Are hard cases and sleeves really worth it for the macbook pro?

I've recently purchased a macbook and I want to protect it but I've learnt with experience with iPhones that the hard clip on cases can damage the aluminium so I'm turned off by hard cases.

Sleeves and soft cases however I am open too. I want to provide good protection for something I've spent so much on so any advice and tips would be great.

Waterproof cases

Just got a notification that the new VIVAX waterproof/crushproof/acid proof cases are available. The freaking thing is roughly $200 USD. Yeah it's made from fancy materials from all over the world. Yeah it's interior dimensions are smaller than the Pelican version. But please.

In my opinion there is no reason to get this fancy case when you can just get the Pelican 1095cc (which I use) for $75USD on Amazon. There is also a smaller 1080 for 13" rMBP/MBA. Also, unlike the VIVAX case, the Pelican cases have pressure equalization valves — critical for getting your case back open after the pressurization/depressurization conditions of high elevation flights.

The nice thing about these crush-proof cases is that they are perfectly safe stowed on the floor of an airplane, bouncing around a dusty jeep, or affording crush proof protection inside your bike commuter bags.

Technical specs:
15" rMBP dimensions:
1.8 by 24.7 by 35.9 cm
VIVAX interior dimensions:
5 by 27.0 by 39.3 cm
Pelican 1095cc interior:
5.2 by 28.3 by 40.1 cm

Wow that VIVAX case looks insane. Super cool, but I do have to agree I don't see what makes it that much better than the Pelican.

My wife and I both have 15" Retina Macbook Pros and we both use Pelican cases for them. I have the Pelican 1095, the version with the pick & pluck foam. I fitted the foam perfectly for the size of the rMBP (length, depth, and height) and it fits amazingly. I have about 1" of foam around all surfaces along with the crush proof case, I feel very confident about the protection of my rMBP! I travel a lot for work, ride my bicycle, and motorcycle - in all situations I would never go anywhere without my rMPB in my Pelican case. Its been accidentally dropped with absolutely zero damage. I freaking love it. I tell my friends that it is my own personal AppleCare.

For my wife, I got her the Pelican 1085cc which is a little smaller and less bulky, because she wanted it to more easily fit inside her backpack, or just easier to carry around. The 1085cc is the version with the molded foam liner. The 15" rMPB fits perfectly in the bottom liner. There was some extra room in height in the case, so I ordered the extra foam to put in the top of the case to prevent it from moving up and down. While the 1085cc doesn't have quite as much extra foam around it as you do with the 1095, I still feel very confident about the safety of the rMPB.

Heres a good link with detailed photos of the 15" rMBP in the 1085cc:

Overall, I cannot recommend the Pelican cases enough. If you take your Macbook with you a lot, travel with it, bike, or anything...the Pelican case is the way to go. It does add bulk and weight for carrying around, but I am totally willing to deal with the extra bulk and weight for the benefits and protection. I've had my Macbook in the Pelican for 2 years now and it looks brand new, even after dozens of plane flights, motorcycle and bike rides, several drops. I'd be happy to send pictures of the fit of the cases if anyone would like to.

B&H has the best prices on these cases I've found. Only about $65!

Hi, glad you are enjoying your Pelican case as well. On a technical note, do be aware that the case is more your own version of accident insurance, not Applecare. Applecare guards against manufacturing defects, Pelican guards against the external world ;).
I use mine for international flights, bike commuting, and field work in the tropics and temperate mountains. Can't say I mind the bulk for the piece of mind.
Cheers

So I have been dragging guitars around for about 10 years and for the last 6 or so I have been using Gig Bags from a company called Mono. I also have a laptop bag for my old 17 MBP which fit everything but the kitchen sink
http://monocreators.com/the-producer-grey/

Here the other day I picked up a new 15inch MBP with the intentions of using it as a software style amp rig for my guitars and other things as the 17 was EXTREMELY long in the tooth and has now become one of my daughters machines..:D (she is ECSTATIC!!). Anyhow I am taking a much more minimalistic approach this time and am thinking about grabbing another Mono Case as they have proven pretty much indestructable for me over the years...although they arent very popular outside the music industry I figured I would post it up for you guys to see...

Has anyone had any luck with this knomo fargo backback?
http://www.zappos.com/knomo-london-fargo-laptop-backpack

The main things I wanted to know were:

1) If anyone has had luck fitting a 15''rMBP. I know it say it fits 14'', but the dimmensions seem a little bigger and I just wanted to know if it's possible. I wouldn't mind if it peeked out from the sleeve, i just need to know if it will close the bag.

2)Do you think I could fit a couple of paper notebooks in there along with the computer? or maybe a text book?

3) Do you know of any other backpacks with this kind of material/design? Like something sleek and water resistant?

Thanks!

Tech 21 case

I've been enjoying this case about a month in.

I feel like it adds quality protection, looks great, and doesn't get in the way.

I have the black case, but it's out of stock right now. Clear, purple and pink currently in stock.

Saddleback Air sleeve for rMPB

I just opened my package from Saddleback. I have a 13" Air sleeve for my wife's air and figured I'd try my 13" rMPB in it to see how it fit. It fit perfectly, nice and snug, so I ordered another for my Pro.

I made this decision based on the reviews of the Pro sleeves they carry. A few stated that the fit wasn't very snug on the new rMPB. While I'd rather had the sleeve oriented to drop the computer in from the top rather than slide in from the side, ultimately I prioritized fit over orientation. This thing is snug, I can hold it upside down and the computer doesn't fall out. Once it's had a couple days to stretch and form to the laptop I think it will be perfect!

I got the Tobacco color, it's beautiful.

Just upgraded from 2012 15" cMBP to a 15" Late 2013 rMBP.

I have a nice Waterfield Sleeve I got as gift for my birthday last year, but it's definitely a little loose since it was made for the cMBP. I would just get a new sleeve altogether, but the sleeve I have now was a gift, so I want still use it. I need a REALLY thin sleeve that would make my rMBP more snug. Or, do you guys think I would be okay with it being a bit loose?

Sorry I don't know this particular bag, but can vouch for Knomo bags in generally. Had a few and always very well made, with nice materials and tend to look as good as the pictures. Also if you lose your bag and are lucky enough for someone honest to find it, knomo will reunite you :)

Incase finally announced new sleeves specifically fit for the rMBP! I have held off on using a case for my laptop since I bought it last year (thankfully no scratches/dents/marks of any kind), but I'm about to jump on one of these new ICON sleeves with "TENSAERLITE" technology...

Anyone know more about them? It looks like they're a lot lighter and more compact than the normal Neoprene sleeves offered in the past.

Guys, in the next days i'm going to buy a new 15" rMBP and i need a sleeve too!

I really like the ones Joli Originals and Picaso Lab sell; but since they're almost identical, which one do you reccomend?

I read some people had shipping problem with the guy of Picaso Lab; is this a recurrent thing?

Can someone give me an advise?

Thank you :)
