I hadn’t heard anything back from Apple support, so I decided to call in. The advisor (3rd one) told me I had a call scheduled for 5 pm today about the response from engineering. She told me she could give me the response.

She said it’s a known issue that will be fixed in a future update, but she couldn’t say which update as Apple has been really busy fixing bugs. I asked if that meant some version of iOS 18 or iOS 19 and she couldn’t say. She did say the problem is with the Mail app.

Basically Apple is aware Mail in iOS is broken, but there is no ETA on fixing it.

I have no idea why the first advisor I spoke to strung me along for over a month.

Thanks for persevering with this Morac and keeping us all in the loop!

Mail app is a mess. Always running in the background and burning battery (I have tried every "fix" and none work) Fetch is off and everything set to manual. Notifications don't work; I download emails and there is no indicator even though I have 20+ unread emails...also, same email gets downloaded multiple times.

Ok, i'll stay on 17.7.2 - at least - over the holidays.
Simply can't accept being cutoff by a messy, buggy mail app.

Thanks for everyone trying to notify Apple of this issue. Hopefully it is finally going to get fixed a soon to be released future update.

In the meantime between this Mail issue and the Photos app mess, I think I'll stick with iOS 17 for awhile longer.

Yeah this issue is a pain in the ass. Since I got my iPhone 16 Pro Max and installed IOS 18, my mail is broken…used to push and fetch. Won’t do either now. I have to manually go in to get mail and it takes forever to download the new messages. Come on Apple figure this out.

The working Mail update will come installed on the new iPhone 17 pro...

but even then you'll need more than 1TB storage for it work properly

😈

Not fixed for me either on both iPhone and iPad. Extremely disappointed. Ridiculous nearing 4 months since iOS 18 was released and this is still not resolved.

Its fixed for me.

I completely removed my Google account from my iPhone. Rebooted the phone (not sure if this was needed, but it is what i did) and then reinstall my Google account. Now it syncs without any issues

Thank you for your suggestion. I followed your steps and unfortunately it does not seem to solve the problem for me on either my iPhone or iPad. This is on an old Cox email account that was transitioned to Yahoo so I guess you can say it’s now a Yahoo account. I guess I wait until 18.3.

Yep, I agree, it's definitely worse than 18.2 for me too. It was fine in 18.1. I wonder if 18.3 beta 2 is any better?

My issue wis with iCloud Mail, the Gmail account is actually fine.

Anything inbound with a medium-size attachment just says “click to download”. Clicking does nothing. If I force-close the app a few times, it downloads. Old emails in Trash also no longer auto-delete after x days.

IMAP on my own email server.

Kind of thinking this doesn’t get fixed at all the way things are going. I mean it’s pretty fundamental functionality for the mail app and yet no resolution in several updates…

My latest iOS Mail experience: I was expecting an important email but never saw it come in on my locked phone or iPad (no Lock Screen alerts). I went to my desktop and found the email had come in 15 minutes earlier. Went back to my phone and as soon as I unlocked it, the drop down alert appeared as well as the new mail sound. This sort of non-somewhat-arbtirary notification crap has happened ever since iOS18 was released. On my iPad, I can't get Lock Screen notifications be anything other than "by app". They cannot appear in List view no matter how I change settings, restarts, stand on my head, etc.
Really effective.
So intelligent.
Maybe spend less time on genmoji stupidity and more on fixing bugs?

Came here to make a post and found this thread on the first page. I have a gmail and an iCloud email in the mail app. The App never downloads or properly badges my mail. When I go in after a few hours, I invariably find that I have about a dozen or more emails, and I seemingly need to pull and refresh a bunch of times for each mailbox/category to get them all to download. Maddening.

Hoping this is fixed on 18.3. Private relay is broke.

Apple mail sort feature is also broke, trying to sort your mail for you with no ability to disable this is not good. And no disabling in the mail app does not totally disable the sort feature, it’s still trying to sort all emails that are incoming and label them.

Lately I’ve also gotten errors with iCloud Mail that persist until the app is killed and restarted. That’s in addition to Yahoo Mail not downloading in the background.

The entire Mail app is a buggy mess. I don’t even know how they managed to screw it up as this happened before they added the category changes.

IMAP stopped working for my personal mail server. I can see the E-Mail in Outlook on my desktop, but Mail on my iPhone, which was working, now will not download the message. Running the latest 18.3 dev that just came out.

At this point I’m assuming Mail won’t be fixed until iOS 19 if ever.
You may be right.

A mess. 4+ hours of background activity so far this morning...no badges...emails not downloading or downloading multiple times
