Nice! I suspect that would be great for states like New Jersey or most of Oregon where customers aren't allowed to pump their own gas, but I doubt it would happen. Personally, I think it took way too long, especially since it wasn't an overnight decision and would have to be done eventually. Even back in 2014, I was using Apple Pay on the gas pumps at Meijer as they had installed them chainwide at one point, presumably as their store card had contactless. Even with this (or contact EMV at least) being on the horizon for years, it's kind of ridiculous how many places have dragged their feet.
Yes it's ridiculous some of the gas station have had the reader for years but not enabled. At least Sheetz and Wawa work consistently now

Gas stations actually had somewhat of a good reason to take so long, though. There simply wasn't software available for most of the new pumps/readers in the first place, hence why even the networks were okay with delaying the fuel pump EMV liability shift twice more to 2021.

On the other hand, I see a lot of ATMs with contactless readers that simply aren't enabled at all (pretty much every credit union's, for example) or only work with the bank's own cards. I'm not even sure there are any technical reasons for that at this point given that contactless on ATMs supposedly works in other countries; they could just be not bothering for the US since "cashless society" and all.

It’d be great, the problem is that even in those states the card readers are on the pumps. It looks like those gas stations became self-service at some point and later went back to being staffed.

No I think there may be other reasons to disable the contactless on atms. Mexico uses cash more than any other country in the world, yet almost every single ATM in the country that has a contactless reader has it disabled and even the one that didn’t still gave an error message every time upon tapping. One bank, citibanamex, has even covered the contactless readers on all its atms with a sticker pointing to the chip card slot.

The last time I was in Oregon, the pumps didn't work unless a code was entered, which then allowed the attendant to swipe your card on the reader and pump the gas. In some areas in Oregon, they've since started allowing it, but it's still banned in the Portland area and some of the other cities (last I checked). New Jersey is still entirely banned and it looks like both states haven't really budged otherwise since the 1949-1951. I'm guessing that they're getting pumps installed that are like any other state, just with a software lock to prevent someone from driving up and using it themselves (hence the same readers).

What's the camera for? Are they going to be supporting PayPal or something, too?

EDIT: I had to mail something today and it seems that my local post office has them now (and contactless works, too).
Now, when will the Kiosk have their little Ingenico reader enabled for contactless? I hope soon as well.

Looks like the pinpad offers the option to scan QR codes. The camera has a tiny QR icon right next to it.

I figured that much. There's not exactly many QR payment options that are well known enough to go with, though, hence PayPal being the first thought.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had to switch those out to Verifone first, even though they don't strictly need to do that.

They wouldn’t be the first to do it. For some strange reason many merchants wait until they upgrade pinpads to enable contactless despite that it isn’t necessary at all. I saw it happen in Mexico too: Costco Mexico, for example, never enabled contactless until they upgraded from the old verifone vx820s they used to have to the newer mx925s they now have, despite that the vx820s were perfectly capable of accepting contactless payments. Same with Office Depot Mexico: only a couple of their stores using newer verifone mx925 pinpads are accepting contactless payments, while the rest using older ingenico ipp320s still don’t, despite that the ingenico ipp320 is perfectly capable of accepting contactless payments.

It’s the fun world of EMV certifications.

It’s a huge company operating in many countries, yet they don’t accept it anywhere but Canada.

Asda started accepting contactless before Walmart downgraded their ownership last year, too. Though that might have needed to be mandated by the card networks as well.

AMC now has contactless so you can take that off the not accepted list. And more Post Offices are adding contactless as well.
But whenever I read the AMC emails/notifications, it references in the app. Has anyone able to use it at a reader in the theater?

Apparently, Wawa isn't consistent yet. Went to one we don't go to, and when I tapped, only the second light went on, and it gave an error. I wish they would just cover them with a sign if it still doesn't work

Got gas today at QuickTrip... Pay at the pump... easy-peasy...
QuickTrip or QuikTrip? or Kwik-Trip? They're all different companies! The QuikTrip variant charges the Apple Card to the max, and then releases it 4-5 days later, not happy with them. They are the only gas station to do this too, every other one, releases the hold by the time I hang up the pump.

Apple Pay is trending on twitter because Wal-mart won't accept it.
Sad when I literally use Apple Pay everywhere else, to the point where I don't bother really carrying my wallet anymore. Walmart and Kroger are the only times I have to, UGGH!

Literally, even my police department, city court, DMV, and transit agency takes Apple Pay. When the government is far ahead of you, you know its getting bad and very sad.

Yeah yeah yeah Walmart Pay, ugh. I want to use Apple Pay so I can spend my Apple Cash at Walmart if I wanted to, as well.

Walmart will never accept apple pay until they get cornered to choose between enabling contactless or going cash only, which seems to have been the case in Canada -the only country where Walmart does have contactless enabled- due to a card networks mandate. It’ll take another 8-10 years before it happens in the US, though, as that’s how long it will take to completely abandon magnetic stripes there, which needs to happen before the networks can mandate contactless.

Got gas twice today - wife’s car and my truck at QuikTrip. Both transactions show ‘pending’ for the exact amount of the purchase, and did so within minutes. No hold.

I have also seen plenty of people use Walmart Pay at my local Walmart. I have to admit, it isn't too bad, at least compared to Kroger Pay. Kroger Pay is the worst, works only half the time if you're lucky, and doesn't even work in the whole store (like it isn't supported for the gas station, or the Starbucks inside the store). At least Walmart is consistent with it, and it ties in well with the app.
