In every case the boot drive remains unbootable. I've tried both journaled and APFS formats and get the same results with both after multiple forced cache rebuilds.
.
It is the same! As HS installation automatically converts any SSD drives to APFS.

No. High Sierra requires Nehalem or newer processor for Radeon drivers. The current "hack" is nothng more than reverting the drivers to the version found in Sierra.
What do you mean? I'm using cMP 3.1 + Radeon HD7950, just installed High Sierra and no problems with ATI drivers!

I can't update to 10.13.5 beta 2 - getting error message saying downloaded file cannot be verified - repeatedly. date and time are correct although if I try to set current location automatically, i get the message 'unable to determine current location at this time'. I have logged off and on many times, no joy. first time i am having the error message. Does anyone know how to solve this, or will I have to search for and download the iso file? Any help will be welcome.

Czo,
Thank you for the link.

I installed the Continuity-Activation-Tool on my MacBook Pro, being careful to choose OS 10.3 compatible version.
Unfortunately, while the CAT software installed fine, my computer kept rebooting automatically at various stages of boot process. With each cyclical reboot a message: "your computer shut down because of a problem ... etc" would appear.
The message indicates, usually, a kernel panic somewhere during the boot process.
I had to reinstall OS 10.13.4 from a dongle via dosdude1's method, to be able to boot into the OS. There does not seem to be any "permanent" sequelae to the CAT installation attempt, post the OS reinstall. A search of the web did confirm, that other users of the tool run into kernel panic(s).

Hello,

First of all, excuse my frenchy basic English ;-)
Then, many many thanks for all those great advices !

I've got a Macmini late 2009 working with High Sierra (thanks to dosdude1!).
Wifi work (with sometimes kernel panics) thanks to a trick seen on Youtube ("wifi fix on sierra unsupported macs")
Wifi can work too with a TP-Link USB dongle with his software.
Bluetooth is recognized with original Airport but it doesn’t support BT4
Bluetooth BT4 dongle BCM20702 is enable (i can use it when launch with HCI controller selector in Bluetooth Explorer).

My issue :

Handoff is NOT PRESENT in preferences panel/general/Allow (...) after patched with CAT

My question :

Is it possible to use my wifi dongle in order to resolve this issue ?

Is it really possible to have Handoff with my configuration ?

I don't know if it is a problem due to wifi or BT or twice ?

In advance, thank you for your answer.

I don't believe you can use those features with a USB WiFi adapter (as the system detects those as Ethernet adapters), and that "WiFi fix" isn't going to help anything either. You'll need to swap out your WiFi card with the BRCM4322 module from an A1342 MacBook, which will allow full WiFi support, and should also work with CAT.

Was anyone able to install the 10.13.4 security update that was released today through the MAS? In the App Store for me it says No Updates Available.

Yes it works but I did it the long way since I have the dreaded ATI 5770 HD on my MacPro 3,1 . I just download 10.13.4 and use the patch. Takes a while.

Thanks for the reply. The update just showed up in the MAS. It's weird, it was showing No Updates Available all day till just now. I just had to re-patch the Backlight Control, everything else seems to work fine after the update.

Downloading it now from the App store on my MacPro3,1, I'll report back after the install is complete.

EDIT: Download and install completed OK, took 2 or 3 restarts but all is good, now just have to wait for an Nvidia web driver update.

Ack! I installed this update on the strength of your recommendation. When I downloaded it from the App store and installed it on my MacPro3,1 it failed to install. The installation hangs with the progress bar showing about 2/3 of the way to completion.

Pardon me but I don't recall recommending anything, only reporting my own personal experience.

10.13.4 security update installed on MacPro3,1. Only one restart. Duration approx. 12 min. System now 10.13.4 (17E202). It seems to be O.K. at present.

The latest Security Update 2018-001 on my MacBook 5,1 (late 2008) did not make any problems. Just in case someone is wondering and waiting for confirmation.

Just FYI. I have a MacPro 3,1 with HD5770 graphic card - the latest security update didn't
work for me. First I just install the update as prompted in the Update App, it hung upon restart.
I then tried patching it with Dosdude1's patch, got further with the restart but got the red screen
of death. Sigh. I guess I should try applying the update, then the patch before restarting.
I was running 10.13.4.

Same here—no problems with install of security update (17E202) onto MacPro 3,1 with GTX 680 2 GB and Samsung 860 EVO boot drive.

Well... I said I'd never buy another iMac. But, now I've got one, and I held to my bargain... it was FREE

So, there I sit with a 2009 iMac, and what to do with it? Of course, why not, let's put High Sierra on it. It worked great, went smooth, no problems.

I did make one mistake that caused me to start over though. I migrated from my Hackintosh to save me some effort. Well, that was a mistake. It took the fully working and updated High Sierra install that I had just done, and Hackintoshed it. Surprisingly, it still booted just fine, no real operational problems. Except that my speakers didn't work because the audio KEXT for the Hackintosh had replaced the audio for the iMac.

I debated on splicing and hacking the Hackintosh mods out, and instead elected to just start over, and reinstall fresh with High Sierra, and then manually pull my data and programs over from the Hackintosh's hard drive. Which went perfectly fine. No blending of Clover and Hackintosh kexts, EFI's, etc.

So, everything is up and running, perfectly smooth. High Sierra is running pretty good.

The only complaint I have, is apparently I got bit by the High Sierra video glitch that means some of my iTunes movies have scrambled video if I play them in iTunes 12.7.4.80 on the iMac. No apparent / obvious reason for which ones. They were encoded with Handbrake, but most work fine, and a lot don't. They are in m4v format, and h264 encoding.

I can't see any obvious distinguishing difference between which one's play and which ones don't. They will all play just fine in VLC, and they all play just fine when my AppleTV 3 pulls them over the network. So the files are NOT scrambled. It's just iTunes and Quicktime 10 (the version that comes with Sierra) that can't play them apparently.

QuickTime Pro 7.6.6 plays them just fine. So this is apparently a software problem in the new Quicktime / iTunes software.

If anyone has any great ideas on fixing that issue, I'd appreciate it.

As for the High Sierra installers... I thank you all for your wonderful contributions, and dosdude1... excellent work.

Yeah, I'm still in awe of how well my 24" iMac 9,1 is running HS. Especially after this week's security update to 10.13.4 where I saw a pretty noticeable performance boost for some reason. For what we use the machine for, I honestly have no real interest in getting this machine replaced.

Yes, it handles the task quite well. I’ve been repurposing old cor2duo and core2quad machines that find their way to me over the past couple years. PC’s. And those core2duo’s continue to surprise me. Even against today’s computers, they hold up pretty good.

This is the first iMac I’ve taken in since the G5 fiasco. The design weaknesses are still there. I could kill the screen in 10 minutes if I stressed it hard enough. But I still have my Mac Pro. The problem with the iMac for me has always been cooking the image into the screen under heavy work loads. Looks like precision razor blade carving. Pretty cool looking, but not desirable.

Fortunately, aside from heat, the other issues of the G5 iMac are mostly gone. The only good thing about the G5 iMacs was how easy they came apart. I wish current iMacs were that serviceable.

The Mac Pro suits me for heavy tasks, cause the heat doesn’t affect the screen. And boy is it a lot of heat. My house’s heater runs a lot more when I don’t have my Workhorse running.

But, for my daily light use, the iMac will suit me fine. I’m trying to cut the electric bill and only fire up the energy suckers when I need the power.

For the last year I’ve had the Mac Pro for my daily use, a small hackintosh core2quad Dell optiplex 745 for running my music and videos to the television/stereo.

With the iMac, I’ll be firing up the Mac Pro a lot less frequently. And it’ll also take the place of my Hackintosh streaming library. And it pulls less power than the Hackintosh does, and way less than the Pro does. So I’m expecting to cut my electric bill in half.

I have a lot of Windows (natural lighting). So really, the computers and my refrigerator are my electric bill. Lol.

The old iMac does handle High Sierra really well though. I am impressed.

Within 3 years after I bought this early-'09 iMac I fried the screen. The bottom left third was gone, that part of the screen looked like it got soaked. Luckily I had AC so Apple replaced the display. Knock on wood but I never had the display issue return (it's been 6 years since) and I still push it from time to time. Makes me think Apple, around that time, may have had screens that were more susceptible to heat issues and they replaced them with screens that didn't.

That could be. I’ve been almost tempted to open this one up just to see first hand how to service it. But there’s nothing it needs done in there. So I’ll leave it be. Lol.

Hopefully it’ll give me a long life. The main thing I dislike about the iMac is the idea of replacing the screen when you need a more powerful computer, or even if the computer has a failure. Seems wasteful that if one part goes, that it all goes.

But the flip side is that it takes up less space. And looks nicer.

I’ve read the ifixit page for this model, and doesn’t look difficult to service. So I’ll just have to watch for spare parts.

Tried to install the latest Security Update in my Mac Pro 3.1. Blank screen just before the login window.
Tried reapllying the patch. No luck.
Anyone could do it?

I have a weird problem after updating my Mac Pro 3,1 to High Sierra using dosdudes patch. The install (fresh) went fine. When I replaced the original 4gb of ram with 32gb it won’t boot. All the sticks are good and so are the ram boards. But it will only boot with either 24 or 26gb in it. All of the 4gb sticks are identical.

Any ideas?
