I don't know why my mac rebooted to do the update, because I don't have auto update enabled. Is there a method to disable this auto rebooting?
As I previously wrote, the latest security updates do restart even more than one time.
I personally watch every update, just in case of any issues and you cannot avoid that, alas.
Glad you are back in charge of your computer

Yes, I will watch next time. But I mean I didn't actually want to start the update. It was downloading it on automatically, but I don't even have auto update enabled. And then I went to go eat and noticed a black screen, so I pushed the space bar because I tought it was sleeping. When that didn't work I pushed (I didn't hold it down) the power button and that turned off the computer. (I think that is where it went wrong)

So, my question is: How do I prevent my computer from restarting to install the update in the future? Or was this a one time thing? A bug or error or something like that?

I really apreciate the help I got form this forum, thanks.

Automatically keep my Mac up to date is not checked as I guess for you as well

Have you checked the Advanced.. button in Software Update?
softwareupdate.jpg
As you can see I keep only those active and the system data files and security updates
are not the big ones that created the mess for you. Usually are small fixes and do not ever require restarts

I have nothing selected in the advanced tab, so I think it should never happen again. Just to be sure i'll keep everything unchecked. Thanks for all the help.

You are welcome
I would check only "Check for updates"
I think it would be better to know that something is available , then you can decide what you prefer to do

Running latest version of Mojave with security updates on a 27" iMac mid-2011 with a K2100m flashed with Nicks vbios and using the newest opencore bootloader everything is good except: 1. on opening the Desktop & Screensaver sys pref, it pauses for about 5 seconds with a beachball and then comes live; 2. If it goes to sleep or is put to sleep, coming out of sleep by pressing a key is very sluggish.
Has anyone got solutions for this?

dosdude1. Hi Colin, is there any chance you could revisit the Mojave patcher and add the function for patching Sleep that affects 2011 iMacs? HighVoltage24 posted the manual how to and files, but having it incorporated in the Mojave (and Catalina) patchers would be really convenient (but a lot of work for you perhaps).

I got sleep working following highvoltage24's (thank you) how to and it now sleeps and wakes properly. My only small quibble is that the non-Apple wired USB generic mouse is slow (takes 4 or 5 seconds sometimes) to re-appear on the desktop. This is when booting from a fast SSD and I don't think it is the RAM sleep state.
Are there any known tweaks?

They're fine. The only reason I want to mess with it is that I fear for High Sierra not getting security patch support after this fall. And I know they do too. Trust me, I'd rather not try to hack on a macOS release for family members if I don't have to. This is to tide them over until they can buy an ARM Mac so that they're at least on that side of the transition and that much more likely to have their Macs last that much longer before they are next having to buy a new Mac.
Oh, boy I wouldn't touch an ARM Mac even if it came as a present, at no cost. Why would one be interested in a bigger sized jail, than the iPhone? Apple is very close to experiencing their downfall. Intel has not said their last word yet and believe me it will come strong.
Windows 10 at 20H2 is vastly superior than "Big/Small Sur", reliable fast, a joy to use. On a MacBook Pro 2010 (with a fixed cap element) and drivers from 2011, I am running specialty Astrology software from the Windows 95 era, 32/16 bit. The system is 64bit and is running next to that app the latest 64bit software for Windows. As I mentioned earlier, no patching needed, yet ZOOM is rock solid on those old drivers. Current Windows simply put is running circles around any macos version. And all that talk comes from an ex fateful mac fan. It is a matter of 2 years at most (with the changes still to come) for people to realize what a joke Apple has become. Today I wouldn't switch from Windows 10 and Android, even if Steve came begging from the grave for mercy.

I had the same problem on a 2009 iMac w/Mojave. I had to go back to a September or November 2019 Zoom App build version to fix. I have not upgraded Zoom since, and it continues to work correctly. (Just had two company conferences today and everything was great). I think Zoom changed something after Sept or Nov 2019 that makes it not work on unsupported Macs...which makes me think it has something to do with Metal support.

I also had a similar issue with Remotix and VNC connections (RDP worked fine). I just gave up trying to get Remotix to work, and use the MacOS native app for VNC. (And MS RDP for RDP).
Good afternoon:
Could you please explain in detail how I go about doing this. I only need the Zoom fix. I'm new to Mac, just bought this machine. Many thanx

Yes, I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make weekly clone backups of my boot drives. It works fine on both Mojave and Catalina.

I have been replacing hard drives and use CCC to "clone" the current install to the new drive. Unlike its earlier versions, which I have used since the day it came out, it no longer "clones" completely. I miss the days of two option buttons that get you a One-to-One Block Clone. Or the Devs are using topology of the move to get in the way that has caused me major headaches with MS and Adobe software and Activations. But I bought it lock, stock and barrel. Loved the idea of setting up multiple operations to fire off consequetively. Except the volumes would not boot. I had to rerun the last installer over the top of the "clone" to get it to work. So those weekly "Clone Backups" may not boot . . .

So on a MacBook Pro 4,1 have had great success with the DosDude effort for Mojave but of late, there's this issue where the screen will suddenly go black. Previously, a tap on the keys would bring it back but now, that touch of the space bar or another key will just stop everything and go to a restart.

I've run Onyx recently which is great and smoothed things out. Thought maybe that stopped the sudden "black screen of death & restart" but no.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Energy settings in Systems Preferences are set at default so that's not the cause. The black screen just randomly happens and then you can't escape the restart when you touch the keyboard.

I have an Nvidia Quadro card in my 3,1 which is currently running Sierra.

Can I install Mojave if I switch to an AMD card? If so, is there a limit to which AMD card I can use?

I'm asking because I read at Reddit (which refers to this thread) that the lack of SSE4.2 instruction set (whatever that is) means that the newest AMD cards won't work.

There is an SSE4.2 emulator (doesn't emulate all of SSE4.2) so you can use AMD cards like the RX 580 or later.
If it's not part of the Dosdude Mojave patcher (it might be?), then you can install it manually.
Catalina patcher definitively has it.

They don't have boot screen but there's a patched rEFInd EFI boot loader for that.
I think latest option for that is at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/refind-opencore-chainloader.2231693/
Older option is: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...creen-without-flashing.2204882/?post=27859604

Thank you very much Joe, really helpful info.

If I don't use that emulator, which is the best/most recent AMD card that I can use on a 3,1?

EDIT: It seems the AMD WX5100 is similar to my Quadro M4000, but I'm not sure if it will work on a 3,1.

I currently don't have boot screen either (but keep an old EFI card around just in case) so that is not a requirement for me.

DosDude Patcher comes with the emulator ... you should not deactivate it. You will then be able to use up to an RX580 or possibly newer subject to power draw requirements. This is what you get by default with DosDude unless you specifically cripple it.

The SSE4.2 Emulator that comes with DosDude (13 Nov 19) has since been updated (22 May 20) but he hasn't yet updated on his side.

You can get this newer one from the link given in Joevt's post and update after installation.

There is a thread about GPU compatibility.
I don't know why the options for the MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 aren't also listed under MacPro3,1 in the "What to choose?" section. I think it might be because the older Macs don't run the newer OSs that require SSE4.2 for AMD cards (even the old AMD cards).

This old info for my iMac 11,1 (Late 2009) and Zoom. Previously, I had an old copy of Zoom, and just uninstalled the new updated version and reinstalled the old version.

That being said, (and I haven't kept track of either dosdude1 patch updates or really zoom updates...), I've running the latest version of Zoom on my iMac 11,1 without issue. I'm still running latest Mojave with dosdude1 patches. This includes the latest Apple Mojave Security update from August 2020....which I then reapplied the Dosdude1 patches from my USB installer disk. No problem running latest Zoom here now...

one of our 2011 GTX765M upgraded iMac's, with patched mojave install is getting firmware error messages these days.
I dont know why, since I have got kepler vbios beta 3 running from Nick, and the firmware on the eeprom of the logic board is back to the stock latest version.

Used the vbios and info for our imac's from this thread :

I thought these firmware error messages would only appear if your bootrom has been modded.. ?
Guess perhaps apple changed something, or I have missed something here.. ?

Seems like the EFI checker, is not liking this iMac afterall.. ?

I hope somebody can help me out.. ?

Thank you for explaining this. I didn't realise that it was included. I'm looking at a low-power AMD (the WX5100 specifically) so I guess that would mean, with a bit of luck, that I could run Mojave on the 3,1.

Thanks for pointing to that thread Joe. I really appreciate it. I have posted a question there about the WX5100. I see the WX7100 seems to work so hopefully the little brother does too. Greg Gant seems to suggest it would work.

Since updating to 004 on my MacBook 5,2 the backlight control is totally broken.
It stays very dark, the highest setting dims it almost all the way. It can be bright for about 2 seconds on the second to highest setting but immediately gets dark again. Reinstallation of patches hasn't solved it.
I uploaded a video of the issue on youtube (for some reason the forum kept saying "there was an error".
