hey all, my first post. MacBook late 2008 unibody 5,1. I've settled on Mojave, I just like it better. anyway, i tried the apfs rom patcher, picked the correct chip # (I thought, took it off of chip on logic board), and patched. All seemed to go good and I continued using after rom flash. then when I had to reboot, all I get are the s.o.s. beeps. I'm guessing it hosed the logic board even though I triple checked the chip #. Am I SOL?

Join the club! Bricked a Mini3,1 with the dreaded APFS ROM Patcher by being impatient, killing the Patcher after 43 minutes S/B 45 minutes, at least, btw. There are a plethora of MCP79 variations in EEPROM to sort out, apparently. Pulled the HDD from the "SOS" Mini and noticed files written by the Patcher - so, completion may have been near?

APFS ROM Patcher and MCP79, nope. Too much risk per dosdude1.

Now, read about those who got it to work. ?

Macbook5,1 thermal issues can be relieved to some extent by removing the CD player and replacing with OWC "Data Doubler" and SSD???

Yes, I removed the optical drive and faulty right speaker and keep the space unoccupied for a better airflow. My MacBook5,1 runs at 50-55oC which is still not as good as my MacBookPro7,1 with a faster CPU in a clamshell mode with an external full HD TV.

I am sure you understand though that I am just nitpicking on engineering designs here, most people would not even notice or care about their machine running 10-15oC hotter.

I'm so glad you all mentioned this, I was getting ready to patch my 5,1. Whew! Saved by my teeth. THANK YOU!

FYI: BlockBlock

I'm guessing that most of you already know about this -- I've been using it for a while, even before running the Mojave Patcher--but I've come to realize that, since the Patcher needs to run with SIP disabled, BlockBlock, by Patrick Wardle, is indispensable for preventing anything from being installed persistently, which with SIP disabled can be a concern. (Note: it's presented as being a beta, but I've yet to come across any serious bug or problem. It's been out as a beta for several years now, so not holding my breath for an update.)

Was considering going the re-paste w/ Arctic Silver route but getting the mobo free to access the CPU heatsink without breaking stuff is a PITA Royale?

All of the Objective-See apps run great on Mojave and Catalina - Lulu and KnockKnock are also helpful. Good stuff. ?

I re-pasted my MacBook5,1 with an Arctic Silver but it still can't compete with my MacBookPro7,1(still running with its original thermal paste). You can try to sugarcoat a bad design but it will still remain a bad design.

QuickLook HD video content from Finder is choppy on MBP6,2... Can anyone confirm and any solution...?

Apparently the process VTDecoderXPCService has been an issue for some time(~7 years) even on a supported machines. It usually pops up during HD playback, but from what I have found it does not have to. I usually just restart a machine and enjoy QuickLook HD video content with very low CPU utilisation.
I am assuming you are using the latest patcher and have hardware decoding working on your machine.

Patcher is latest, but how do I enable hardware decoding..?

You should be all set with the latest legacy video card patch applied. I suggest to keep an eye on that process, as it can take up to 60-70% of the CPU and our vintage machines don't have that much power to go around. Unfortunately, restarting the machine is the only way to get rid of that process that I know of.
Mavericks does not have this issue but I guess we can't have it all.

How much of an improvement did that re-paste yield? Roger-that on the poor thermal design but making the battery and drive access convenient almost makes up for the unwanted heat. For what it is worth this '08 MacBook5,1 has put on some mileage mostly to tropical areas (Brazil, Arruba, and Mexico or the desert SouthWest, the Mojave) is a few months shy of 12 years-old and has NEVER failed for any reason. This 2Ghz. MacBook runs no hotter on Mojave than it did on El Capitan.

I did not actually measure any before and after temperatures but it was a good idea to do it as the original paste all but dried up. Don't expect any miracles though as my 10-year old MacBookPro7,1 still runs very cool with its original paste. Mojave is absolutely fine and has nothing to do with it.

Is your hdd/ssd formatted correctly as well as your usb as to start the usb has to be formatted extended-journaled before making a patcher and has to be at least 16gb

Yeah i have 16 gb usb and formatted extended journal , my ssd is installed mac os x 10.7 software should i formatted it so it can progress to installation screen?

Your macOS might be to old to correctly make a Mojave Patcher I would try and update to at least El Catain thin I think you go go to Mojave but I am not to sure as I have a mid 2009 iMac and MacBook and they both came with El Captain installed

I believe you must update to Sierra first then High Sierra for the firmware update, then Mojave, if I remember what I was instructed to do with my 9,1 iMac running El Cap 11.6. Step by step...
