With the Late 2009 to Mid 2011 (iMac11,x and iMac12,x) I experienced this reluctance to apply the latest firmware upgrade on a regular base.

You need to install the latest supported macOS version on the internal disk to get it done and sometimes it needed more than a few attempts - which can be annoying because your have to start over, again.

At some time in the past I kept the upgrades (/System/Library/Updates ??) and moved them to an internal disk to avoid the endless download loop (a private cache server would do the same job).

The only idea I have: Try again until you succeed.
Thanks @Ausdauersportler. I ran the security update another time while I was out at lunch today. It didn’t work so I’ll try again tomorrow.

Two issues and to clarify. The boot ROM can be updated per http://dosdude1.com/catalina/ •Important Info https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmZ5KmpG4SeHF8gWrHmoLcG9a3BNAcWWQoERg4q2J1kuQL/OfficialAPFSFWUpdate.zip. Another important point - it is not possible to run a @dosdude1 unsupported macOS install with SIP enabled.
Thanks for replying and clarifying @K two and for recommending dosdude’s boot ROM update package. I downloaded it and reviewed the documentation last night.

I’m wondering about your sense of the risk level associated with running dosdude’s package compared with updating the firmware through Apple’s security update. Although I have a complete updated backup of the iMac’s hard disk, I don’t have a second running Mac at the moment because my Mac Pro needs a new graphics card.

I’d very much prefer to avoid shipping the iMac to dosdude for hardware repairs in the event that the machine ends up bricked because I ran a non-Apple boot ROM update installer. Losing this iMac even temporarily right now would be really disruptive for me.

How much more risk would I need to tolerate to run dosdude’s updater? Thanks again for your advice.

A fair question, although never read a complaint regarding this package, stick with Apple if you must be sure. There is always a chance for user error with any non-automated software.

I have installed Mojave on an iMac 11,1 (Late 2009 Model) and seem to keep having issues on and off. I think I've isolated that I cannot get the Kext files to load, and I am unable to get into recovery (get the Blocked Sign) to disable SIP. I saw that @dosdude1 was able to enable Recovery to be patched and usable on Catalina, so why can it not be done on Mojave?

In the mean time is there any way to fix these errors? Since I cannot get into Recovery to disable SIP I can't seem to get Mojave to let me run Kext with invalid signatures.

Code:
Kext with invalid signature (-67062) denied: /private/var/db/KernelExtensionManagement/Staging/tmp.dOvtDS/9A124014-0840-4607-B37E-DA35360D7D6A.kext
Bundle (/System/Library/Extensions/GeForceTesla.kext) failed to validate, deleting: /private/var/db/KernelExtensionManagement/Staging/tmp.dOvtDS/9A124014-0840-4607-B37E-DA35360D7D6A.kext
Unable to stage kext (/System/Library/Extensions/GeForceTesla.kext) to secure location.

I have a wireless mouse as well, and for some reason when I run the USB flash tool I cannot use the keyboard to select terminal or the patcher tool by pressing return/enter (I can select up and down)

I ran into a conversation about the Security Updates, where the stability of both of my machines got really bad since the 2020-005/006 and Safari debacle, that pointed out that the size of the update compared to previous update(s) and what the update was to contain implied that it was the same as the previous with the new addition and could be run instead.

So for the heck of it I ran the 2021-002 on a base 18G103 install and it ran without incident and it brought the version to 18G8022. BUT my machine, a 2008 MBP 7,1 is running Old Dog in the Late Summer Sun Slow.

I just can't seem to get either my 3,1 or the 7,1 to run as perfectly as all the previous OSs and before the SecUpd and Safari debacle.

I love and have lived in dosdudes Patcher Updates for ages, the wonders of modern technology they are, but since the Safari debacle, and I don't even use it, my machines are just not the same. Nowhere near the same. But this Security update and Safari thing has become a huge road block leaving lasting issues.

You definitely don’t need to over complicate things for yourself. Since your machine supports High Sierra natively, before attempting doing anything “unsupported” you must first squeeze every last drop of what your machine does support.
I want to see your machine running the very latest High Sierra(firmware, security, build number). After you achieved this, you can start thinking about gaining new ground in the “unsupported” territory.

Boot into the v.1.3.7 @dosdude1 patcher USB, re-install the recommended patches. Select Force Cache Rebuild then restart. Everything should now work. If you must - Booted into Mojave Recovery with OpenCore3b1 w/o issue. Drop the EFI ƒ (attached) onto MacOS extended, journaled, use Master Boot Record rather than GUID when preparing the bootable USB. Recovery can be selected from the list upon restart holding option key. OpenCore Boot Picker list will see anything bootable. BTW- The v.1.3.7 patcher turns off SIP as part of the Mojave installation.

I will try OpenCore, I assume this will allow me to get into recovery even on the imac 11,1?

One of the issues I have with the USB patcher is that I can't select anything after I get in, because my mouse isn't recognized, so I have to use the keyboard to do so. I can go up and down on the menu but then I can't select anything, it's like it doesn't recognize the enter or return key.

I've just remade the USB patcher again just in case.

USB issues can be fixed with a SMC reset. ? A wired KB and mouse makes life easier but BT should work, too. A fully functional mouse is required when using the patcher.

The USB loads up fine. I can use the arrow keys to go up and down the menu, I just can't select anything.
That happens to me too. It's like it ignores clicks on my trackpad. In the menu, I try clicking the icons, the words, try the enter key and nothing works (only the up and down arrows) - and then all of a sudden it will work. I've never figured out why. I'm never sure whether to click once, or double-click. I have sometimes, in the past, remembered to connect a USB mouse - and, as far as I remember, that would work without issue. Mystery.

Hello Good People,
The recent Backlight Control Patch appeared as an update a day ago. After installing this update I can now say the F1 & F2 screen keys are working. At last everything is working properly.

Thank you dosdude!

I forgot to ask you if you are using a wifi USB dongle with your mini? Quite a few revisions of the original cards were dropped from the support since Sierra. Or were you lucky enough to have a revision that worked out of the box?

Discovered the Broadcomm Patch can be installed from any @dosdude1 patcher that provides it, I used v.1.3.7 Select only the single patch. I have used a Wi-Fl dongle in the past - EDIMAX AC1200, 21$ US on Amazon. The EDIMAX drivers were on their website. Worked without issues. ?

Security Update 2021-003 (18G9028), Safari14.1, MRT 1.77 and X-Protect 2144 successfully installed w/SilentKnight. Restart into v.1.3.7 recommended patches, Force Cache Rebuild. So far, so good ?

Is there a separate download for the Security Update 2021-003? Couldn't find it so far. If not: How can I get this on my MacBook Pro 5.5? I could install Safari 14.1 via Software Update, but the Security Update wasn't displayed there.

Thanks in advance for helpful hints ...

Go to Library/Updates and delete everything in there. Now, it will show up. ?

We will have to wait until Apple offers a separate download. This takes about 10 days.

Absolutely NO reason to use HFS+ past 10.14.3 unless you enjoy a PITA at update time.
I still have a SL partition on my drive, trying to format into APFS the Mojave partition didn't work. Maybe because my backup ist HFS+? I will delete SL one day, because I cannot start it anymore.

"I discovered the light!" when two nights ago I converted my Mojavè partition to APFS and not only was initial installation cake, but updating through the Software Update was the smoothest and most complete ever only needing 3 updates. I have been trying to figure out manual updates and gave myself more brain damage. Especially after the 2020-005/006 & Safari debacle. Upon initial install it auto-updated from base 18G103 directly to the 2021-002, Safari 14.1 and MRT & all that stuff. SilentKnight had nothing to do.

I updated to the 2021-003 using SilentKnight and it took longer than if I had done all the conversion work manually. But it worked. At times I thought it was frozen. No. It was working . . .

Now to do this to my 3,1. I only hope that Migration Assistant works better. Have to use it for Office.
