I think I might be missing a part of what you said here. I ran the post-installation tools from my USB installer after installing High Sierra. What do you mean by changing the software update URL?
He means reset the software update catalog URL. You can do this by running "sudo softwareupdate --clear-catalog" in Terminal.

I just gave that a shot, no change. Still don't see any updates available. I confirmed I am on 10.13, and not 10.13.1

@dosdude1 would it ruin my macOS High Sierra installation if I applied the security patch 2017-001 from Apple on my Mac? I just want to be sure my MacBook is safe, but I don't want to break my installation either. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Why not simply enable a password for the root account? Open terminal and type (no quotes) “sudo passwd root” press enter, enter a password, and be done with it.

No, it shouldn't cause any issues with your patched install.

...but runs like a dream on my unsupported iMac 8,1

Guy,
I am thinking about upgrading my iMac 24" 8,1 (Early 2008) with 4GB's RAM and the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU,
to High Sierra. It is currently on El Capitan.

I have actually already done (3) 2009 Mac Mini's Plus changed the Wifi Card in the three.
AND all three now have SSD's & 8GB's RAM, which make them run buttery smooth.

Super Thanks to Dosdude1 and everyone who provided input, feedback and resources, Of Course!!!

I was just looking for some actual feedback from a 2008 iMac 24" owner about their experience Post the upgrade.

The thing with those, is the RAM is typically ONLY 4GB's, though they can be upgraded to 6GB's

Mine is a 2008 iMac Early 24" with 4GB's RAM and the 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU. No Plans to change the drive to SSD.

which is why I seek answers to:

Does it have 4GB's RAM or 6GB's?
Does it have an SSD or the stock hard drive?
Did you change the WiFi card or are you tethering to ethernet?
(for this one, I am actually planning on ethernet to Airport Express, for Wifi)

Looking forward to these specific answers and anything else you might share, so I can decide.
Thank you

I successfully upgraded my early 2009 Mac to High Sierra through DOSDude's patcher. Ran the post install, everything running smooth and as it seems even smoother than before. Wifi working.

One thing though... I cannot buy and install Pixelmator Pro. App Store reports: "Your computer does not meet the minimum install requirements for the app". Does anyone know how to resolve this or work around it?

[EDIT] The minimum system requirements of Pixelmator Pro are: "Pixelmator Pro requires a Mac compatible with Metal 2 running MacOS 10.13 High Sierra".

You need a computer with support for Metal to buy and or use Pixelmator Pro.

Hi Czo, I was hoping the upgrade to High Sierra would resolve that ;-) Finally time to buy a new iMac then, I suppose. Anyway, not regretting the upgrade, my Mac is running veeeeery smooth now.

Metal support still available since El Capitan. Sierra or High Sierra can't be used to add missing hardware features.

The root security patch worked fine on both my unsupported machines via the App Store.
And I got the security patch again the next day. I thought it was some error with these unsupported Macs but it turns out I got the same update on my supported Macs as well.

It's because Apple re-updated the patch and re-released it, but without changing the release number.

[doublepost=1512131097][/doublepost]On one of my patched 10.13 Macs, I lost a whole bunch of my icon graphics. Apps still work fine though. How to fix this?

EDIT:

Never mind. It fixed itself after a reboot. Strange.

Hello,

I have problems booting from USB thumb drive.
The disk is correctly created by the patcher app but when I try to boot from the USB volume I get the forbidden grey icon.
I have MacPro 3,1. It is a 1x2,8 upgraded to 2x3,0 Ghz with a Radeon R9.

Any idea?
Thank you

I created a new USB boot drive the other day w/ patcher v2.5 for my MacPro3,1 and it boots fine.

I have a new problem. my isight webcam no longer works. my mbp ist the 5,5 version. 10.13.1 is installed an last security patch too. smc reset and pram reset = no luck. SIP is re-disabled.

when i starts facetime or photobooth, the screen is black and the led shines not green. no error message.

please help me!

I read somewhere that there were some issues with Adobe CC 2017 and HS. Have these issues been worked out?

Anyone aware of any issues with CC2018 and HS?

Thanks.

For those of you who have successfully upgraded to 10.13.1, did you do so the usual way via the App Store (patched by dosdude1's installer during the original 10.13.0 installation), or did you manually download the 10.13.1 update from Apple and apply dosdude1's patcher to that?

As noted above, I can't seem to upgrade to 10.13.1; my Macbook5,1 simply reboots without completing the installation, and no error messages. I am therefore stuck on 10.13.

Thanks,
cinergi

Same problem. Any Ideas ?

has anybody had any luck getting Continuity to work on unsupported hardware on HS? I'm running a mid-2009 MBP with a Gymle USB dongle and just keep ending up with kernel panics whatever I do. it looks like the IOBluetoothFamily.kext has been fundamentally changed in high Sierra so I can't find the Mac identifier strings to change them.

imac 9.1 24" installed 10.13 and worked fine also security update and upgraded through App Store.
I patched it with the installer but got the sign on the grey screen, then patched it again with force rebuild caches but still no luck. I must mention that it is a external drive with macOS Sierra and High Sierra.
Can it be that booting fails because I've got two systems installed?

I still have a mute Mac Pro 3,1. After the install of 10.13.2, seems like my audio only works through bluetooth and not through the outputs. Please let me know how to reinstall audio drivers on High Sierra please. I can't go through another day without music :'(

I made the patch for the App Store. It's modify the following things in the update process:
- removing the creation of the trusted preboot environment
- skipping updating the recovery partition because it's not necessary for us
- skipping all of the firmware updates

The first (preboot creation) and the second step made the time differences. Many people also find non workable Safari and App Store after 10.13.1 on their compatible machine. So if you also find this simply run onyx to resolve it. Something is wrong but not in the update/upgrade process because compatible macs also suffering from this "bug".
@Czo: thanks alot for the insight into the update process. I followed your instructions and presto: my MBP 4,1 is running smoothly with latest macOS 10.13.2 dev. beta 6 (build number: 17C85a)

Nah dude, a couple of days ago I was bored at home, I tried every Os X since Yosemite till macOS High Sierra and it only works good on OS X Yosemite and till OS X El Capitan 11.3, even on El capitan if you update to 11.6 it stops working, I’ve tried beta versions etc but nothing, there are very little advances especially with dongles, It’s a lost hope I think... they pretty much just keep updating that tool just for people that have machines that have swapped cards, dongles seems way harder to make work I guess

Im a on a macbook pro 17 mid 2009

Continuity and Handoff works fine for mine on High Sierra with my iMac Mid 2011 and MacBook Pro Early 2008 with Apple’s Broadcom 4360 combined card. Simply remove the old WiFi and Bluetooth module and use only the 4360! And patch one plist in bluetooth framework and the Airport kext.

Hi there @Czo , both your models that you say can be upgraded, in the case of my macbook pro 17 mid 2009 has two sperate modules for bluetooth and wifi, and get what you are saying, but there is no way to connect apple broadcom. 4360 or any other to my model, if searched and compared every option out there... the conections are diferent and placement is also crazy...
