macOS High Sierra (10.13) Unsupported Macs Thread

HI, been trying to decipher from the last page or two whether the patch of night shift has any bearing on the failure to install the 2018-001 security update for me. I have a 3,1 Mac Pro - when applying the update it got stuck somewhere about 3/4 of the progress bar with a frozen white clock-type spinner indicator overlaid. Had to restore from time machine to be able to start from that drive.
Every time it booted it would jump to that section almost immediately as though it had a record of where it was in the update. I was unable to option key on boot or boot verbose or PRAM reset or any other key-combo intervention in the restart so long as it had that drive for startup. Eventually I had to physically pull it out to restart my Mac from another drive. Recently the Night Shift update came through I said yes and applied it. Can I now install the security update or will I get the same result?

Also having a lot of problems with the red screen rectangles or complete red pages in PDF files (and sometimes not just pdf) via preview app or quicklook in Finder (ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB) Is this something I have to live with or is there a fix for this?

I have the exact same problem. If I figure out a resolution I will post it here.

Update: I do not have the exact same problem. I was able to boot by reinstalling the OS and applying the patches. If I install 2018-001 I get the white circle. If I reboot after that I get to the login screen but it is all red with not information on it. I can click in the appropriate spots by guesswork and type in my password and get to the desktop but it is mostly red blocks. I am operational as long as I do not reinstall 2018-001. Curiously the patcher shows the Night Shift update as installed although I did not install it after reinstalling the OS.

Dear all,

I'm having a recurring kernel panic, once or twice a day at random times but often in the first minute or two of boot=up. I'm running High Sierra in a mac pro 3.1 under dosdudes unsupported mac process and randomly the computer will just turn off. I haven't installed the dubious security update just yet so it isn't that causing the problem! Sometime it gives me a report, sometimes not. The main culprit seems to be:

"kext-dev-mode=1 -no_compat_check"

and the panic reports show multiple processor seizures, shown below. Any ideas where I might hunt down what's wrong? All ideas gratefully chewed upon!

Ok, just for the record: my iMac 7,1 is now working as usual. I can shut down, restart, and I was able to install the security update without any problem.
I noticed that in the last days I've had some strange problems with Spotlight, and reindexing in the usual way (like putting my HD in the Privacy list and then deleting it from that list) didn't work.
So I followed an advice I found on this page
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8176120
to rebuild the Launch Services Database and it worked. After that my Spotlight went back to normal and I also was able to reboot the Mac and install the update.

This is what I did:

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain u -domain s -domain l -v

After that I forced a rebuild of the local stores with

sudo mdutil -i on /
sudo mdutil -E /

Yeah, any nVidia card will work.

All you need to do is re-apply the post-install patch after installing the security update, and select "Force Cache Rebuild" before rebooting. Then, it should work no problem.

I got this to work with one additional step that you helpfully provided in your Patch Update Tool. Fortunately I had ssh server enabled so I could run the additional command. From another machine on the network, ssh into your mac and run the following:

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo shutdown -r now <--- To reboot

I had to run this from a different machine since my video was so corrupt I could not make out anything. You present the kextcache command in a dialog just before the machine reboots when running the patch update tool the install drive. Fortunately it stayed up long enough for me to read it.

Thank you for your help in keeping my old but still useful computer up to date!

How does High Sierra work on a Mid 2011 Mac Mini with a 5400 rpm hard drive and 8Gb RAM?
This is the longest I've gone without upgrading to a new OS because I'm afraid of it slowing down like my old Mini did when I upgraded a few years ago to whatever was current at the time

I installed the security update with no issues on my MacBook5,1 about a week ago. Tonight, I noticed that night shift didn’t kick in. Went to system preferences and the night shift tab wasn’t there. I checked the patch updater, and night shift was there in the list of installed patches. Updater didn’t find any new updates.

Then I made the stupid mistake of installing the original nightenabler from the Sierra thread. Now boot process takes couple minutes longer and tells me that there is no keyboard connected. Recovery partition doesn’t even boot, shows me the “no” symbol and shuts down.

I redid the patch with rebuild cache option, it didn’t help. I also re-disabled SIP from the terminal of the patched install disk, that didn’t help either. Don’t have a TimeMachine backup either. I also tried to run the sudo kextcache command from the single user mode, which didn’t help either.

Does anyone have any suggestion, other than reinstalling High Sierra?

You're going to have to re-install at this point, but in the future you can always use the built in Patch Updater tool to re-install overwritten or broken patches, by right-clicking on them, and selecting "re-install".

You probably just had to re-install it by right-clicking on "Night Shift Patch" and choosing "Re-install…".

Those are old instructions for Sierra, not High Sierra.

I still have my old HD with El Capitan on it, that I can boot from, and I have a USB HD enclosure. So I can go in to the High Sierra Volume and delete/replace files. Is there anything I can do to fix this by deleting/replacing files, instead of re-installing High Sierra?

Just download this file and replace the one in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks. Set proper permissions.

And dìd you check your HD via Apple diagnostics, is everything all right with the disc itself?

Then, it should work fine. If you follow each stap carefully.

It is known that some USB drives give strange errors, when it’s possible to use another USB stick please do so.
