover, I would be careful as I don't think apple recommends them as it may damage your screen. Another idea I would consider is getting a Tech21 shell as it has protection compared to the speck shells, etc).

They have covers at the Apple Store though. Thule looks expensive. I am looking for a messenger bag style to carry my MBP.

From what I've read here and elsewhere it's not reccomended having the keyboard cover on when the laptop is shut as it is likely to damage the screen. You would need to take it off before closing the laptop.

Had a spluge and ordered myself the Joli Limited edition for my macbook.

I got the last one they ever made lol

Everything has to match so i also got

Phone cover
Ipad cover
notebook cover
cable holders
wallet

Cost me nearlly 400 euro's but i knew it would annoy the heck out of me to turn up to a meeting with odds and sods colours.

Everything came hand signed which i thought was a nice touch.

Not sure if anyone has seen this as well, but i'm probably going to back this bag as well

I was about to ask about the Thule as well. I'm really considering it.

So I ordered the Thule and it came in today. I'm not really satisfied with it, certainly because of the price. You cannot place the MacBook inside the sleeve without opening it fully, since the elastic in the corners hold it back. It is really snug, but the zippers come too close to the corners of the MacBook for my taste.

So yeah, I'm probably returning it. For this premium price I shouldn't have to worry the zipper will scratch my device and I want to be able to slide it in the sleeve vertically, not having to open and close it fully. Just my experience with it. Oh yeah, and it has an extremely strong chemical smell when you get it out of the packaging.

Edit: I do want to point out that when it is in the sleeve, I think it's protected very well. Case seems very rigid and I think it protects the MacBook well. But the cons outweigh the pros for me ...

I finally got it. Overall, I'm really happy with it. It's a bit hefty, but it's high quality with padded interiors, umpteen pockets, and mental buckles as opposed to cheap plastic. My only wish is that it was about an inch larger in terms of depth so that I could fit more books in it, but it's sufficient for my needs and will help force me to carry less weight. It's full of pocket. The flap (which velcros to the front has two large zip pockets on both sides which is perfect for an iPad or iPhone, notebook, etc. There is large slide in pocket on the back side for a notebook, or thin item. It has a 15" laptop pocket, one are main pocket, and then a few smaller open/zip pockets for miscellaneous items and in one pocket it has slots for pencils, calculators, etc. Kind of pocket overload, but it fits my needs and looks very stylish in my opinion.

Oh! And it has an adjustable strap with a movable shoulder pad so you don't sore from the weight.

The main complaint on amazon (it had 4.5 out of 5 stars) was that there was no handle on the top. I never use those anyway so that didn't bother me.

That bags look amazing... just what I was looking for. Can you tell me, is that a 13in or 15in rMBP?

Oh okay. I am getting a 13 rMBP and I can't decide if I should get the 13 or the 15 bag. Any thoughts?

Well, I'm going to carry textbooks so I'm glad I have the extra large bag. It is long enough for me to fit in some books and binders and have the charger on the end.

Do you know if the jump from 13 to 15 only increases the width or does it also increase the depth of the bag? Could you take a pic of it with something for scale by any chance?

Im not able now, but if you go on Amazon it will give you the W-H-L dimensions of each size. The 15" must be a little deeper because the 15" MacBook Pro is bigger and it doesn't stick out.

I think the width of the bag is the same, it's just deeper and longer.

Hey, I got home and tried a few shots. My ideal bag would probably be a little thicker (more horizontal space) but this bag definitely compensates with extra pockets and is extremely high quality. It feels rugged, even if you over stuff it. The problem I found is that to get an extremely large messenger bag, you have to get a flimsy one (they're almost like stitched grocery bags with a strap). I wanted something durable with good stitching and padded pockets. Several laptop bags didn't have any padding, so you would bang the laptop around when you set it down, dropped it, or bumped into a wall. This one has proven relatively roomy and rugged with padded pockets.

All these shots were taken with my 15" MacBook Pro inside the bag. So if you didn't need that on you, you'd gain a little more space. They're not the best shots, but I have bad lighting and the bag is hard to hold with one hand while you take shots with the other and keep yourself out of the frame. :p

I posted a few images to help give you an idea. I used a 1" textbook, a 3" binder, a 0.5" binder, and a Cheeze-It box (why not!).

I'd say 2-2.5" is ideal. You can fit a 3" binder in there, but that's a max (a little tight too, but doable). What's nice though, is that you have many more pockets than just the main compartment. There is a large zip pouch on both sides of the cover-flap and a really large pocket on the back (see iPad shot). You could fill the compartment with binders and books and still be able to fit an iPad, notebook, or folder in that back pocket. The way it's made, stuffing the main compartment doesn't really make the back pocket unusable. There are also smaller pockets on the very front of the bag for smaller things likes a calculator, charger, iPod, pencils, etc.

My typical load would be my MacBook Pro, a 0.5" binder, a 1-1.5" textbook, and my iPad. This bag can hold that plus a little. And it's long enough so that you can fit something next to the textbooks like a charger, bottle, or a snack.

Edit: To clarify, all the shots of the bag next to a binder is using that large 3" binder

So I have some info on the Case Logic Sculpted Sleeve for the MBPr 13".
I ordered it to check out as an alternative to the Thule Gauntlet 3.0 I got earlier.

The Case Logic placed the Thule in a new (better) perspective. The Case Logic has a ridiculously amount of room on all sides surrounding the MacBook, which makes it slide around a lot. I think it was designed long ago for a larger 13" MBP (did they change dimensions?) but my 2015 device had way too much room. Moreover, the velcro strap doesn't do anything, but if you try to place the MBPr on top of the strap, the laptop rocks over it ...

It's cheaper than the Thule, but it's definitely going back. No thought went into that design. I'm keeping the Thule Gauntlet 3.0, it fits snug around the MacBook and I'll be a bit careful using the zipper around the corners.

Can anyone recommend me a slim and stylish case with really good protection as I'm going traveling for a year? I have a Incase sleeve at the minute but don't think it will protect my MacBook Pro enough.

Hello everyone, I got a 15 inch MacBook Pro yesterday, the Apple Store didn't have the 'Acme skinny sleeve' that I would've got and did have on my 13 inch air.

Before I ordered one online I realised my MacBook will not fit in my over the shoulder bag now it's 15 inch and before I buy a sleeve I was thinking it would be good to buy a new bag with a dedicated laptop pouch.

There are so many bags out there and I figured that if I posted here first I may be able to get a selection of tried and tested bags rather than having to sort through the crap! (Not asking for others to sort through for me, I'm thinking the sorting has already been done!)

Looking for a backpack style bag, with a sleeve for my 15 inch MacBook and then room for my DSLR and GoPro bits and pieces in the main section.

What would you recommend?

Thanks

For what your asking for i'd recommend this.

For me this carries, my DSLR, 2 additional lenses, my ipad, my macbook, 3 different charges, my lens cleaning kit, my tripod and a few strap variances.

North Face have some really good practical back packs with a dedicated laptop compartment. I have the Borealis which has a 15" sleeve although I have a 13" MacBook Pro which I keep in an Incase ICON sleeve which fits in there perfectly. They have other bags too some which are bigger. You should check those out. I'm really happy with my Borealis back pack which I got on sale on their web site a couple of weeks ago for about £52.00.

They have local retail stores so if there is one near you it might be a good idea to go and check them out. I just bought off the web site without seeing in person and took a risk as it was on sale but the bag turned out to be just right. It even has a compartment for an iPad or other similar size tablet.

Personally I would go with North Face over Tucano when it comes to bags. The North Face bags have a lot of pockets and compartments and are well made and designed. I take mine to work everyday now along with my laptop and/or my iPad.
