I have the same issue but I have 2 mid-2009 17" MBPs and one of them has the backlight issue and the other one doesn't although I did install the OS a bit differently on them. See my posts above on this page.

Onyx Maintenance script didn't do anything for the backlight although I'm not sure if its supposed to.

Hm, I see. Well that's weird. I noticed you also formatted to APFS. I was considering that but decided to stick with HFS+ just in case. Looks like it was a pain in the ass. Did you format both your mid-2009's to APFS?

Just installed the macOS 10.13.2 Supplemental Update from the App Store on my Mac Pro 3.1. No problems at all, just a reboot, that's it.

Oh, just one thing: The NVIDIA driver 378.10.1025.102 (downloaded from NVIDIA's website) was disabled ("Not compatible") for the built-in GeForce 285 GTX, but the included mac OS driver seems to work fine until NVIDIA will deliver an update.

The MackBookPro5,2 shouldn't have the backlight patch installed. It breaks the backlight controls. Fortunately, @dosdude1 has an uninstaller script for the mistakenly installed backlight patch:

http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/uninstallbkltpatch.sh.zip

In my case, I accidentally selected "Macbook5,2" instead of "MacbookPro5,2" in the post-install pulldown, and brought the problem on myself. But, it's easily fixed.

Installation went well on my mid-2009 17-inch MacBook Pro, but I've run into one issue. My Macbook is a 5,2. When choosing this in the Post install app, it includes the back light fix patch and was selected. After High Sierra finished installing I tested the brightness key and while it responds showing the brightness status, it does not make the screen brighter or dimmer, just stays the same. I noticed the patch was also included in the patch updater in Utilities and I installed that along with the other available patches but it still hasn't fixed it. Is there any way to get this to work?
Other than that, everything else seems to work great.

Quick Question :: Was everyone here able to install the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Supplemental Update that came out yesterday? From the App Store? Because I don't think I received it et. I'll check in with you all, to let you know of my progress (MacBookPro5,2). I can post additional details upon request.

I was able to install 10.13.2 Supplimental to MacbookPro5,2 directly from the Updates tab in the "App Store.app" as normal, without issue.

You can run "softwareupdate -l" in a terminal to manully scan for updates, in case there's something odd going on with the "App Store.app"

You might have to run to the app "/Applications/Uilities/Patch Updater.app" then [View Installed Updates], right click on the [Software Update Patch] row and select [Re-install...] to make sure the modified update service is running.

You can also run "defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate" in a terminal and see some potentially useful info. I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think you should see a CatalogURL listing -- at least I don't, on my machine.

On my iMac 9,1 the update didn't show up right away in the App Store. Even after checking for updates it showed as up to day. Then a few minutes later, after closing and re-opening the App Store, it showed up.

Thank you for the response! I guess it turns out I made the same mistake. I could have sworn I chose MacBook Pro 5,2 from the pulldown menu but I guess it turns out it was actually MacBook 5,2. Fortunately all the other patches were the same for both ID's. I went back and ran the script to uninstall the backlight patch, restarted, and now everything works as it should, thanks for mentioning that.

I also installed the 10.13.2 update from App Store last night. No issues here as well.

Me, too, actually! I was so certain I had chosen the right machine, so ready to blame the installer. But, after fiddling with it, after the fact, I'm 99% convinced it must have been me just scanning for the first thing ending in 5,2. I kinda wish the installer would save us from ourselves by autoselecting the correct machine in advance without human intervention. I'm actually puzzled why it doesn't, because I think it auto-selects when you're running the pre-install patcher, but doesn't during post-install.

Also, I think it'd be cool if @dosdude1's "/Applications/Utilities/Patch Updater.app" had the option to uninstall a patch directly (or install a particular version) when you right clicked on it, and/or if it somehow validated/indicated which patches were appropriate for the current machine. But, I know that's extra work, mainly of utility to people that have made some kind of mistake somewhere.

The reason I have the user select the machine in the post-install tool is because it makes it easier when doing an install for a specific Mac from a different machine. What I'll probably do is make the program automatically select the model in the drop-down menu, still allowing the user to change it if necessary. Thanks for the suggestion!

That sounds perfect! Thanks for that, and doing all you do!

I'm pretty sure I did the same thing, I saw the 5,2 and that's what I chose. It does auto detect your ID and does say it's a MacBookPro 5,2, so you know what to choose, but if you're not paying attention it's easy to pick the wrong one.

That's a great idea. So that it not only auto detects the correct ID but also chooses it automatically for you.
Although if I have to install it again I'll make sure I'm paying attention to what I've chosen next time.
Other than that, everything else went smoothly, thanks for your hard work.

I just bought another Samsung 850 EVO SSD and it has the same issue as my previous 850 EVO where I can’t format it APFS using DU from a patched installer but will format fine from a non patched installer.

I'm having an issue with updates on some patched Mac Pro 4,1's. They're currently running 10.13, but they can't see patches in the app store for 10.13.2

I've run sudo softwareupdate --clear-catalog and re-run the swupatch.sh on the target machines, but they don't see anything in the results after running the patch:
Would you like to refresh available updates now? (y/n): Y
Software Update Tool

Finding available software
No new software available.
Any thoughts on how I could get those patches? I tried downloading the update pkgs from Apple directly, but no dice. It says they aren't supported on this machine, which makes sense.

I’ve successfully installed High Sierra on both a Mac Mini (Early 2009) and a MAC Pro (Early 2008) using @dosdude1’s patch tool. However, the APFS patch is grayed out in the post-install tool for both machines. Which machines support the APFS patch?

Unmount the disk before formatting to APFS using Disk Utility, that should make it work.

So like some others I botched my MBP 5.2 patching by selecting the wrong profile in the patcher. This was compounded by the fact that I couldn't format APFS using the patched installer with my SSD. To be honest I'm not sure I can format any drive APFS with a patched 10.13.2 installer. I just tried to format a hybrid HDD from the installer DU and it errored out. Anyway my solution is to install using a non patched installer on a supported Mac that has SATA which is kind of a hard solve if you don't have it. Patched on the supported Mac and then swap the drive back into the unsupported Mac. Posting now from a working MBP 5.2.

new to the site have a question regarding the patch for the unsupported mac for high sierra. i have a mid 2009 macbook pro. i used the patch and installed high sierra and it working fine up until the upgrade to 10.13.2 and then after it rebooted it get stuck on the load screen with the apple logo and status bar. i have used command v to see whats going on and it says that its creating to many corpses. i have tired reinstalling high sierra and repatching with no luck. has anyone else had this issues?

Update supplementary 10.13.2 onto MacPro 3,1 without any problem.

But one thing is that after update to HighSierra, my computer will not wake up from Energy Saver mode. Have to hold power button to reboot.

Right now I change my energy saver on computer to sleep in 3 hrs. Very tempting to put it to Never. Any idea why?

Well, I converted my startup disk in my Mac Pro (Early 2008) to APFS and applied the APFS patch. Unfortunately, my system was not bootable after the process completed. I rebooted to the High Sierra installer and tried to reapply the APFS patch in case something went wrong the first time. I also verified via Terminal that my data is intact.

Link below is a screenshot from when I attempted to boot from my normal startup disk.

Any ideas on how I can recover my system?

[doublepost=1515723642][/doublepost]No help for you I know, but I just updated my Mac Pro 3,1 running 10.13.2 with nVidia GTX680 and iMac 2014 wifi/BT4LE card and dosdude1's APFS patched boot Samsung 850 EVO SSD on Sonnet PCie card to new 10.13.2 supplemental update.
It went without a hitch, so it can be done.

Well, I ended up reformatting my SSD as HFS+ and restored from a cloned backup. I might revisit it again later.

Did you truly follow the steps on Dosdude1 site? (Step 8, and 9) Did you apply the high sierra Patch of your machine after the installation of macOS? It’s important to follow the steps. Then you will be fine.
