Yes, the cloth provides cushioning between the screen and the rest of the laptop body. You can get either. I opted for the Razer Kabuto because it is thicker than the Radtech, and would offer more cushion.

The CitySlicker from Waterfield Designs is a minimalistic messenger bag with a "briefcase" option.

Looking for a backpack, messenger put too much weight on shoulder.

I'm a frequent flyer, minimum 10 flights per month. Previously using 11" MBA but hotel sound system burned it when I was conducting a presentation. Probably MBA suits me more but I just can't resist high end stuffs.

Perhaps I worry too much, but I'd be concerned that long-term storage of a cloth between the keyboard and display might end up pushing the keys down, such that the keys stay partially pushed down (after the cloth is removed). Of course, if the cloth doesn't stay there for very long, there probably isn't an issue.

Try browsing ebags.com. There are tons of laptop backpacks there, ranging from the hideously ugly, to the budget-friendly, and to the very expensive leather/name-brand ones. (Hint: start looking at plain laptop backpacks, and not ones specifically for Macbooks.)

Posting to note that the Booq Vyper nylon case is a poor fit for the rMBP. My 13" was fairly snug with little movement, but the rMBP has a good 1/2" of room inside the foam of the case and bounces around a lot more than I'd like.

I think it's also due to the laptop being a lot thinner. It's just a poor fit overall and I'm returning mine. :(

Just got my northface surge backpack in today, and there is no way a brain cell is going to fit in the laptop compartment, even with the bottom cut out. Doesn't seem to have the width needed at the top. Now I have to decide between looking for another bag, or another hard sleeve that the rMBP fits in without banging around inside.

EDIT: Appears that the Surge 2 is actually significantly bigger with a larger laptop compartment, (18.5" x 13" x 1.5") VS. (15.25" x 10.5" x 2"). The braincell should actually fit just fine in a surge 2, so I guess I'm just going to return this bag for the surge 2.

Interesting - the keyboard never concerned me since the screen is more expensive, noticeable, and basically immediate. The rubber-domes will dry up by themselves anyways in 5+ years, so the keyboards are kinda screwed anyways in the long run.

Here's the bag I decided on. The Herschel Supply Little America (medium khaki).

While I understand how this could happen, I've never heard of this happening to any Macbook. Has this happened to you?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but apple laptop (and I believe desktop as well) keyboards use scissor gates and not rubber dome switches. While I've yet to receive my first apple machine, I can't speak from personal experience. But I would be very surprised to hear apple is using rubber dome switches on their laptops, as nearly all of their competitors are using scissor gates on their higher end machines. As for damaging scissor gate switches, as long as they are not being depressed with too much force you won't damage them. And since the keys are more or less flush with the palm rests, I don't think the keys would be depressed much if at all with a regular cloth screen protector. That razor mouse pad may be thick enough to depress the keys though.

I got the Incase Lineage sleeve for my rMBP, so far so good.

I think it is a matter of whether or not a common user would notice. Over time, the keys would become mushier and easier to depress. .

At some point, the rubber domes may dry out to the point of being brittle (so that the dome kinda snaps at the base and can no longer pop) - but would take much longer. Its happened to one of my keyboards before, but I don't think people really own/use a laptop long enough for THAT long.

They use a combination of both I believe. If you look, there is still a rubber dome 'contact' at the center of the scissor switch. I've never taken mine apart, but I imagine that rubber-dome contact provides assistance to the pop-up, as well as assist in providing a comfortable level of resistance.
I could be completely wrong though, and the rubber dome contact is simply an extremely mushy contact point.

Desktops can use a various number of switches - including Topre (rubber dome + mechanical), mechanical, scissor, etc. I have a fair keyboard collection and I am typing on a topre atm.

Has anyone got a water field retina sleeve yet? if so, could you please post the dimensions? I wanna know if it will fit inside my incase compact backpack's laptop sleeve. thanks.

This is very disappointing as I was going to get this case. I wonder when they'll properly update it for the rMBP...

Booq told me they were working as fast as possible to update for the rMBPs. Did not give me an ETA.

Ok its good to know they're working on something, thanks for the update. I guess it's a good thing my computer won't arrive for a while :p

How is the fit? Does it slide around inside at all?

I tried the Lineage sleeve at the Apple store and it didn't feel like a good match for the rMBP. It did slide around and was a very loose fit. I loved the looks of it though. Obviously this is a matter of opinion, but I wanted the tightest fit possible. Out of all the ones I tried, THIS was by far the best.
