Are self serve checkouts like these common in the US?

These have been in most supermarkets in the UK since around 2009 and have increased even more so since covid. I usually self scan items and bag up as I go around the store, upload the total on these via a QR code that you scan with the hand held scanner, than ApplePay on the terminal. Makes shopping so much easier.
I shop at Walmart like this. I scan my items in the app and bag up as I go. Once I’m finished shopping, I go to self checkout, scan the QR code and pay through the walmart app.

Yes. These self-checkout areas are common in the supermarkets of USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The only difference is the use of the NFC between physical cards and mobile wallets by the card machines.

The card machines in the UK and Ireland work differently than other countries for NFC contactless payments.

In 2023, the contactless limit costs for UK is £100 and in Ireland is €50.

A person can not use his bank card for contactless payment if their transactions are over these numbers but they can still use Apple Pay and other mobile wallets. The person would need to insert the bank card to the card machine and enter the PIN number.

This is because the card machine locks the NFC for physical cards if the transaction costs are over these numbers but not for the NFC of mobile phones and smart watches.

This shows you that the NFC for physical cards are different from NFC from mobile phones and smart watches.

yes almost every supermarket in the US has self checkout just like that. It’s also starting to become increasingly common in Mexico.

It is also common in Canada.

Here is YouTube video of Metro supermarket in Canada with self-service checkout from March 2023.

Yep Kroger has rolled out contactless to all locations so I will update the wiki when I get home. Done.

@dontwalkhand mentioned to me that the Fry's in downtown Phoenix and in Scottsdale had it turned on today.
I was out and about today, so I spent some time ISO Fry's w ApplePay turned on... tried two in Peoria (western suburb) and one in north Phoenix -- none had it turned on... maybe they're rolling it out behind me checking. :D

Will continue checking the opportunity presents itself.

I’m in the West Valley and I suspect it may not be switched on yet in my neck of the woods. I’ll report back this week! Stay tuned…..

Stopped at a Fry's in north Phoenix and Apple Pay worked... shopped in the grocery and the Apple Pay notification said "Fry's Fuel Center"... #takeTheWin
Yet, it’s still not turned on in their app for grocery pickup! Half win maybe?

100% win I’d say. The announcement was about turning on contactless at Kroger and affilates’ physical stores, not about accepting apple pay online in their apps and/or websites. The latter might still take a while longer.

Went to my regular Fry's today... one of the stores that wasn't working on Monday... used Apple Pay, no problems... and the Apple Card reported the transaction at "Fry's Food Stores"... life as it should be.

They probably even can get rid of “Food Stores” from their branding now since Fry’s electronics is now dead and there wont be anymore confusion.

They do offer Fry's Fuel Centers... and Fry's Pharmacy... plus there's the whole web domain thing and rebranding... not sure Kroger wants to spend that kind of money... but, who knows...

But I bet it was via a QR or app. US restaurants usually refuse to process payments at the table using wireless card readers. They’ll do anything but that.
No it was a terminal at the register in the lobby. Wasn't there the time we went before that.
