Again WOW looks like factory now, very nice job.

Just used the right tool for the job, even the no-clean flux helped with the chisel tip.

I can’t have all my stations on the desk at the same time and was trying to do with a tip/iron solder that requests a certain type of solder flux.

If I had found my Pace micro-tips and used that from the start…

Wow! Nice job. Big diff...

Maybe I need to dump my Hako station for a pace.... Will it magically give me you soldering skill ;)
You just need practice and the correct tips/flux. I have that for the Pace, not for the Hakko. I like a lot Pace products, but to always get favors from family traveling from the USA to Brazil to get supplies gets tired fast.

I can find Hakko supplies here, don’t love it, but works fine with the correct flux/tips.
[doublepost=1536416698][/doublepost]Btw, my Pace vacuum desoldering station was bought used on eBay and has a Compaq ownership tag. I really love that station.

I do that sometimes with an iron only, but wouldnt risk ripping apart traces on a mac logic board. Good job, finally with the right tools :)

Thats always the way, when you want them, you can't find them, when you don't want them you find them:D had that happen so many times, and you even look in the same place twice hoping you find what your looking for!

I try to be organized, I hate to start doing something then stopping to find a tool/supplies.

It’s like you said, yesterday searching for the tips I found two SD cards and a mag-safe “lost” months ago.

Cleaned the SATA cables, behind that aluminum separator I found a little cockroach:eek:

Installed the board back:

Reconnected everything:

Now just need to reinstall the CPU Tray cage, PCIE fan and battery.

I'm back, baby!

Just a rapid test run, with minimal config. I’m still cleaning the CPU cage fans.

[doublepost=1536441647][/doublepost]Interesting, seems Apple test logic boards like I did, the SMC did not went full crazy mode without intake and exhaust fans.

Fyi: I put together a psu, a logic board, a cpu board and a gpu. No case, no front usb / power on board for a quick test and the thing got up running. Power on by shortening the pon pads.

I tried to do that, but it’s a big risk of damage to the tray, it’s safer to just put it in the case, some screws on the board and the guides of the tray mounted directly on the case.

With 2008, it’s easy to do that.

BTW slightly off topic

but seeing @tsialex findings how the 138.0.0.0.0 firmware still has the old style BootROM version string hidden inside of it

I decided to have a poke around a couple T2 equipped Macs BootROMs and see what was what :)

interestingly much like the MacPro5,1 138.0.0.0.0 the "old money" BootROM string is still there

IMP11.88Z.0064.B77.1808161801 is I think the latest iMac Pro BootROM

and the 15 inch 2018 touch bar is AAPJ680.88Z.0064.B77.1808161802 (AAPJ680 being a hold over from development im guessing :) its also the board name of the iBridge2,4 T2 chip for that Mac)

as to where the New money BootROM version string comes from on T2 chip Macs I think it comes from this plist inside the T2 chips iBridge OS rather then in The BootROM itself like it does for the 138.0.0.0.0 MP5,1 firmware

Just some interesting findings I wanted to post about :)

at some point ill extract the NVMe driver from these BootROMs and try to load them on My MB5,2 for gits and shiggles and see if they Lock up the machine or not

I don't want to flash my SPI memory again, so I'm looking at that chipmunk EasyFlash.

Or maybe get another logic board to desolder the Little Frank and solder some kinar wires to the pads and to a perfboard/DIP SPI.

Every way I look, money goes away ;)

thats why I mentioned MB5,2 rather then MP5,1 :) and as mentioned a few posts back after the lightbulb went "Ding!", I now load em from an EFI shell rather the embed them into the BootROM so if theres a bad driver it should not brick the machine (and should clear on next Reboot but to be safe I do it from the MB5,2 just in case, plus that machine is conveniently on hand without having to take my MP5,1 offline :) )

Yep, loading them as EFI modules will make easier to choose the ones to try on the MP51. But I'm looking at improvements on the base file, FL1100 boot. I still need a fail-safe way to do that.

Hello tsialex

i saw you are using AMD7870 card with mojave and report that working fine , but i have some trouble about the mojave beta, with my Sapphire 7870 card(flashed) , Mac Pro 2009 4,1>5,1 , upgraded to Bottom 138.0.0 already , but overtime when i boot, boot screen show and loading, after a while, screen go off ( not sync up ), and i have to connect a 2nd display via HDMI/DP to make the main display ( DVI) to work again , means, i cannot use single DVI display , do you know why? and any fix of it ? this 7870 card working fine at Sierra & High Sierra , just this strange case under mojave ..

That happens at every beta, Apple only corrects this at the GM. HD 7870 it's not 100% compatible with Hamachi framebuffer, so we have this problem with betas.

Do you know which connector is used?

I have also see this breakout on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/MacBook-J6100-LPC-SPI-Breakout-board/112284476693). I think is really expensive for a PCB board but I can make a similar for cheaper price (in China). But the question is which connector is necessary!

No, we have been searching for the gender reverse Little FRANK for sometime and no one found it yet.

Had to up the heat to 450ºC to get it done.

I found this when modded the front USB ports to USB 3. My Hakko (goes to 420 degrees) wouldn't even heat the 'Apple' solder hot enough to desolder the Native USB 2 ports off. I ended up just ripping them off.

What type of solder does Apple use?

@tsialex

Nice to see the "cleaning/soldering process". Can not stop looking at the photos. We/all else post to few photos. It is very nice to see a clean /"out of the box" clean cMP. Just; thanks!
