Here is a trick I use. I keep a small flashlight at my work bench. Hold it behind the display resting against the apple logo. That lights up a bright circle in the middle of the screen. Then, when booting, if the apple boot logo shows up it is clear as day. Easy to do and avoids the glare from trying to shine a light directly on the screen.

Thanks for the help Guys, I do not want to use the broken display to test the operation for fear of doing more damage, so going to hook up to mini display adapter first.....

A1278 2010 just turn on with battery

Hi guys,

good Job here. Ive been following this Forum for a Long time. Now i have a problem. My Mac A1278 Mid 2010 does not turn on with Magsafe AC Adapter. When i connect the magsafe, the green LED turns on, but it does not Charge the battery. So the green light does not switch to orange. When i connect a charged battery, it turns on normaly. So it turns on with Battery.

What ive already done:

- Changed the 6259AHRTZ chip
- Changed the DC-In Board
- Changed the Magsafe
- Changed the Battery
- Start with the minimum settings (no Keyboard, no Camera, no Touchpad..)

same Problem. I dont know what the problem is. The Board is clean. No liquid to see. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Regards from Germany

Have a look in Dadioh's SMC thread as this is where there is info on the power circuits. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1122338/

Check this thread. I seem to recall some comments about the brightness with a picture like yours somewhere before page 35.

Lost components A1278 Late 2011

2ij299j.jpg

I got an A1278 late 2011 with liquid spilled onto the lvds connector on logic board.First owner of the mac tried to take out the connector with hot air and at this time he also took out some components on logic board. In the picture i drawn a red circle of the lost components on logic board.Does anybody has any idea whic are these components?I guess the light browns are fuse and blacks are capacitor but i am not sure.Any help please.

Good Tip. Much easier to see this way.

Best way to get the info is with the pdf schematic and brd boardview file. Figure out which motherboard you have 820-xxxx-x then do some searching on the internet for them. Once you have these, you can use th boardview program to locate the specific SMD parts and the PDF to understand their specifications.

Thanks for your answer.I found the parts and their name.L9008,L9004,C9010 and C9015.These parts are missing.I checked them on digikey and i was unable to find L9004.The rest i found and they are capacitors.I guess the soldering direction for capacitors are important. How can i know the soldering directions of these components?

As Barney stated, these are bi-polar caps and the direction of mounting is not important.

You do know you are not searching for a C9010 on Digikey, you are searching the spec from the data sheet correct? example may be C9010 on data sheet = Cap Ceramic 0.001uF 10% 50V in 0402 package.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Further in this thread you will read that this part is a high frequency capacitor. IT IS NOT A FUSE!!! PLEASE do not go about replacing this part with anything other than a capacitor. READ CAREFULLY the whole thread before messing around with component substitutions.

I obtained a Macbook Pro 13 unibody with non functioning display (everything else works). I took it apart ad discovered that the LVDS cable end was completely destroyed. I ordered a replacement display assembly (complete with LVDS cable). I now have an image but no backlight.

Upon close examination of the components surrounding the LVDS connector I notice I have a component missing compared to a detailed photo of the same motherboard that I found on the net. I am not sure if this component might be a fuse that has been removed. I am trying to find someone who has one of these logic boards accessable that can identify what this part is supposed to be.

Update: There are many many more tips and info in this thread to help you with troubleshooting backlight issues on Macbook Unibody.

In particular the WLED driver should be checked for failure. A useful method is to test the resistance (impedance) from each pin of the WLED driver device to ground. Typical values are shown below.

Make sure power is removed from board before testing resistance. Unplug battery or battery connector.

Macbook Pro 13"
Device LP8543 Pin 1 is lower left and counts counter clockwise around the device.

If your WLED driver is blown you may measure zero or low resistance on some of the pins that are not supposed to be ground.

Does someone have the resistance measurements from a LP8545 WLED? I have a Late 2009 without backlight or screen support.

Hi guys, I got this mbp 13 inch, no backlight sometimes. I unplugged the battery and that seems to help keep it on, fuses check out good, when power cycling it will stay off, any ideas?

EDIT: ok, guys, took it apart and removed all power, for 30 min, did a few resets, and everything seems to be good now, thanks

HI again guys, this mac has worked good since I first posted this, and the I was sitting at timhortons today and using it, went to the washroom and came back and black screen, won't come on, computer did not move...(just when I needed it the most), took it home and opened it up unplugged the battery, and bang, back to normal, FUNNY. Anybody have this before, anybody know how to fix this..?:apple:

It's not clear to me what your problem is. I can interpret these ways

you left the computer and came back to find:

1) Computer was running without backlight
2) Computer was running without backlight or video image
3) Computer went to sleep (front small led status?) but would not awake
4) Computer went to sleep and woke up without backlight
5) Computer went to sleep and woke up without backlight or video support
6) Computer shutdown and would not start
7) Computer shutdown and started but without backlight
8) Computer shutdown and started but without backlight and video image

Can you clarify more?

Since removing the battery changed the situation, I suspect you have a SMC issue, not a backlight issue.

i would say it is number 4, still having problems, I am typing with it now, if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it will turn on. It is ether off or on, on flashing or funny lights, the dimming works, also the keyboard back light works...

Edit: this seems more like a software issue, running Mavrics, a battery disconnect will let the back light come on but it will not last, a pram reset will make it last a bit... just my findings..

Is it possible there is a temperature dependency? The backlight needs to be told to turn on via the enable pin on the WLED dirver. If there is a cold solder joint in this circuit or the SMC decides not to turn it on you get no backlight.

This is defiantly a software issue, I did some searching and found it has something to do with wireless, I didn't find a fix yet....

Actually, the screen support is there, but no backlight. I measured enable pin and I get no 3v, so I guess I will start to trace this back.

update: HI, guys, this is driving me mad, laptop will work good till it decides to switch of the backlight, from sleep mode or shutdown, and nothing I do will switch it back on till I remove all power, battery and magsafe...to me this seems like a software conflict, but it happens too randomly, I figure it can't possibly be a hardware if it comes back on as soon as I remove battery. laptop is a 2009 macbook pro, thanks for the help...

I think this is an issue with the SMC since the backlight functions until the mac goes to sleep or shuts down. Then, when it starts back up, there is no backlight.

You need to be checking what voltages are present at the WLED driver when this error mode is occurring.

Re: MacBook Pro won't wake from sleep with Bluetooth Keyboard or Magic Trackpad
Oct 19, 2012 1:04 PM (in response to Michael Napier)

I've been dealing with this for almost a year...well after digging into forum after forum...I did find...

If you have aftermarket memory, this is the issue...so i luckily kept my OEM RAM, put it back in and voila!!! It wakes up from sleep...dont understand why...but yes the aftermarket ram worked find...tested fine, but the mackbook did not like going to sleep with this in it.

So now i have to find out why aftermarket memory doesnt work...

so going to switch out mem , maybe this will work, if not then I will check voltage...
EDIT: took out 4g hynix and installed Samsung, so far so good, up till now I was scared to put into sleep mode, now over 40 sleep cycles and no hangup...keeping fingers crossed..

ok guys, changing the memory did not help, I tryed to connect a mini display wire to hdmi...and external display will only show the desktop pic. even when working in safari on laptop, external display will only show the desktop..thinking of doing a total reflow on this motherboard...

Check the soldered joint on the component marked "N" or "Z", it doesn't look as though it is soldered properly on the side nearest the 6 pin chip.

the z thing is the fuse I replaced with my big a## solder iron looks like the resister next to the chip is fried, I need a micro scope, any ideas..also need a good solder station, thanks for the help..

I'd also check that the solder hasn't bridged the pads for the fuse. It might be a case that it has bridged and the fuse would have blown rather than burning out the resistor.

does anybody want to fix this for me, I just do not have the right tools right now..

EDIT: this works ok on external display, also noticed keyboard backlight is not working..

By the way, It looks like I finally fixed my 13 mbp with the backlight problem, there was corrosion buildup near the white cap at the battery connector, effecting a dime size around it and some nearby components. Fixed last night, still keeping fingers crossed. has not happened after fix.
