Learning from iPad WiFi

Does anyone remember the time span between when credit cards were charged, and the iPad shipped, for iPad WiFi?

My credit card shows pending purchase today, but I don't know if that has always been there and rolling forward, nor do I know what this may mean for ship time.

Seems odd to me that Apple would send out that reassuring email this morning if they just planned on shipping later today/early tomorrow.

Upgraded by Apple to Priority

Just thought I would update that Apple just updated me to priority shipping today as well. Ordered April 14th. This has to be a good sign for things to start happening soon imho.

Well in my case it did show up. I used a Visa Credit Card and it shows a pending charge for my iPad 64GB 3G. My available balance went down too. This all happened just before I rec'd the letter from Apple that I would get it by End of April confirmation. But regards to Debit cards, Apple does not know it is a debit by looking at the number so I really don't follow you. Even Debit cards could get a pre-authorization in my eyes.

It's not an Apple thing.. it's a credit card vs. debit card thing. Typically, a charge will hit the account directly and immediately on a debit card.

Go to a store, buy some milk on the debit card, and get on your online banking page, and you'll see the transaction within minutes after you buy it.

With a credit card, they typically run it all in batches during the night, so transactions do not show up right away.

So what I'm saying is that AMEX cards all over were likely billed today, and when AMEX runs their processes, it will show on peoples' accounts tomorrow.

Apple could not care less whether they are charging a debit or credit card. It's what happens after Apple charges it that affects whether you see it today or later. Most debit card holders are seeing it now, while many people on here are not seeing it on their AMEX or other credit card.

Not really that odd since they changed the date for new orderes to 5/7, all they are trying to do is mitigate likely phone calls from all those people who ordered before today.

can you imagine all the calls customer service would have received if the email did not go out clarifying the change on the website. When I got up I checked the website and saw the change and immediately thought about calling apple after I got the kids to school. I did not immediately think to check my bank account for pending charges for clarification on the date changed by apple. Then I got the email... so I did not need to call. Just thinking that might be the driving force. What you all think? :)

I used a debit card (regions bank) and there is still no charge to my acct. I ordered 4/3 and got the still-shipping-late-April email this morning.

I think that with the wifi models, they shipped out on a Monday and UPS delivered them on Saturday. Do you guys think that it's going to be the same thing this time around with people getting their shipments on Saturday from China?? Or Monday From China?

Mike

Well I ordered the Wi-Fi version as well and when I got mine on Sat 4/3 it was actually scanned in China on 3/30 Tuesday night at 9:15 pm China time for the departure scan. And I got it delivered by UPS at noon on Saturday. Hard to say but I think later tonight or in the middle of the night it will go to Prepared for shipment, and then be shipped tomorrow sometime, China time. It could even get here on Friday but that is speculation like everything else. :p

Sure, I see that. I just am skeptical that the majority of iPad purchasers are also furiously refreshing the Apple store to see if ship times have changed.

People on Macrumors–they notice, but then again we are already refreshing our online banking statements.

Seems to me that you send that email out if you are still a few days (maybe a week) away from shipping, because the Apple Store ship times will find their way to mainstream press in 24 hours or so. However, that seems contrary to the fact that my CC has a pending payment.

agreed, I see what you are saying. :) BTW My debit card still has not had a pending charge... my bank is weird. I will probably see the pending charge after midnight tonight... that is typical of my bank... with my debit card.

I was charged for the Apple Care that I ordered for my 3G unit, I figure that has to be somewhat significant. I'm hoping for delivery sometime later this week, maybe Friday or Saturday.

If Saturday it means I'll have to go to work for a while, at least until the iPad arrives. The company doesn't mind and I collect some overtime so its not all bad.

I could care less about O2 ... since AT&T is the default iPhone U.S. carrier, thank you. Apple's inaction and ambivalence towards tethering speaks about as loud to me as AT&T's greed. And I'm the jerk? :D

Apple is in a position to influence AT&T and chooses not to. If I am an iPhone subscriber, why should I have to pay twice as much for unlimited data? I certainly wouldn't be using twice the data if I were using the phone to tether the iPad. It makes no sense.

Do you even know how business works? Yes, Apple is in a position to "influence" AT&T. In fact, they do this alot with EVERYONE. They're widely known as a company that likes to manipulate other companies.

Either way- iPhones currently have the ability to tether. It is AT&T's decison not to. My guess is that Apple doesn't make any money off of data charges, since what I've heard is that AT&T buys the iPhones at outrageous prices in order to keep the exlcusivity, which is why iPhone bills are more expensive than regular data plans-They're making up for the prices they pay per phone.

Apple makes a great device-They aren't in the business of the data. They leave that to their affiliated networks.

Are you twelve? Why are you yelling loudly "ITS APPLE ITS APPLE NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAHHH!"

I don't know about you, but I'll be using twice if not MORE data on my iPad than i do on my iPhone.

Apple only charges your card when item is shipped.
iPads coming from China via FedEx.

They can charge your card a few days BEFORE it ships. They're not even prepared for shipment yet.

Just look at what happened with the WiFi iPads and you'll know what to expect.

You seem so sure that they're shipping... Have you received a notice that the rest of us haven't gotten?

Not really. I don't need to buy the 3G iPad if I can tether the Wi-Fi-only iPad to an iPhone. Buy a 3G iPad and pay for your own plan if you don't have an iPhone or don't care to tether. As for those who already have an iPhone and data plan, your example is moot for the wi-fi-only iPads.

Thanks, but I don't think you understood what I was getting at.

I was trying to answer a question about why AT&T would not offer an Unlimited Data Plan that would cover both an iPad and an Iphone for one $30 fee. Again, it could be because the iPad and iPhone could be used at the same time by two people in the same family or...the iPad could be sold and used by the buyer with an agreement that the seller would leave it on his data plan thereby "cheating" AT&T. I don't see how your answer has anything to do with what i was talking about, since what I was talking about has nothing to do with tethering or with Wifi-only iPads.

Charged!

Apple charged my card for my 64GB this morning but just showed up. The time the charge was processed was the same time I got my "magical" email, 4:59 AM. FYI I have a us bank platinum visa CREDIT card. Hooray!

I am jealous!! I want proof that my long-awaited ipad 3G is on it's way!! Congrats!! Are you doing the happy dance?!:D

Has anyone used Bill Me Later for their iPad 3G purchase? I did and it was, until recently, under pending transaction. A few days ago, it just disappeared. I'm kind of worried about it but I'm figuring it just has to do with an imminent charge to the account.

So...?

Does this mean that by May 7th the iPad 3G will be in stores? I didnt pre-order mine the first day because I wanted to buy it at the store but now I wish I would have. I was really hoping to get mine before April was out. :(

Weird how the email and charge process the same time. Maybe if the card gets approved they send the email!

Happy dance? I'm on the table dancing to this:

ohhhh now that is hilarious! I know you are a MAC guy but for some reason I see you dancing like the PC guy. I know that I will be doing that happy dance when I see my pending. The PC guy is too funny. But I know we are supposed to be on the side of the Mac man. That just made my day... even without my pending charge. Did you see the sequel to that video?
