As I continue to troubleshoot errors with editing on the Photos app , I am considering uninstalling some of the patches to see if the problems might resolve. To that end, I had a few questions for the experts on here. Please pardon my ignorance in these matters:
  • Is there a convenient way to experiment with uninstalling and reinstalling patches (to avoid reinstalling the entire OS each time)?
  • The Legacy Video Card patch seems like an obvious contender that might possibly affect Photos. Is that accurate?
  • Are there any other patches that might interfere with Photos? (My machines are MM 3,1, MBP 5,5 and MBA 4,2, and I usually install just the default recommended patches).
  • Is it possible that the Photos errors could be related to Mojave requiring Metal and assuming the machine running Mojave has Metal?
Thank you in advance for your help!

If you have to ask these questions you are better off getting a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. They are not that expensive.

Quick Question: If I want to install Mojave on a MBP 5,4 2009, do I need to first use the firmware update package under another OS installation, such as El Cap or do I use the APFS rom patcher? I am confused. I tried Mojave using the patcher with a new ssd and I get the prohibited sign upon reboot (and this is after running the post boot patcher twice).

Did you check "force cache rebuild" after running the patches?

Yes I almost have El Cap on it. I am beginning to wonder if the data cable is craping out on me. Either way my goal is to put Mojave on it. I was just wondering if I use the firmware update or the rom patcher or both?

I am very sorry if I ask the already answered question, but I have no possibility to search all the thread...

So: is there any solution about MBP 2011 (with soft-disabled Radeon GPU) and sleep mode?

thanks in advance!

2 things...

1) Somehow my 2011 mini lost video acceleration. Creating a new patcher USB with a new download of Mojave (more about that next) and the new patcher fixed it. When I checked installed patches, the legacy video patch was not listed. After booting from the Patcher USB and re-adding the patches, it appears to be working fine again.

2) The Mojave download from within the patcher is incredibly slow... If you can download it from Apple, do it. Its MUCH faster.

Yes the 2011 15" MacBook Pro works just fine with the NVRAM disabled AMD GPU and Mojave 10.14, including sleep, wake from sleep, and extremely low GPU diode temperatures. It's quite a process, but it's outlined in the thread here :

This is exactly what I have running here, and I just upgraded from HS to dosdude's Mojave, and it's working great!

I updated to Mojave to run Logic Pro X 10.5, which mostly works, however there are a couple of places where Logic is using Metal to render some controls, and in these cases, Logic crashes as it expects Metal to be there when it isn't. Is there anything that can be done about this..?

This may not be library compatible but it's a non-metal previous version. https://updates.cdn-apple.com/2019/...-40f9-86c6-cfed8e591758/iPhoto9.4.3Update.dmg

Yes it is true. The machine is still very selective when it decides to chime(obviously it never chimes when the Volume is Mute). Even when unmuted the chime does not seem to be guaranteed. For example, I started machine by pressing the power button - no chime, shut down the machine, pressed the Option to get into boot menu, pressed power button - got chime. Truly has a mind of it's own unless I am still missing something.

Finally I bought a second hand right speaker/subwoofer from the 13inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro to replace the faulty one in my MacBook5,1. I am glad that it fits and works well, my MacBook sounds and chimes great again.

Funny you should mention that. I have a Mid-2009 MBP with a subwoofer that is shot, and have been looking in vain for a replacement subwoofer. Good to know that I can expand my search to other models.

Yes, I wasn't sure myself about the compatibility but it seems that 13inch Late 2008 MacBook, Mid 2009 MBP, Mid 2010 MBP have identical right speaker/subwoofer. Not sure about the 15inch models but it is possible that they are identical too.

Sorry for the lazy question here but am considering purchasing an RX580 GPU for use in my MacPro 3.1, which is currently running Mojave 10.14.6. I understand that there was issues with these cards in Mojave/Catalina but that they were fixed - just wanting to make sure that this is actually the case, and see if anyone's had success/drawbacks with using that card in their 3,1?

Thanks for any answers in advance!

I just installed Mojave 10.14.6 on my MacBook Pro 6,2 and everything seems to be working. The only issue I'm having is choppy video playback of higher fps MOV files. If I use spacebar to Quickview, open in QuickTime or load it into FCPX I have the same choppy playback. The same video, however, plays fine in VLC. If I use something like HandBrake to convert the video to H265 that completely eliminates the problem. This didn't happen with High Sierra and I'm hoping someone here can help me.

UPDATE: I have another issue. Apps like Sketch that I need for work don't work any longer as it says that it requires a metal supported mac to run on Mojave. So it looks like I need to go back to High Sierra. I have a time machine backup but there's no recovery mode so can someone tell me how I can revert?

The traditional solution is just to use the older version of the app, that does not require Metal. Going back all the way to High Sierra is a bit of an overkill if you ask me. I believe that Mojave had a very similar(to High Sierra) Open GL support up to the 10.14.3 and in fact this is what allowing us to enjoy Mojave relatively trouble free on our unsupported Macs.

Well, I haven't had any real issues with High Sierra and it runs quite smooth. The only reason I wanted to update was to be able to run the latest version of certain applications like Sketch, FCPX, Logic etc... And none of these can run without 10.14.4 or newer. I was also having the video lag issue and everything felt slow tbh. Just reverted so I think I'll be sticking with this for now.

What is the situation with applying the 2020-002 security update on patched Mojave 10.14.6 (18G1012)? I downloaded the installer (1,624,387,618 bytes) but when I try to run it, I get an error message 'This software is not supported on your system'. I was trying to avoid using the Software Update panel as you don't have access to the Installer Log window. My assumption is that, if the downloadable copy of the Security Update checks for supported machines, the copy that the Software Update panel downloads should do the same, no?

Hi @jhowarth
In order to install SecUpd2020-002Mojave, you must expand the .pkg file and then modify the "distribution" file.
Like this:
Move "SecUpd2020-002Mojave.pkg" file to the desktop
Open Terminal and writes this:
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
Press enter
Code:
pkgutil --expand SecUpd2020-002Mojave.pkg NewFolder
Press enter

Wait a few minutes
Go to the "NewFolder" folder created on your desktop and open the "Distribution" file with a text editor

Add: return true;
at the end of this line: function InstallationCheck(prefix) {

Like this: function InstallationCheck(prefix) {return true;

Add: return true;
at the end of this line: function VolumeCheck(prefix) {

Like this: function VolumeCheck(prefix) {return true;

Save the file

If you have not closed the terminal, write or simply copy this:
Code:
pkgutil --flatten NewFolder SecUpd2020-002MojaveModified.pkg
Press enter and wait a few minutes for the package to re-create

But if you closed the terminal, re-open it and writes this:
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
Press enter
Code:
pkgutil --flatten NewFolder SecUpd2020-002MojaveModified.pkg
Press enter and wait a few minutes for the package to re-create

Once the operation is completed, launch the file "SecUpd2020-002MojaveModified.pkg" The message "This software is not supported on your system" should no longer appear and the update should install.

AFTER INSTALLATION YOU MUST RESTART ON THE USB KEY AND RE-APPLY THE POST-INSTALL PATCH WITH CACHE REBUILD OTHERWISE MOJAVE WILL NOT START

Be careful if you have several OS on more disks/partitions in your mac because these modifications make it possible to install this update on any OS disk/partition.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INSTALLATION BE CAREFUL TO CHOOSE THE DISK/PARTITION OF MOJAVE AND NO OTHER.
