If I remember correctly, some very old, 2008ish, Initio USB2.0-to-SATA bridges are not compatible/supported after the security changes that Apple started to implement with High Sierra, maybe it's your problem.May I discuss another APFS problem here? Since High Sierra my USB/Esata hub from Sharkoon (QuickportPro) where I can mount my old disks is not seeing them anymore, I have to boot into Sierra to mount them, any idea?
Some PCIe SATA controllers are not supported anymore too, several E-SATA and USB+E-SATA cards stopped working around Sierra. I have a Sonnet one that only works reliably up to 10.11 and don't work anymore after Sierra. Thanks Alex, I have a lot of old drives, even SCSI ....wish I could at least mount and backup the SATA ones. For the hub I have a PCI E-SATA card, maybe thats the problem, but since these hubs ( and I have 2 different ones) also have USB2+3 and even with those its not mounting, I am wondering what to get.
If your Mac Pro is not working correctly, trying to upgrade the firmware has a very good chance to end with a brick.Wondering if anyone has some advice for me here.
Background: Have a Mid 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 on Sierra 10.12.6. I want to upgrade to Mojave. I already have a Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition card so I'm good to go there. Booting from an SSD so no problems there either.
Problem: I have occasional random power glitches at my house. I have 2 UPSes and the smaller one will occasionally make a buzzing sound and I'll look over and the LCD will be on and it will read like 143V instead of 116-118V like normal.
My other bigger UPS was an APC SMT1500 but it was old and started to have problems recognizing the battery. I bought a new battery but it still didn't see it. Eventually I replaced it (with a newer SMT1000) and everything's running fine now, but there were a few dicey months where I was running with the bad/old APC unit so when a power glitch would hit, it would take everything down including the Mac.
After a few of those power hits, my Mac Pro started getting real cranky. Sometimes after a glitch and power off the Mac would not come back on. I would have to disconnect the power plug for a few hours and then it would reboot after that.
So, here's the present state: when I power the Mac on normally, I hear a slight *click* sound to start off and then after a few seconds I hear the fans spin up and the white power light comes on and I get the chime. (Also, restarting without powering off works fine.)
I tried to run the latest High Sierra 10.13.6 installer to get the firmware update (at least the first of 'em) but when it installs and shuts the machine down, when I press and hold the power button I hear the *click* but instead of the screen coming on and the firmware update starting up, after a couple of seconds the Mac just shuts itself off again.
(Just like how when you force shutdown by pressing and holding the power button while it's running until it shuts off.)
I can't seem to get past this point.
Next I tried installing the OfficialAPFSFWUpdate.zip package from dosdude1's site, but after it installed it did not shut the machine down (or reboot into the firmware installer). I manually did a Shut Down after that but again, holding in the power button as I turned it on just got me another auto-shutoff after several seconds of doing that.
Is there any hope or should I assume the hardware isn't capable of booting into the firmware updater anymore and give up? (I'm going to replace this rig with a Mac mini + eGPU setup sometime next year, but it would be nice to be able to get up on Mojave before I do that.)
Installed it. Everything’s fine.Security Update 2020-003 10.14.6 : any problems?
Airdrop Continuity Handoff ok?
No. It's better to search the Mojave forum or the Audio forum. One more question: I notice a certain sluggishness in Mojave. For instance if I click in apps like Logic or Cubase in the menue there is a slow response. Any idea what that could be?
No, firmware updates with MP5,1 are manual, you have to shutdown and enter firmware programming mode, pay attention to what the Mojave installer says.Howdy folks. Im a bit of a hobbyist. I just purchased a mid 2012 mac pro that had Sierra pre installed on it I plan to put Mojave on it. I updated Firmware to MP51.0089.B00 and installed High Sierra as i have read is the procedure. No problems. I have an RX580 Saphire Pulse ready to go into it ( waiting on power cable ) I want to make sure i do the next steps properly.
My understanding is i install graphics card. Boot up computer and download Mojave from App store ( already downloaded ). Then start install.
Questions:
Will it automatically do the firmware update that is needed for Mojave 144.0.0.0.0 ?
Please re-read the first post, this is explained there. You can install to another disk, just select the desired one when the installer asks where you want to install. Can i install Mojave to blank disk ? I have a second drive installed in system that i want Mojave on. I would like to keep my High Sierra drive. Cant remember if there is an option to select where to install if there are multiple drives.
Mojave only install to APFS disks. Will it automatically format to APFS on blank drive ?
Just to be clear this is the same process that i did for High Sierra , correct ? Shut down, hold power button till light flashes and you get the long tone ?No, firmware updates with MP5,1 are manual, you have to shutdown and enter firmware programming mode, pay attention to what the Mojave installer says.
Yes.Just to be clear this is the same process that i did for High Sierra , correct ? Shut down, hold power button till light flashes and you get the long tone ?
Alex, I tried running AHT and it stopped with an error pretty quickly. If your Mac Pro is not working correctly, trying to upgrade the firmware has a very good chance to end with a brick.
Diagnose, with AHT + ASD, and repair it first.
Install an Apple OEM GPU, it's a requirement for AHT/ASD.Alex, I tried running AHT and it stopped with an error pretty quickly.
When I Googled the error the hits from other people who had the same exact error code were for posts saying that it was a temperature sensor on the AMD RADEON Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition card, which is the same card I have. They said it was a false positive because AHT pre-dates the 7950 card. Unfortunately AHT won't go beyond that first error so I have no way of getting it to completion to see if it finds any other issues.
I ran ASD from Activity Monitor. Now I have a sysdiagnose_2020.06.08_02-52-18-0700.tar.gz file.
Now what? Call Apple and say "Hey I have an ASD output file for you, oh yeah it's for a Mac Pro 5,1 and AppleCare on it expired in 2012"?
That's not ASD. ASD works like AHT, you have to boot into it.I ran ASD from Activity Monitor. Now I have a sysdiagnose_2020.06.08_02-52-18-0700.tar.gz file.

OK, I see the macintoshrepository references to ASD and I grabbed whatever was linked to for "November 2011 Mac Pro (Mid 2010)". Thanks h9826790.That's not ASD. ASD works like AHT, you have to boot into it.
Ah OK, thanks. Well my trusty old ATi RADEON HD 5770 is covered in dust, this could be amusing ...Install an Apple OEM GPU, it's a requirement for AHT/ASD.
You should prepared the USB thumb drive as per the instruction that contain BOTH ASD EFI and ASD OS.OK, I see the macintoshrepository references to ASD and I grabbed whatever was linked to for "November 2011 Mac Pro (Mid 2010)". Thanks h9826790.
Edit: Is the "ASD (EFI)" version (presumably copied to a USB stick) preferred over the "ASD (OS)" one?

Solve your hardware problems before trying to upgrade your BootROM. If you have any problems during the firmware upgrade process you will have a dead Mac.Hi, a real newbie here.
I have a 5,1 and are running 10.13.6 and bootrom MP51.0089.B00 on a 120GB SSD located in Bay1.
I have a few problems at the moment.
- the monitor flickers every now and then (I have a original HD 5770 installed)
- the computer has shut down a few times without any direct explanation (don´t know how to interpret the log)
I was planing to upgrade to Mojave to check if the above problems disappear and was looking into what the requirements were. Since I could get a hold of a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 570 4GB I thought I could try with this, although it says it might not be compatible.
Before attempting the upgrade I connected the RX 570 with dual 6pin to 8pin power in PCI slot 1 but I could not get any picture, only Black Screen. The fans on the RX 570 did not spin either so my first thought was that the fans were broken...but shouldn´t I be able to get a picture even if the fans were not working correctly? I connected it to PCI slot 2 but no difference. The monitor I´m using is working with DVI on the older HD 5770 so Im guessing its not cable or faulty monitor.
I connected the HD 5770 in slot 1 and the RX 570 in slot 2 (only connecting 1 of the 2 6pin to the baseboard to make available the power for HD 5770). This allow me to return to the starting point but with the RX 570 in slot 2. Looking in system-report I only see the HD 5770 card.
I´m thinking that either the card is broken but would have worked as intended above, OR the card would not have worked regardless.
I did see another user do this installation but with another brand RX570: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/success-installing-a-rx570-in-5-1-cmp-with-mojave.2173307/
Thankful for any pointers.

Nothing you wrote above will be solved by a firmware upgrade.
RX 570 Nitro+ is not exactly compatible, too big and uses a lot of power, but it's known to work.Thank you, let´s say I did not have any of the above problems. What would be next step?
A trusted metal supported graphics-card?
