REALLY APFS is hell for me. Native macbook pro, air, mac pro. all are problems

The ****iing fsroot are invalid everywhere...

That’s pretty awesome. Are you dumping and modifying the existing firmware or did you have to manipulate one of Apple’s updaters? I know some unsupported Macs never got an EFI update (iMac8,1 didn’t). In any case, excited that I may be able to do this on my iMac7,1 in the future. Thanks for all your tireless work on this stuff!
I'm dumping and modifying firmware for testing, but I'm planning on modifying the Apple FW updaters to make it easy for other people to install the custom firmware.

Yeah, any nVidia card will work.

All you need to do is re-apply the post-install patch after installing the security update, and select "Force Cache Rebuild" before rebooting. Then, it should work no problem.

Hello @dosdude1,
First thank you very much for your tool! It has extented my life of my MacPro 3,1.

I'm also facing this problem with this "2018-001 security update". If I understand you correctly, after installing this update, I need to boot again on my USB flash drive where the post-install patch is and run it.

Am I correct?

Thanks for your answer.

Normally you can just install with no issues, but if for some reason something doesn't work correctly after installing, you can simply re-run the post-install patch or re-install patches using the Patch Updater application.

Thanks dosdude1, that did the job. The trick was to intercept that very first restart with the option key and then reapply the latest patches. All went perfectly from that point.

As for red screens and blocks I tried an nVidia GTX1060 card. All was good until I tried two apps I use most of the time on this Mac - After Effects - Yellow flashing everywhere, completely unusable and FinalCut Pro X just refused "graphics card not supported". So back to the Radeon 5850. Will have to live with the red stuff for now. Makinge Adober Reader the default pdf app (displays just fine, no red blocks) is a bit of relief from the most common issues with this but using Quicklook is still a minefield of red windows :(

Hello all. I'm failed to update MacBook4.1 (A1181 < mid 2009) from some lion to High Sierra available now in App Store. Got "stop sign" trying to boot from USB drive's "Base OSX System".
What i've done: On a supported Macbook 12"(APFS) got HS patcher v2.6.2, todays most recent os installation file from AppStore, did everything by instructions for HS except SIP off (seems not applicable on currently running Lion*/Leopard*).
SCM, NVRAM - reseted.
Any ideas?

Wow, sorry. Found a reason. MacBook originally was 2009+, but now it has replaced motherboard from an unsupported macbook4.1. LoL.

Does this imply a new installer and installation process, or a "patch" after the current installation process?

(Thanks!)

You just need to uninstall the AMD Video Card patch in order to get full acceleration with a new card. Do so by running the script found here. You also need to install the nVidia Web Drivers.

It can be installed whenever, as it's just a firmware update. I'm going to release it over Patch Updater when it's ready, so you will be alerted and prompted to install it.

Are you referring to the Radeon Card here (red blocks etc) or getting the nVidia card to work? I think FCP Pro just looked at the nVidia and said flat-out NO!

With the nVidia I tried their web drivers, all seemed okay till I tried After Effects and got yellow flashing like crazy with any attempt at video playback. But - I had not removed any drivers as per your script - should I try that and try the card again?

Yes, you NEED to remove the AMD video card patch in order to have full support for other cards.

Sorry for off-topic, MacBook 5,1 Unibody 2008, running High Sierra without Recovery HD, have single SSD, GDisk installer not working so cannot correct GPT/MBR hybrid partition using it.

Trying to install Windows 10 RS4, can anyone please help with it :-?

I didn't see it mentioned yet reading myself through this forum thread, so a short note to all mid-2009 and mid-2010 MacBook Pro owners amongst us who are sorely missing gfxCardStatus' former GPU switching on the fly in High Sierra (with gfxCardStatus, this was still possible in Sierra, but is now broken in High Sierra).

There now is a new free, open-source app called

gSwitch

which in its current development state does not yet support GPU switching on the fly on unsupported MacBook Pros. However, the developer of gSwitch has expressed his willingness to investigate if GPU switching on the fly for MBPs older than 2011 could be implemented in gSwitch.

I've already left my feedback in the relevant issue on Github and I would like to encourage everybody else with a relevant MacBook (Pro) to submit their results with the app here, as well:

Does this app work for MacBooks older than 2011?

For me, the missing GPU switching on the fly is the major disadvantage from the otherwise - thanks to @dosdude1's wonderful patcher - rather painless upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra. I'd be more than happy if an individual's commitment to investigating the issue supported by community-based testing efforts could remove this somewhat artificial limitation from these otherwise still decently working notebooks.

I'm currently working on a firmware update utility to add native APFS support to unsupported machines, but in order to do so, I need a ROM dump from every unsupported machine. I have most of them, but I do not have the following and will need someone who owns one to dump its ROM:

- MacPro4,1 (NOT upgraded to 5,1 firmware)
- MacBookPro5,3
- MacBook5,1
- Xserve2,1
- Xserve3,1

(I will edit this list as ROMs are received.)

To dump your ROM, simply download and run this application, which is a program I wrote to dump a system's ROM in OS X. Once you've dumped your ROM, send it to me either by attaching it to a post here, or sending it to me via a PM.

-- Before dumping your ROM, please be sure you're running the latest firmware version for your machine. You can verify using the webpage found here.

-- Also note that SIP MUST be disabled in order to dump your ROM.

Thanks!

[doublepost=1527468565][/doublepost]Hi dosdude1,
When I downloaded the firmware dumper, I got this screen pop-up from ClamXav reporting that it is infected with malware. I hope it is a false positive!

@dosdude1

Feature request: Make the Patch Updater tool be able to uninstall patches and not just re-install. For example, I'd like to back out the Night Shift patch as I have no use for it and accidentally hit install.

I've actually been working on that, but it turned out to be a lot more involved than I had initially thought, so I focused on other things instead. It will be happening eventually, though.

This will probably come across as yet another "me too" post, but I spent some time this weekend installing High Sierra on a freebie Mid-2009 Macbook. Mostly just to see if I could do it.

Not only was I impressed with how easy it was, I'm also blown away with how good the performance is. It lags a little while at startup, but it seems like the longer I use it, the faster it gets. Current versions of most apps seem to outperform their counterparts on my 5,2 iMac running older versions on Snow Leopard. And that's just with the stock hard drive and 2 gigs of RAM. It will be interesting to see how much of a boost it gets from an additional 2 gigs of ram and a nice new SSD.

So far, the only thing I can't get to work is the iSight. The keyboard function keys are all working fine. Brightnes, volumes, iTunes controls all work.

I sure wish I could get this kit running on my iMac. I always thought a 5,2 iMac and a 5,2 Macbook were virtually identical, but I guess not.

Cheers to all who expended efforts to make this work so well. (Donations forthcoming!)
