MBP Return or not return(pic included)

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post here, however I have been reading this forum for longer than a year now.

Today, my new MBP C2D 2.33, glossy screen, 160 HDD arrived. I am a newbie trying an OSX and if it is good I will move to it from Windows(Admin level-power user).

Everything looks great except that the laptop screen has a big gap when it is closed. You can see it on the picture bellow.

The screen seems ok, no dead pixels and I don't see problems with backlight so it would not bug me even if I have them.

However, the gap issue really bugs me. This fault has been reported many times and I was unable to find the pictures from other users to determine if my case is normality or a savvier case.
Please, by looking at the photos would you consider this gap too big and I need to send it back?

I have not noticed any noise issues from the computer
When DVD is inserted: there are 3 load clicks and after that the noise is the same as in all other dvdroms. The clicks remind me the noise of the cassette player when you start it. Is it normal to have this clicks?

Gaps seem to be somewhat normal (normal as in seen regularly not meaning they should be there). I really don't think this is a reason to return it.

I am fairly sure the noise in the DVD/CD ROM you are hearing is normal.

yeah man if that was closed all the way you would scratch the screen the only reason it dosent close is because the little pads at the top of the screen. and as far as the noises from the drive those are normal mines really loud, but i have an ibook

Sadly i think i i might have some bad news for you.

I posted a topic basically like this a little while back and even though the members of this forum thought that the gap was too big the Apple authorized seller/fixer-upper thought otherwise.

Sorry about the bad pics but to give you a sense of it's size...it's approx. as big as one cd and one peice of paper.

That is too sad, on the left I have one cd gap and right side is 1 cd plus 2 normal A4 papers.

I totally agree with you. OMG A FEW MMs OF GAP *Commits suicide* You guys should see the gap on my iBook. I don't mean to sound rude but DAMN!

And to the person complaining about his gap being the thickness of a piece of paper... you realize that a piece of paper is 3/1000" thick right?

Even if you did pay 2000+ for this computer, perfection does not exist even though we want it to. The only way for it to be as close to perfect the way you want it to be is for the machine to be completely hand made, well sorry but the parts are machined and then put together in such as way to keep costs down... if it wasn't for this you would be paying 5000+ for your so called "perfect" computer. You should be thanking Apple for saving you money in a not so obvious way.

EDIT: Does that gap make the MBP run slower? Does it cause the MBP to crash, kernel panic, fail to charge, commit suicide? Will it wake up at night and eat your brains? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then let it go and get a life.

UPDATE: MBP C2D has ONE dead pixel. It is red and is at the bottom where iTunes icon is.

When I put screen to black, at the top left corner. I have some green pixels there, alot actually. But they don't show up at any other colour.

There's some standard for LCDs, if you have a certain number of dead / stuck pixels it will be replaced. Check with Apple on that.

You'd need like 7 dead/stuck pixels to officially receive a replacement. But if you bitch and moan to Apple, they might let you replace it...

30k - good for you.
I wonder if you know what design fault is. You spend this money on appleto get the quality, otherwise I would get dell or something else.

You know there are bad apples in apple community, aswell. There is a good rule of thumb 'if you don’t have anything valuable to add to the conversation, be silent.'

You have to realize there is some resistance to the lcd so it can spring up when you press the release. So obviously they dont want to spend the time to engineer the case to be precisely even all around.

I'll bet if there wasnt any spring or resistance on the screen someone would complain that their LCD doesnt "pop" up when the button release is pressed.

for me, its a squeaky spacebar, which seems to be an issue...and an annoying one at that because I code java and write up essays. I've read that apple does take the time to fix it. its squeaking right now as i type this. But i am not even considering returning it. I love it..despite the bird chirping from my keyboard.

Well - you tweaked MovieCutter a bit - but I agree - there are treatments available for OCD. These things are tools - not works of art for heaven's sake. I run my business on Macs and have had overall great luck with the quality.

Over reading these threads can cause one to look and look and look for perfection. Do I run pixel check when I buy one - NO!!! If I can't see them with a few quick checks of solid color backgrounds, a quick look for cosmetic damage / build quality, then I am good to move on to the real issues of COMPUTER PERFORMANCE (and a normal expectation for buzz / whine / heat / moo / whatever.

I have NEVER measured any of my screens for gaps - absurd behavior IMO. A lot more income can be earned USING these great Macs than can be earned obssessing over them.

How long have you had yours? I will have had mine a month tomorrow. My space bar was rather squeaky when I got it. There is no squeak any more. Hope yours wears in too.

same, i received mine around the beginning of November...its still squeaking. I'll just take it in this weekend. I noticed it maybe 2 weeks into using it.

if i press a cm from the right side, it squeaks consistently. Every time.

someone mentioned that it takes the apple store a few minutes to fix. Better them than me. I dont want Apple to have an excuse not to fix it should i screw something up if i try it myself.

Mine probably has the same amount of gap, however when mine is closed the right side sits nearly flush, and the left has the gap in it. But oh well, it doesn't hurt a thing to have it like that.

To be honest, I would seriously hope Apple would not return a computer for that. It would set a bad precedent that people could just return something that is perfectly functional for any little thing. If your lid was warped or something to where the screen was being messed up, then yes, by all means return it. As it looks to me now, it would be silly to try to find one that would be absolutly perfect, and my bet is that machine doesnt even exist.

I completely agree. In my case I'am happy with a hardware right now. I would not buy it if the performance was bad.
Unfortunately, LCD has one dead and 5-8 ( not all of them are very bright) green ones on black or light blue background on the left side.
So I think I would call for replacement.

Did you miss the part where he states that he has a lot of green pixels!!! Quit railing on the guy just b/c he values the worth of his purchase. Especially since he is new to Apple. I bet if you had 1 red pixel and a lot of green stuck pixels, you'd be the first one in line to get your diapers changed. Sorry for the attitude but man what's your deal. Your comments don't contribute anything but only leave a bad taste in people's mouth. All you had to say was that it was no big deal and that he shouldn't return it.

Anyway Grum, the gap is no biggie, but if you have a bunch of stuck pixels, return it. There are several stuck pixel programs you could try out too.

Even a newbie has to defend himself. Though I never expected that I would need to do that here...

To clarify something, new MBP is a toy that I bought to play with OSX, I intend to use it at home and if I don't like the OSX than use it as a normal PC with Vista. It was not purchased to make money and not a tool for work in my case. I need MBP because I need it to be vista compatible and support 30 inch dell. As a toy it should be satisfying in all cases design and hardware. (like a Porsche that people drive on Sundays to enjoy themselves) . May be I am too critical, just expect to much from apple… It is good, but as practise and this forum shows definitely not perfect.
