Could anyone tell me how to boot into Safe Mode when using OpenCore?

I've been getting random freezes (beach balls) at times over the past two weeks. Things that should be instant, like opening a browser tab, can take 30 seconds (though often works normally). CPU activity during the freezes is low - it's like it's waiting for something. The Finder isn't locked up - windows can be moved around etc. - but the pauses seems to affect all the running applications.

Also, the login screen after waking from sleep frequently locks up after I've entered a couple of characters of my password, requiring a reboot. Usually there's a crash report afterwards that references the WindowServer, but it doesn't seem to identify any particular process as having caused the WS to crash.

The system log contains regular AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent 'AMMuxedDeviceDisconnected' notices (about every 5 seconds). I tried quitting the AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent, which naturally stopped the messages, but still had the login screen issue afterwards, so it's probably irrelevant.

This is usually caused by the RTC being stuck, start checking the RTC battery, replace the BR2032 battery for a new one of the same model (CR2032 chemistry can't be used with the temperatures below the GPU) if the voltage is below 3.00V.

After checking the RTC voltage, upgrade to 11.6.8 and current OC (or OCLP) releases. If you still have the KPs after the RTC and everything is already updated, then you probably need to check your BootROM.

I tried the Brigadier step-by-step and the install said it was for Windows 7. Probably for the best because I read up on other people issues. I went into the drivers folder and got the Bluetooth driver installed. I don't have any Bluetooth devices so I'm not sure if it's working. I downloaded the graphics card driver and software from AMD's support page for my RX 580 card. Is there anything else I need to do to be sure things like the CPU fan speed and what not are going to work correctly in Windows 10 on my 5,1?
Use Device Manager to check if any other devices are missing drivers. If your Bluetooth module has been updated, make sure to get the driver from the Boot Camp package for a Mac with that module (iMac15,1 for example). In my case, the only component that I got from the MacPro5,1 Boot Camp package was the Realtek software (Vista installer) to get the internal speaker working.

Two ways:
  1. Add -x to your boot arguments and reboot
  2. From the OpenCore boot picker, select your macOS volume with Shift+Enter

Thanks. I tried option 2 but the Mac just reboots back to the picker.

Sorry if a dumb question, but how do you 'add -x to your boot arguments'? Is this in config.plist?

Edit: I assume within:

<key>boot-args</key>
<string>-x</string>

(obviously with other stuff in the string section).

Given that you're using Martin's package, then, yes, you would append -x to the current list of boot arguments (separated by a space) in the config file. To see where boot arguments are added in the config file see the subsection Clean up the NVRAM in post #1 (note that in your case, you'll have more than just the -no_compat_check boot argument shown in the guide).

I added -x and it resulted in the same issue as when I start with Shift+Enter - just reboots back to the picker. So it seems Safe Mode doesn't work on my machine for some reason, which complicates troubleshooting.

Luckily I also have Windows installed, so mounted the EFI partition with Diskpart, then opened with Explorer++ to edit config.plist and get back to macOS...

By the way - I have 3 screens. When using Recovery I need to disconnect all but one - presumably this is not necessary for SM?

Not sure about this. In my case, with two screens connected, Recovery will show up on one of them.

I just tried safe mode myself on a fresh installation of macOS 12.5.1, and it does what you described. In fact, the problem is that it causes a kernel panic with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement. Perhaps the reason is because ASPP-Override (required since macOS 12.3) doesn't get loaded in safe mode... In any case, you can still enter safe mode by setting DummyPowerManagement to true (make sure to only use this temporarily).

you were 100% correct on the battery. even though it was showing 3.05v i changed it for a new one which reads 3.1v and presto!!!! champion

I ended up having to reinstall Windows due to having installed Home edition and not realizing it did not support the dual CPU's. I installed Pro edition and had no audio or Bluetooth as before. I then installed the "AppleBluetoothBroadcomInstaller64" from the Brigadier flash drive I created when I had ran that process before. That got Bluetooth enabled. I then installed the "RealTek Setup" driver and audio now works. Besides the driver for my ATTO network card, which I got from their website, all other drivers installed automatically.

One question though. I DO want to install the AMD driver and software from their support site for my RX 580 card correct? I saw that Windows had put in a driver of some sort automatically, but I would think having the AMD software would be the way to go.

Thanks for your help once again. :)

Either way should be fine. I haven't had any problems with the AMD driver that Windows retrieved automatically.

I just tried to install 12.5.1 but it errored and now I get the infinite reboot loop. I Tried making changes to my OC install and now I get no boot GUI. I put in my original GPU and now see a grey screen.

I removed my SSDs and it’s picked up a HDD version of big sur and booted that.

I updated OC and plist on via bigsur. I then plugged my SSD in with the failed 12.5.1 and get the infinite loop with the occasional “your computer restarted because of a problem” screen

I see the installer on restart which I assume is the failed 12.5.1 install but selecting that it drops out quickly and restarts.

Where to now?

Any help would be appreciated. Hardware is MacPro 5,1 2012.

Had a failed 12.5.1 OTA update today with my main Mac Pro, crash dumped while half way updating.

Lost a lot of time trying to get it working again without messing any of my data unsuccessfully. Booted my High Sierra blade, downloaded 21G83 full installer, made a createinstallmedia USB installer, nuked one of my blades and successfully did a clean install that seems to be working.

Btw, this is the link for the Monterey 12.5.1/21G83 full installer:

Mine did too, but different cause I think. Windows would boot fine but could not get the update to complete, just turned into a boot loop.

What tipped me off to mine being different was that I couldn't even do a fresh install on another drive. Ended up doing an NVRAM reset, that fixed that issue, so then I tried my original drive again and the update completed and the system is normal again.

12.5.1 just KP'd on me after running it a few days. I wasn't here when it happened, I was out of the house, so I have no idea what caused it.

FYI

Seems like there might be another AVX usage case in there perhaps.

I'm glad that I did not install it then. I almost did the other day, but decided to hold off. I believe I have automatic updates turned off as well. Not at home right now, so can't check.

When I booted again it also got stuck on the progress bar about half way through and I had to power cycle the machine, and then it booted up. I read some reports of others on the other Monterey thread having similar random Boot up issues with 12.5.1. I usually leave the machine running for weeks at a time without a reboot, so I had not encountered that before this time.

I have since reflashed my never-booted rom just to see if it needed that... but anyway, heads up to all.. Something might be Amis with 12.5.1. I unfortunately already wrote over my 12.5 backup, so It will be a PITA for me to rollback at this point. I will run it a while and see if it happens again or more info comes out about 12.5.1. As I understand it there was some kind of security high priority need to get 12.5.1 updated, Apple sent out an iOS update at the same time. So... if there is an issue with 12.5.1, hopefully we can get to the bottom of it. I have a feeling 12.5.x will be the end of the road for 5,1 Mac Pro.

I hate to ask, so I am going to tell some jokes.

I think I know the answer, but the RISK LEVEL means I have to make sure. Gotta bring the risk down down down.
The question is: do I have what I need to make the right kind of mojave bootable for my cheese grater?

BRIEF BACKGROUND
The last time I installed an OS on my cheese grater was Catalina 15.4. I got through it, but it is not like I a contender for a medal in this event. PatcDude was my savior as were many of his thousands of goodly apostles. At this time, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you. [small] Thank you.

I heard a rumor that having bootable thumb of Mohave is basic a survival gear for members of the cheese grating league.

So, I downloaded the 6+G verstion of the Mojave installer from Apple. So, I have this right, there are three commands to run through terminal to make this 6+G of mojave into an installer app on my cheese grater, thanks to the miracle that is Critical Core. All that is documented so I should be good.

THE CRUCIAL QUESTION
But, there is a last step. That mojave installer bootable app needs to be on a thumb drive. I think. To do that, what? Format and copy the app onto a thumbable? Something else?

Anyone who answers this question correctly I will owe a $million.

p.s. When I just downloaded the Mojave six gigger, it did this right t the end:

Does that meanI am dead already?

I have a feeling 12.5.x will be the end of the road for 5,1 Mac Pro.

I'm having issues with 12.5.1 even with fully supported Macs, from the get go I've noticed that the boot time with a MacPro6,1 at least doubled, so, I don't think that this one is a MacPro5,1 related issue (or just a MacPro5,1 issue).

While I don't have much time available right now to track/debug, I double checked my config.plist and enabled verbose boot hoping that I stumble with some clue as where the problem is located at least, you should do the same.

Make sure to get the full installer. From your screenshot, it looks like you are going through Software Update. Since you're currently using Catalina, you'll need to create a bootable installer:

You can then boot this installer and install Mojave to another external or internal drive to use as your safety net. Good luck!

Note: If you require further assistance, please look for a related thread (or create your own), because this really off topic here...

Just had another KP, I was away from my desk again so I have no idea what caused it. It might be the screensaver, though the screensaver seems to work ok when I'm here. The other thing I'm questioning is Parallels, which I usually have running in the background with Windows10.

when I came back to the desk. the screen was black, computer light still on, no response to keyboard or mouse. When I hit the power button I didn't have to hold it down in order to turn off, one click shut off the computer immediately.

Regarding Boot up, this time I Used cmd-V to see the verbose screen, which goes too fast to read anyway. Main reason is because I read on the Monterey thread that people who have been having problems booting are somehow able to avoid the boot up problems by booting in verbose mode.

In case anyone can make sense out of it, here is KP report:

Code:
