I am just thinking, what are we really trying to do here? Reverse engineer a laptop? Don't get me wrong, I love my iPad, but I also love my Macs. I will definitely try this new computing paradigm, but I still have my doubts that this is the correct way to go in the future.
Do we know how much the magic keyboard weighs? Apple doesn't mention anything about it: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP817?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I think it's in the flexibility/versatility. Instead of having 3 devices that do 3 distinct things, we have 1 device that connects to 3 accessories to enable the same things. The accessories are cheaper, smaller, etc.

This case is very clearly designed to be detached from all the time for when you want to annotate/take notes/play games/browse content casually.

This case is for typing, productivity, etc.

And the thing is, the software keeps up with it all. Unlike on a Microsoft Surface, where the software is mostly desktop-based and horrible for tablet use, and there isn't a good ecosystem of apps that really take advantage of all the hardware.

I would say that Apple is creating the world's most versatile computing device, while it is Microsoft who are reverse-engineering the traditional laptop.

As for the weight, this guy has a good guess: Weighing in as an Apple pundit - All this

Seems The main hinge doesn’t do 90 degrees :( At least you can get iPad 90 degrees with the second hinge

Thanks. Looks good but indeed quite bulky. I’ve got the folio and other Smart Keyboard so this will be another option depending on mood!

It also doesn’t really lift the iPad screen a lot higher, which is what I was hoping for. Ergonomically, for me, the iPad is just too low for long use on a desk, I’ve been testing my wife’s 12.9 gen 2 (touch ID version) with a bluetooth magic keyboard and a bluetooth magic mouse, and my neck is complaining fiercely. Obviously your mileage may vary.

I love the look of the viewing angles for me better than what we currently have. Keyboard wise and backlit is going to be awesome.

In a strange turn of events, I've decided that I'm going to be returning my 11" Magic Keyboard and upgrading my whole setup to a 12.9" 2020 model with 12.9" Magic Keyboard. So when my 11" keyboard gets here this week, it's going right back to Apple, and the waiting game starts over again for my new gear. :(

I did the same thing as you. I could have had my 11 inch keyboard shipped by now, but oh well. My 12.9 iPad arrives today and the 11 inch will go back first thing Monday. When the keyboard will arrive is up in the air. I'm in the 4/27-5/4 group.

What made you guys change from the 11 to 12.9 inch? I was debating for ages and read a lot about the differences. Just taken delivery of the 11 and it actually feels a lot better than the 10.5 funnily!

I have had all of the smaller Pros. 11“ is the best. In the shop I was amazed how good the 12.9 felt but given I use mine a lot for notes and as a companion device walking around a school I need the smaller (11”) device. Would love to have both though!

I have a dongle for connecting to a screen and there is also this new app (shiftscreen) which helps with multi windows and screen resolution.

What made you decide this?

I had the original 12.9 inch Pro and now have the 11. my Hope if for this to be a modular computer of sorts - I can use it as a tablet, with the magic keyboard as a small laptop, and hopefully in the future with iOS 14 full external display supports also as a desktop. The 12.9 is great, but only really realistically used on the desk. The 11” feels like a much more versatile device.

That 12.9 version looks awesome. Want it.

So then we are going to have the iPad vs Air wars, which is absurd, but gives people something to do.
