Regarding a second GPU for Boot Screen and Mini Displayport:
Do all older GPUs with Mini Displayport, that used to work before Metal requirements, still have a working Mini Displayport under Mojave (in combination with a main Metal card)?
This didn't worked at all with Mojave, but you should test it again with 10.14.5, since Apple changes a lot the Graphics subsystem. Open a thread about it, since this is totally off-topic here.

Exactly the same.
Alex,
1. got a Asus RX570 4 GB just today; my bootrom now is 140.0.0.0.0
2. downloaded Mojave from the App Store; got the window "upgrade firmware"
3. Let the Mojave installer shut down computer
4. Power button, holding it till long beep; straight after that the chime; I let go of power button
5. waited 30 min (I see no screen, obviously), but no restart

Should I, after shutdown, change the RX 570 back to ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB just to be able to see the progress on the firmware update? Or leave the Asus RX 570 still in place (I'm still on Bootrom 140.0.0.0.0)?
MacOS High Sierra is installed on NVMe 970 Pro; still got Samsung SSD SATA 500GB (not in use)

I bet this has nothing to do with the GPU. Using a HD 5770 probably won't help you since efiflasher don't show anything while flashing anymore and depends on METAL.

The fail-proof way to upgrade a MP5,1 firmware is to fully erase a SATA drive, install High Sierra 10.13.6 to it, download 10.14.5 full installer, clear the NVRAM 3 times and then you try to upgrade the firmware running the Mojave full installer.

See this thread Updating my MacPro 5.1 from 140.0.0.0.0 to 144.0.0.0.0 does not work

Alex, Boa Tarde ... Thanks for the quick reply. How stupid of me, I could have found that as well, but with so many threads on the forum, it easy to overlook. Thanks again, for taking the time to reply. For me you're THE source of all knowledge ... lol

I am beating my head against a wall.. I have tried everything I can think of... New motherboard as old one died.

Installed Fresh copy of Sierra on SATA SSD. Did updates and apple store wont let me download High Sierra. I manually downloaded High Sierra to a USB. Tried plugging in usb and running installer from the OS and I just get the spinning pin wheel of death. I have tried multiple different USB drives with the High Sierra image. I get the screen saying it needs to update firmware, when I hit the shutdown button nothing ever happens. It will never shutdown. I just get the pinwheel of death. I have tried resetting PRAM, tried two different processors in case it was a processor check issue etc. I have already upgraded from 4,1 to 5,1. Just trying to get to 1.40 or higher for firmware. I have also tried using the USB High Sierra installer holding the command button down on the keyboard and boot that way. Again, I get the pinwheel when I hit shutdown to upgrade firmware. Nothing ever happens.

SMC: 1.39f5 for processor tray and motherboard. Current firmware is MP51DD7fb03

Use installinstallmacos.py to download High Sierra, select number 2: https://github.com/munki/macadmin-scripts

Required me to download something first from the App Store. Once I downloaded an app it downloaded High Sierra fine and I was able to install the firmware update. It's the simple things... Thanks again tsiAlex!

Rather baffled here. Successfully upgraded to High Sierra on SSD, Mac Pro 5.1. AMD Radeon R9 270X, says it is metal compatible. Upgraded to Mojave, boot rom 144.0.0.0. Won't boot into Mojave, stays on boot screen, then goes black. On taking out the SSD and trying it in laptop, it successfully boots into Mojave. So it appears the SSD has upgraded to 10.14.5, the boot ROM is correct, but the supposed compatible graphics card seems to be stopping it. Any ideas? Or buy a new graphics card?

It's the GPU, R9 270X is not supported past High Sierra.

Apple changed AMD GCN1.0 drivers after High Sierra and introduced some incompatibility with 3rd party cards that uses the same Curacao GPU. Some R9 380/380x cards with Antigua GPUs don't work past High Sierra too.

Thanks so much, tsialex, for your detailed knowledge. That saves me a lot of head scratching and futile attempts to make it work. I will look at getting a new card, maybe the GT630.

If I was on the market for a GPU today, I'd look at RX 560 or an used RX 570/RX 580.

NVIDIA GPUs are not a wise choice now, Apple is not giving enough attention to the Mojave native NVIDIA drivers.

I would really appreciate any guidance available from the various very informed people here.

For some time now I have been using an unflashed Nvidia gtx 670 (so no apple screen at start up) under 10.12.6, on a cMP 5.1 3.46 6 core, with amfeltec squid gen 2 using kingston pcie ahci ssd blades as the boot drive.

Trying to upgrade meant first getting to 10.13.6. I got caught in a 'update your firmware' 'loop'. Then another 'loop' for a 'helper tool'.

I thought I had progressed when:
(a) I removed all other pcie cards
(b) put in a gt120 card to get past the firmware loop/helper tool loop
(c) did a clean install of 10.13.6 on another ssd in SATA bay 1(? the one nearest the power on button)

From then on I could repeatedly boot 10.13.6 from the bay 1 ssd, with the gtx 670 for graphics. I have MP51.0089.B00, and I get the start up chime.

Then I cloned the contents of the SATA-ssd0 to the amfeltec/kingston combo which I hoped would again be the boot drive.

The first boot works with the amfeltec/kingston combo. But if I shut down and try to reboot again, I get a blank screen, no chime, and the blank screen remains.

I must have done something wrong or missed something. Do I need to provide more diagnostic information?

Does it help in any way if I install just the latest firmware for the 5.1 (144?.....)

Other stuff that MAY be of interest help.
-In the profiler for the 670 it says: metal support, feature set mac os gpu family1 v3
-In the profiler 6 items are listed for pci: the 670 in slot 1, 1 'audio device'/card ALSO in slot 1, but in that case the driver is not installed (???), 4 AHCI controllers all in slot 2 (with driver installation confirmed - I guess these are the 4 memory sticks and associated amfeltec board 'stuff'?).

Thanks very much in any case.
Alan

The first problem is that Apple did not yet support APFS with RAID arrays, even on Catalina. If you want to stay with High Sierra, you still can use a HFS+ RAID array for booting, just read about startosinstall. For Mojave, Apple removed the possibility of using HFS+ on the system drive. Read the Mojave on RAID with APFS - a HOWTO thread, this is off topic here.

144.0.0.0.0 won't make a difference with RAID arrays, but you should upgrade to it - just use the first post instructions with a SATA drive installed on the native Mac Pro SATA ports. Don't forget to read the GTX 680 note, same process needed for a GTX 670 or any Kepler NVIDIA GPU.
