I tend to have 3 Virtual Desktops per monitor and I'd guess that that really increases GPU memory.
I am hovering around 8-9GB with one 4k in...

I'll plug in the second and see how I go today....

No thanks, not updated in two years nor apple silicon native, looks like badware/adware

The monitor theory doesn't hold...

System stable with one 4k Monitor: 8.5GB used

Plugged in 2nd 4k monitor: 9.1GB used - only desktop

Moved 1 tab of safari to second monitor: 9.3GB

Moved apps and tabs between monitors: spike in memory to 10GB.

55 tab Browser panel moved to 2nd 4k monitor: 9.5GB memory used.

2nd 4k Panel unplugged: 9.1 stable.

All monitors unplugged: 8.9GB.

I hooked my 2021 MacBook Pro up to a Dell U2720Q via USB-C cable and WindowServer was about the same at 900 MB. The Dell U2720Q is a 4k monitor. I was running at native resolution.

I think it’s a memory leak which pools over time. This is after 2 days of uptime - my other screenshot was just over a week.
Maddening, really, especially since the system gets unstable as window server consumes more and more RAM.

My usual uptime is between OS updates, so ~1 month. Never had this issue prior to 12.0 (though of course other issues sometimes arose).
My setup is a Belkin TB3 dock & a Dell P2415Q (4K) monitor.

It's definitely possible. I was only testing to see if memory use goes up with external monitors and I also wanted to test the black external monitor problem. I am not set up to use the laptop with an external display for long periods of time. It's possible that it's a particular program that you're running. There is something leaking memory on my system but it isn't WindowServer.

I imagine Apple will get around to fixing these problems. In the meantime, I'll just reboot once a week or ten days.

This is ridiculous. 32GB of RAM and it’s hitting yellow memory compression. All Apple Silicon native apps.
12.3.1 is out and hopefully fixes this...

Systemstats was up to 22gb ram use on a Mac with 16gb ram yesterday.

macOS Vista is really, really getting annoying.
Woke up my Macbook Air today with systemstats at 64GB and it has been almost as bad on my M1 iMac. Just updated it to 12.3.1 and hoping that fixes it.

Hopefully optimistic. This is with a similar workload as before, with 2 days of uptime. Leaks *seem* to have been fixed with 12.3.1.

I'm on 12.4, fresh installed (the computer is a week old), and my UI suddenly got real laggy today. Windowserver was over 900mb and climbing rapidly. Force quitting the process brought it back down to ~350mb and fixed the UI lag.

Keeping an eye on it, but doesn't seem fixed.

Some of the memory leaks have been fixed and I'd say that I don't think that I have any remaining issues but I've seen some people with the Windowserver problem and that issue seems pretty extreme.

Something that I never use.

Doesn't sound like it's the windowserver problem though. I had the windowserver using up a GB of RAM on the original version and it looked related to external monitors. So I stopped using external monitors and I didn't have the problem again. I've heard that they fixed most of the problems with external monitors. Clearly some problems remain.

I think there is still something and they are aware of it as its got better but from my perspective a lot of it was been native apps over intel apps. I still think Windowserver and some very deep bug is an issue.

My Finder went off the charts today and I don't even use the search function like that article suggests. Had two windows open tops. Hogged over 1GB. Relaunched and it's back to 40mb.

Well we are also in that stage where there is 'core rot' of problems that seem to pop up regularly, hence why many ask for a revision of Mac OS just to bug solve or spread out the releases so we get better releases.

The other is that I think until Intel CPU's are probably phased out we probably are going to see some weird bug's because Apple is not focused on solely one OS version.

Personally I think we need to slow down releases and bug solve more.

Even though I never felt like I had something memory leaking, and having 64 GB of RAM made it difficult to notice, "WindowServer" was making my life a nightmare the past few weeks. It would cause the Mail app to crawl sometimes. Force quitting it fixes the issue for now.
