what exact command did you use to search for that? I did:

grep -r "031-68146" *

but it didn't find anything other than the binary files I posted above...

*EDIT* I can confirm the directory structure isn't random, and I have:

/private/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068/C/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.SUCatalogDataManager/r

except I am missing 031-68146

Probably the hardest. The folders are locked, so I had to give permission for each one until find the correct one (with update files).

Well... it not worked yet. When I clicked to update and restart, it shows a message telling "the updates have changed" and goes back to the App Store. But we're close.

Are you on DP? This folder don't appear on any of my Macs on the Developer's Preview.

I have deleted the update files from /Library/Updates/ that I had downloaded manually and downloaded the PB2 again from the App Store. Now seems it is installing...

How did you install the beta initially? My issue is that I never had the /private/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068/C/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.SUCatalogDataManager/r/031-68146

so I manually created it with the files and ensured my board ID was in the dist file.

Unfortunately it won't show up in the app store. Given I had to manually even create the directory in the first place, I am wondering what I have done differently to this point to you.

I installed my beta using these instructions:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-3-1-installation-guide-for-sierra.1978005/

For those of you (everyone, pretty much) having issues with App Store System Updates, I think the best solution at this time is to just wait for the final release, and install these incremental updates (Public Beta 2, etc) manually by downloading and installing the PKG file from Apple (if it's even available). Once the final release has come, I'll begin working on figuring out a method for reliable system updates, if it ends up not working out-of-the-box.
Here here! I was an early adopter of your patch and thank you infinitely for reviving my pro 3,1 workhorse ( my 8 core monster serving as a build server for beta testing huge projects) but there comes a point (at least for me) where running Sierra through its paces is more important than keeping up with the onslaught of patches and updates from Apple. Especially since they are now treating developers as second class citizens: just give us the darn images from a website and let us decide whether our machines are up to snuff! Ridiculous. You should harden your tool for the final product without the unnecessary pressure of catering to our woes, there is plenty of info on this site already for most of us to tailor our solutions for our particular needs. Good luck and am looking forward to the final product. Thanks again ...

Yeah... The folder already exists on my Mac, I don't needed to create it. I had installed Sierra Public Beta using the tool that everyone's here is using. I've tried to download the update manually and it doesn't works. So, I have modified the files that I mentioned and... that's it.
[doublepost=1469076687][/doublepost]Well, the system has booted up, but I'm stuck on the login screen without keyboard and trackpad, as expected. I will try to use the patch now.
[doublepost=1469078231][/doublepost]Guess what? The actual patch works like a charm on Sierra PB2! Everything is working fine.

filipe.esposito,

What do you get when you run.

sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate

EDIT:

Interesting. After making the changes you had suggested in post #1422, things didn't show up for me.

However, after running "sudo softwareupdate --list", I now see the Beta 2 as available for install. It's late here so I won't try actually updating until tomorrow.

For whomever that is writing/updating the patcher tool, it looks like the dist files are full of various checks. I think it is highly likely you could replace it with a file that just returns true for all the top level functions. See http://pastebin.com/tDn2DrWH

Yeah, this path is not random, on mine for DP3 is "/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068/C/softwareupdat~Update.SUCatalogDataManager/k/031-68147/031-68147.English.dist" (previously i presumed it's random, thats why i not wrote it before). SU create folders like 031-68147 when run the update check, and when this file and folders already exists not checking it's integrity.

Patching sysctl to always report a compatible mac is risky, because SU try to install updates that only for specific hardware (example: firmware updates) and we need to repatch the sysctl binary after all system upgrade.

I made a patched update catalog and distribution file, but i can't load it to softwareupdate. Both over http and https throwing Code 101. Anyone has any idea why? The base URL is http://homokozo.czo.hu/osxupdate/ or https://homokozo.czo.hu/osxupdate/. Maybe SU checking the server certificate?

Hey Czo. Is your trackpad capable of multitouch gestures? I think your model was one of the few older style trackpads with multitouch capability. That might explain why your's works out of the box.
Can you print the output of "kextstat" from the terminal here to see which trackpad kext is being used?

Cheers

Here is the kextstat on my MBP41 with DP3: http://homokozo.czo.hu/dp3-kexsts.txt

Someone recheck this on dp3 please
All files that exists in previous versions are here.

I read all posts but I don´t understand how update my macbook late 2008 5.1 PB1 16A238m to PB2 16A254g with Mac Store without install all other time.

What can I do¿?¿

I don't know if I can post the link here, but you can find it searching for "mac OS Sierra CatalogURL". The update is composed with four pkg files that you can find inside CatalogURL. Sadly, I didn't found any way to install them outside App Store, since the system apparently blocks the manually installation.
[doublepost=1469062947][/doublepost]Just for curiosity, Apple updates the full package installer with the new compilations? Or they're still on the first beta? Maybe it's possible to update "reinstalling" every time using the tool...

@filipe.esposito
Is it possible to pm me with the link of PB2?, thanks!

Well, at the end, I had to re-download again from the App Store when the update appears. But I've sent the .pkg links for you guys.

Is the update mechanism still not working well for unsupported Macs?

I've been holding out on trying this on my 09 MBP since I figure it's best to wait if it's going to be a headache each beta release.

@filipe.esposito I have read your posts in the forum but I must have done something wrong since I'm not seeing any updates. I'm on PB 1 now (patched with @dosdude1 patcher) and I've downloaded the 4 PB 2 files and run them but I'm not sure if it's even necessary?

Secondly I've edited the file in "/private/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n00000s0000068/C/softwareupdated/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.SUCatalogDataManager/r/031-68146"

Here I deleted my model "MacbookPro5.1" and added my board ID "Mac-F42D86A9".

Do I need to do something else? Move the 4 files to a folder or?

@dosdude1, thanks for the work you have done. I installed and ran without issue DP1 and DP2 because your work made it possible. I have since gone back to El Capitan because I don't have the time to sort through the update process on a regular basis and on my older machine don't get all of the features anyhow. I do however look forward to the final release and possibly a patch that I can use to install again. I will wait until then and try once more.

I can't tell if the fact that I've tried to install the .pkg has influenced in something.
[doublepost=1469119718][/doublepost]Before everything, I've moved the .pkg files for /Library/Updates/031-68146 and had modified the index.plist manually. After change the /var/folders/ files, App Store has recognized the files but they were not installed anyway. Then, I had deleted the .pkg files and App Store started the download again, and then the update works.
[doublepost=1469119882][/doublepost]I will try to do a clean install soon, and then update again to understand exactly what did the update works.
