Medical imaging processing, data analytics, things like that.
So for sure owc is aware of this situation and will ship 4 identical modules in a 32GB kit? (8 x 4) so there should be no problem with dual channel at full speed right?

New iMac i9. installed 4x16gb OWC memory. Computer wouldn't boot.
Took two of them out and put them in 1/3 and then again 2/4. It booted.
Called OWC and said two sticks must be bad, so they sent me 4x16 more.
Tried all 8 sticks in various ports and it won't boot.

Most I can get is 2x16gb out of the entire set.

Should I return the computer? Bad slots? Or is it for sure the memory?

Seems odd that 8 sticks from the same manufacturer can't get 4 of them to work.

Steve

Several of us have had this issue. for me and some others it was a kernel panic right out of the box and again when the new memory was installed. I tried many things including resetting the pram etc. Now it just works no matter what confoguration of memory i stick in. So I’m back to the regularly scheduled program of how to install my memory for the highest speed.

About OWC being aware. They have no excuse not to know by now, however, they are still selling a 96gb option that is clearly miss matched simms.

So are you saying crucial is best to go with to avoid any issues?

Im on the phone with OWC. They are checking about the question of getting 4 identical chips and just verified tgat they have now seen the Apple new advice and are working to make sure all 4 chips match. i told them that they should look at this thread and jump in and clarify things. I also suggested that they quit offerring a 96gb option as it makes them appear unknowledgeable.

I bit the bullet and will return everything and ordered 4x32gb From OWC.

I spoke to them earlier today as well and they said they were NOT aware of this issue.

Did you buy a kit or were they individually purchased 16GB modules?

Crucial or Samsung. Crucial has certified Mac RAM if that matters to you (it does not to me so I got Samsung DIMMs and am running 128GB in dual channel, full speed).

I will point out for anyone worried about needing to buy all the RAM they might possibly need now, although RAM prices definitely go in cycles and older RAM can be harder/more expensive to source as it becomes more rare, in this case, I wouldn’t worry too much. Buy what you can afford/need. In the future, if you want to add more and want the best performance, if you can’t get an identical kit or sticks that match what you buy today, it is very likely prices will be lower and you can just replace your RAM next time for less than what you would pay today.

I would have been fine with 64GB of RAM (I had 48GB in my 2017 iMac) but Amazon screwed up so I got 128GB instead.

What kind of geekbench scores are you getting now?

Ah, so it’s likely that the 2 separate 32GB kits you got were different, that’s probably why it didn’t work out right?
Its more complex than that. I damaged a 32gb stick while swapping from my 2019 imac to the 2020 imac. So i ordered a single 32gb stick and 2x16gb before i knew that they had to match. The 2 x 32gb are a different manufacturer, they work fine and fast in mt 2019 machine and poir and slow in the 2020.

I see, If I order a 32GB Kit from OWC (4 x 8gb) I shouldn’t have a problem right? I called owc today and they said that as long as the 4 Modules are from a kit then they will be by the same manufacturer and identical with even matching serial numbers as they will be from the same batch.

So four identical modules by same brand and the iMac didn’t accept them? How did you fix it?

So you had your confirmation....
That’s why they said on the phone, they said they have different chips, some hysex, some micron and some owc’s own chips and they can’t guarantee which ram brand you will get but if a kit is purchased they said all 4 modules will be identical In terms of the brand within the kit.

Exactly what I previously said ...

Why did SteveD123 in this thread a problem then? He had four identical modules from OWC and he said his iMac didn’t boot
Bad stick is always something possible.

And the fact I don't like OWC :)

lol.

Being a whore of DRAM chips brands isn't very winner for any RAM manufacturer. But that's exactly what OWC does. Even Kingston doesn't make this and have locked BOM (at least for ValueRAM server, but it wouldn't surprise me they do the same for system specific RAM).

The question is this though, assuming all 4 Ram modules are identical, Is ram produced by Micron better than Hynix Produced Ram or is there no difference?

I'd be curious to email Kingston to know if they have locked BOM for Apple certified memory.

EDIT : Done.

Hi,

I would like to know if Apple certified memory, like part # KCP426SD8/32, has a locked bill of material (BOM). It appears that 2020 iMac 27" is picky about DRAM chip manufacturer, making impossible the mix of Hynix and Micron DRAM chip across memory channels without automatically downclocking memory frequency.

Is it possible to know if KCP426SD8/32 always use Hynix or Micron memory or if this part number has multiple DRAM chip suppliers ?

Thank you very much,

Pierre-Luc Delisle
