Is this new? I know the charging chime is new for older MBP (like mine), but I’ve never seen that very iOS battery charging icon before today. Can be reproduced by turning the screen off and then plugging in the charger (beta 2).

I am going back to Catalina for now - too many small and larger annoyances as of now.

Thinking of installing the public beta once it’s released, don’t use my MacBook Pro for work, use it for entertainment and web browsing,

What issues are you having?

I liked Snow Leopard most of all.. So pure!

Would be so relaxing to have this now:

Request:
What does the new United Kingdom Siri voice sound like?
(System Preferences > Accessibility > Speech)
They said it’s been updated to a new machine learning-based one.

-----That's indeed nostalgic, but Mavericks through Catalina — modulo what I've heard about that last release's indeterminate progress bars being inscrutable — remain a good compromise between this and Big Sur. (The skeumorphism introduced in Lion was quaint, but served no real non-aesthetic purpose.) (Additionally, I'll note explicitly that all of this is, of course, still only my personal opinion on the matter. Even then, I'm generally fine with anything that's not hard to read or find controls in and doesn't have to much excess white or negative space between UI elements.)

-----Come to think of it, TinkerTool used to offer more modifications users could perform to system UI, AFAICR. I'm aware code injection's much harder these days, but perhaps Big Sur presents an opportunity for the application to introduce some new tweaks on top of any refinements Apple might make to polish the OS's design before general release.

-----Moving on, this part of the discussion has derailed the thread; the forum has other threads for critiquing Big Sur's UI redesign, does it not?

What issues are you having?

  1. I had to reboot it every morning, as it crashed in sleep mode over night (connected to two monitors)
  2. One software my company uses changes the focus away from the current app every 15 seconds, which is of course especially annoying during typing
  3. Dozer did not work properly
  4. Alfred did not work in a dependable manner
  5. Edge crashed multiple times a day (the Dev channel version)
Some other smaller ones, but those are the main ones

I am using macOS 11 Big Sur on an unsupported Mac (Mid 2009 15“ MacBook Pro with 2.66GHz C2D, 480GB SSD and 6GB RAM) with some issues (like no graphics acceleration and sound only working via USB soundcard). But I already remarked some major changes. At first (and most important) the new UI style. It features rounded corners on all windows and new square icons with rounded corners. Fonts and menu styles changed in an way I see as very positive, very modern and refreshed. The top menu bar features a new control center well-known from iOS and the UI itself has also new symbols. I also positively remarked the redesigned system sounds. I needa say that I liked the original sounds but I also like the new ones, especially Sosumi. Btw: who doesn’t know the History behind this sound or why it is named like that: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sosumi
Okay, it still has some issues (f.e. Photos crashes at mine everytime I tryna open it or the fact that trying to open an icon in the menu bar crashes my UI back to login screen). But for this very early state of developing I just say wow. Apple, you made a good step forward into the future. Also thanks to all active devs in the scene who does make it possible to run the system of the future on machines of the past.

Music app has the same red icon as on iOS
Dictionary loses the perspective view
Mission Control now square like the rest of the icons

Battery icon is fixed. Though it's kind of weird that on the System Preferences screen it turned to the left but on the Battery screen it turned to the right

Weather widget is still broken for me and shows Cupertino for "Current Location".
There is also a new Photos For You widget, similar to iOS

Music app also has a new Toolbar. not much visual change (other than the bug with the play icon), but it looks like they separated the Airplay button from the volume

One last thing: this is a big update with 12gbs. It has a download and install process similar when you update the OS from the first time even when you update from Beta 2. So they probably changed around lots of things. Now it says Version 11 in the about this mac window.

You could have selected to download just the update, which is around 4 GB, rather than the full image.

Here's my post with all of the changes I have found so far
- Music app has the iOS 14 icon. To be honest, in the context of the bundle of media apps (Music, Podcasts and TV), I think that the new icon makes more sense and looks more in line with the other icons. Furthermore, it makes sense for the pink accent colour of the app. I liked the previous icon more, but I can see why Apple might have wanted to change it
- Battery icon is changed
- Notifications icon is updated and is no longer a low resolution one
- There's a separator after the sidebar
- The results box in the Music app now appears properly (and the app doesn't crash when having input larger than the size of the search field)
- In the Music app, right clicking on an item within the “Browse” and “Listen Now” content areas no longer opens the contextual menu at a random location. I believe the issue started occurring in Catalina, but it is resolved now.
- In the Music app, the "Play" icon is new. Not sure if I'm a fan of it. It is also inconsistent with the Podcasts app which uses the old one. Seems more like a bug (hopefully)
- The dialog box when choosing a profile picture in "Users & Groups" has been redesigned, before the text was going out of the selection
- Safari no longer crashes when I try to select a background image from the file dialog
- Spotlight seems to have been fixed
- Both the date and time appear in the menu bar. I think it was just the time before, but might be wrong about this one.
- Some of the highlighted controls across the system weren't rendering properly in the previous betas, this seems to have been fixed as well
- AirPods are no longer showing twice under "Sound" in the menu bar
- New sounds when making screenshots and moving files

New issues:
- The menu bar says that battery service is recommended (battery capacity is at 93%). I saw another person on reddit having the same issue, so I assume it's a bug.
- Sidecar seems slightly broken. I'm getting lots of empty space on top of the screen and also very awkward extension of the sidebar (highlighted with a white circle)

Whoever is in charge of the battery icons just can't get things right. Prepare for round 2 of getting ripped into by every Youtuber.
