I just find it funny that Apple chose to call this MagSafe. MagSafe was introduced to prevent MacBooks from being ripped off of a table if someone tripped on the cord. Wireless charging is already safe. If anything, the magnet attached makes the phone more likely to be torn off a table if someone trips on the cord of this new charger.

Apple makes really weird choices sometimes.

I’m a bit confused about Magsafe, are we getting both magsafe and the regular lightning charging way? If yes, why?

To first introduce a different charging way that's as convenient as a cable, so that next year they can remove the lightning port alltogether.

I wonder why they kept both now that you can charge and use the phone like normal with magsafe, maybe for backups but then again I’m sure in the near future Iphones will no longer have any ports
Transition. Apple will go portless eventually, but cannot do abrupt changes like that. I do expect next year's iPhone to not include the cable anymore. So the box will just contain the phone. Everything else you have to buy separately. Seems like that's the way Apple do business now.

I expect the SIM ejector to be sold separately as well for $5.

One step closer tp removing the port...15w charging says to me next year no port and you just use the MagSafe.

Apple seems to like rebranding their old brands that were used to be for Macs.
iSight was Apple's brand for webcams on the Mac, then reused as a brand for the iPhone's camera for a short while.

The "why" is $$. Apple stands to make much more money selling everyone $40 MagSafe chargers for this year and next as a luxury item, then the following year they can swap it when their production costs for MagSafe near zero and throw a cable in the box. That plus their software is not anywhere near stable enough this year to consider not having a hard reset available :D

I just don't want to use old iPhone chargers to the brand new shiny iPhone. I know third world problem lol. OCD is kicking in...

Feels like I'm going to be buying a brand new car with old tires or old battery in it LOL.
Wierd, I never even used the apple provided charger brick on my phone, always been on wireless charging that I have from Anker.

This might be a really dumb question but will the MagSafe charger magnetically "click" with the new iPhones if they're using third-party cases?

The iPhone 12 already has magnets inside of it so what would be the advantage of owning an Apple case with magnets over cases with no magnets?

...you mean $50, right?

Anyone been able to find out how long the MagSafe cable is, looked everywhere lol 🥺

really can’t stand apples 1m cables they fall off the desk so easily, better be 2m.
Probably won’t matter much. Anker and other quality cable companies will fill the void as they have with Lightning and USB-C cables of many lengths. I’ve been surprised how many times I’ve used my 10 ft. charging cable.

Probably because Apple is dumping the lightning port in a year or 2.

My question is what will the carplay solution be when that happens.

I wonder if the charger is heavy enough to stay on a desk? Im sure people will be taping it down eventually. lol

How do the current wireless chargers cope when the phone is in a case. Do you have to remove it form the case?

So if its a single cable with Lightning one end and USB-C at the other, how do we plug into a USB socket to charge?

You have to buy the apple usb-c power brick, of course.

And I’m annoyed by this too. I do have a million old USB bricks. I don’t need any more of those. But not USB C. It would’ve been nice if they had waited a couple years before they quit including them.

Hard to say without having devices in the wild. The hold of magnets through a case will be weaker due to distance. How much weaker depends on the thickness of the case, and the specifics of the magnets. It’s likely that Apple’s cases include magnets to ensure a good hold for any chargers or wallet used with their cases. It’s also likely these magnets are very thin, meaning they might not work very well without being in almost direct contact.

Belkin’s car mount/charger relies on the magnets to hold onto the phone, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a phone in a case without magnets won’t stay put.

If it’s anything like the watch charger, no. It won’t be long until you see stuff like this floating around to turn the charger into a stand or something though: https://www.elevationlab.com/products/night-stand?variant=1198364437

The Apple case has magnets so you can attach the charger or the wallet. I guess it uses the magnets to help stay on. At lest I think they keep playing up how it clicks on.
To me the MagSafe stuff seems gimmicky and cheapens the iPhone. It’s like something a to attract attention because it can’t do anything to stand on its own.

I'm interested in how strong the magnetic attraction is between Apple's MagSafe charging disc and the iPhone 12 itself. Will it be reasonably possible to pick up the phone from the charging disc one-handed, or is it gonna be more like "hold down the charging disc and pry the phone off of it"? I honestly thought they'd have some clever wizardry like an electromagnet that would turn off the attraction when the phone sensed motion whilst in wireless charging mode, so you could more easily pick it up. But then that wouldn't work when the phone's in a MagSafe case.

The good news for me is that I want a Pro Max, so I can wait for everyone's impressions of the regular 12/12 Pro and hopefully get answers to these questions before I pre-order. :)

My speculation is that the magnets are thin enough that cases without magnets won’t work that well with MagSafe chargers or mounts.

It helps address a couple real issues with wireless charging. Mis-aligned coils can reduce efficiency, or flat out prevent charging. I’ve seen enough folks complain about waking up to a flat battery because the phone wasn’t on the charging pad quite right, and experienced it myself. But even if you do get a charge, it doesn’t mean the coils are aligned for the best use of electricity. If you do use wireless charging on an iPhone today, you are wasting some power to mis-alignment. Wireless charging may not be nearly as efficient as a cable, but stuff like this can cut down on the waste.

Apple’s not even the first to think of using magnets to align the charging coils for better efficiencies and eliminating the possibility of not charging. But they are taking the next step by making it work with non-charging accessories as well, which I think is a smart move.

So far I think there are only 2 car manufactures that have wireless CarPlay and people aren't going to trade in a car for wireless CarPlay so I expect it will be a while before the port disappears. Maybe a MagSafe type wireless to wired connection might work and also for full backups etc.

In few years it’s only eSIM
