I know Apple were never meant to occupy the fast lane in office productivity but Genmoji and Image Playground - Really?
Reminds me of Bill Nighy's line at the start of Love Actually

Billy Mack: This is s***, isn't it?
Joe : [gleefully] Yep, solid gold s***, maestro.
Very enjoyable diversions, particularly Image Playground. We are not all Seattle Puritans!

I honestly don't mind waiting for Apple Intelligence features. I welcome the staggered feature rollout if it ensures each feature is a bit more polished.

What I DON'T like, is the inconsistency in feature releases across devices. iOS gets something, but the Mac doesn't. Then the Mac gets something, but AVP support is nowhere to be found. Etc.

Why market AI features SOO heavily, and then immediately limit their device availability? If you're dropping Genmoji, wait for it to be ready on ALL supported devices before releasing it. This way I can properly implement it into my daily usage because I'll know it's always available to me as I bounce around all my devices.

This inconsistent rollout will likely lead to many features being unused or simply forgotten about by the time it's available across the board (or on your specific device).

The way they're handling this Apple Intelligence rollout just reeks of desperation, as if they're trying to get you comfortable with their AI before you get too hooked on others, or as if they feel late to the party and are trying to catch up, and that feels very unlike Apple.
Why on earth should they all be simultaneously identical? No logic in that. Trying to make all releases match perfectly would just delay them. I am very happy to take them as they come. "Perfect is the enemy of good"

Because this is exactly what Apple has stated (Tim specifically) the intended goal is. Tim has said that devices share functionality because they want you to be able to grab whatever device is closest, whether that be an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac, and be able to have the same level of functionality and productivity because you shouldn't have the be encumbered by the technology that is designed to empower you.

Why bother releasing OS' on the same date by your logic? Why bother even sharing features at ALL by your logic?

Genmoji isn't revolutionary, and it's frankly silly that I can see a Genmoji my iPhone made while on my Mac in 15.2, but I can only create them on iOS 18.2.

So I'll say again, this rollout is going against Apple's ethos of "not being first to market, in order to ensure they're best in class."

This is actually quite interesting point. At what point did feature parity start to drift between say ios and mac os? was it ever together in lock-step? how close has it gotten ? I guess the ARM macs brought a lot of ability to have these features match.

It's also interesting be cause i see the 'action button' firstly, with Iphone 15 (i think), and now the 'camera controls' on iphone 16 as being similar from a hardware point of view. I.e. diverging from their vision of simplified interfaces, and minimal buttons, which has infamously been a CORE value of Apple, just look at their mice from the very first macintosh. A user can't press the wrong button if there is only one button.

HOW many times have you been on the shoulder guiding someone what to click on to accomplish a task (on windows) and you have to say, 'No, the right button, right click', or similar. If it's a novice user they get confused now and don't know when you now say click what button to use. Or they don't even know what a 'right click' is. Explaining this is terrible. NO ONE has to explain clicking when there is only one button to be clicked.

Even more so removing the home button (OMG remember the furore? ) so actually adding buttons is the antithis of iphone. Steve Jobs dedicated a whole section of his 'introducing iphone ' speech to the very fact that iphone gets rid of buttons compared to competitors.

My money was on them completely removing buttons al together, and even potentially the port. An iphone with no buttons and no ports would be quite an interesting thing. I can only imagine the reaction, but that kind of thing would take courage.

FOR ****'S SAKE!!! Can I please get a word processor, email client, and PDF software that belong in the twenty-first century... and a laptop that doesn't cost as much as a small Chinese-made car (or an iPhone).

I would have preferred the first release to prioritise something useful and, dare I say, mature. I’m sure teens will love all this.

I hope they fix the STILL BROKEN (as of 15.2) FIREWALL .... NAS Time Machine backups and other large file transfers still not working w/firewall turned on

Wow, more umbilical fluff. Seems Apple are wanting to go the same direction as Microsoft.

All we want is an OS that works. If we want the extra fluff we can install it. Otherwise leave it out, the same as adverts and pre-installed apps.

Come on man, don’t be so demanding, there are more important issues to take care of, for example the “playground” app!

Apple engineers are busy trying to perfect the hair color on the mojis so they can be better represented in the team chat and be more comfortable when they all play with each other and run around in circles and go up and down the slides during their lunch break!

Also, think about it, they thought it through!!
Who cares if you lose your data because the backup doesn’t work, it happened to me last year, Time Machine didn’t finish the backup and corrupted it. It didn’t notify me and when my MacBook Air had an issue on the charging port and died, I lost all my data. I was really angry at Apple but when they replaced the laptop with a brand new one I found that my emojis were all saved on the cloud so I didn’t lose a single one!!!

Cut them some slack please, they are doing an amazing job!

You wouldn't want to trigger someone with by having an emojis with the wrong hair color would you? This stuff is very important.

Like this post of you would rather Apple spent engineering time on making OS X faster and more robust than adding "Genmoji". It costs engineering time - where should it be spent?

I recall Snow Leopard I think - a Mac OS release with no new features, just addressing bugs and inefficiencies - this was the best OS X release ever. It made your computer faster.

Elon: I will make email that is better than Gmail so y'all can leave the moloch

Apple: Here's genmoji, we think they will enhance your life dramatically.

Sorry but looking at X, it's just showing all the things Apple could be doing, given their expertise and resources. And they're doing none of them, instead adding one useless feature after another, and making $5,000 goggles that give you a headache after an hour.

Friends, I have been a fan of Apple since uni days, I worked at Apple in 1998, I love Apple, I have had iPhones since the iPhone 1, since the first iPod, I was running Mac laptops since... in fact I still have the PowerBook 3400c in storage! but now it is time to face the facts: The company has totally lost its way.

I don't know if it's money that corrupted Apple, or blackrock owning a chunk, or Job's death (well that's most certainly a big part of it)... but the bitter truth is: Apple is no more.

Apple in 2024 is a giant lumbering tech conglomerate with a single cash cow, the iPhone, and some auxiliary interesting products it likes to shut down if they don't sell north of 10M units per quarter, no vision for the future except money management and supply chain management. Apple has become a bank.

Xiaomi is making Porsche rip-off EVs, all the other Chinese gadget makers make the coolest cars even Tesla can't compete with - in fact I saw a BYD today with an Apple sticker on the back window. How sad the Apple logo wasn't on the front of the car instead. And Apple releases "too little too late me too" AI... and genmoji... and pregnant men emoji. And they sell a pride wallpaper as innovation (*). It's just sad. 😢

Apple is sitting on 100s of Billions of dollars - they have massive data centers, assembly plants, hordes of engineers - they could be doing everything X is doing, but they lack the vision. They could make a new data center with 100,000 H100s... heck Apple has a kick ass silicon department, they could manufacture their own H100 competitor! They have the money and the means. They're just having a horrible lack of ideas, they don't know why they're on this earth anymore.

RIP.

(*) Prior to this genmoji new low, the lowpoint I thought was hit was when there was an iOS point release and of two features in the release notes, one of them was "A new pride wallaper". How bad is it when a wallpaper is the best thing you can say about your new software? Apple's never before advertised any wallpapers as new features - it's irrelevant after all. So this isn't about pride - couldn't care less - but about the fact that Apple's innovation nowadays consists of wallpapers they commissioned from an artist... while Xiaomi is making cars, and Huawei is making cars and triple-fold phones... wow.

It's much worse if put in perspective with what the competition is doing

X made a 100,000 H100 AI facility. What stopped Apple from doing this - betting on AI? Oh, nothing. They got the money, the engineers, and even in house silicon designers who are some of the best in the world. they just decided Genmoji are more important.

Xiaomi made a Porsche look-alike EV that's better than any Tesla while costing 40k. Not just better, also more luxurious and with better quality materials and construction.

Huawei made a few cars considered the best EVs available in China, a market where there's > 1000 different EV makers at this point. All below 100k.

Apple made $5000 headset nobody asked for, which gives you a headache in an hour. Admittedly, yes, you have to waste some research money, but Apple's main problem is a lack of vision. Maybe that's why they made the Vision - Pro?
