Also, im almost sure that t-zones is GPRS, not edge. I remember on my razr v3t, it didnt use edge when on t-zones.

I do not know.... nor do I know how to tell for sure. I am on TZones.... and I have an "E" in a square blue box on my header strip. I just assumed that meant "Edge."

If there is an easy test, let me know- I will run it!

Why is t-mobile's EDGE faster than AT&T? I was assuming slow data speed was a limitation of EDGE technology and not the company serving it.

T-Zones is considerably slower than the Total Internet plan. Check your speeds at iphonespeedtest.com

Total Internet has hotspots, and very fast EDGE. T-Zones is also difficult to get working because of the proxy, and it is possibly T-Mobile is discontinuing the T-Zones pacakage

t-zones edge is slighty slower than total internet in theory cause you are passing thru a proxy server but the difference in speed is within the ranges you get on edge networks which makes it negligible. getting the proxy working on iphone is not difficult at all but it isnt an on/off switch either (its just copying a file to a folder and restarting the iphone, after jaibreaking it and all), also i think you are grandfathered in with t-zones if you sign up for the service, they may discontinue adding new users but they cant kick off new users.

btw: i recommend jailbreaking your iphones and using the summerboard app and installer app... makes NOKIA's symbianOS 9.1~9.3 look like moto razrs

I had installed the iPhone software unlock using the Unlock.app process. After going to Settings>General>Network>EDGE I changed APN to wap.voicestream.com, and deleted the entries in Username & Password, leaving them blank. I disabled my WiFi network to test. Went to Safari & I was able to surf no problem using T-zones/Edge. I also could check mail, use Maps etc. No Problems.

Now mind you, I had already jointed AT&T and activated my phone before all this. Then when I wanted to dump AT&T after a month & go back to T-mobile, I reinitialized my phone & started the Unlock.app process. I had no problems. Worked like a charm.

Now, my partner just bought an iPhone because I was able to unlock mine. His is not able to use Edge yet, even though he too has T-zones. Only difference is ... he never unlocked his phone with AT&T.

Now a few days after unlocking my phone with Unlock.app, my TurboSIM came in. Again, I reset my phone and started with the TurboSIM unlock. That to worked without a hitch. I am able to use my T-zones/Edge no problem.

So draw from this what you like. New phone NOT activated and used on the AT&T edge network ... can't use Edge with T-mobile & T-zones. My iPhone activated with AT&T and used on Edge, then initialized & unlocked with two different methods, can use T-zones. Hmmm ... go figure!

Okay now ....discuss. :)

sometimes t-zones works (or used to work) without the proxy server... i was lucky to have my t-zones working without the proxy until i abused it by downloading hundreds of MBs of mp3s using symella for SymbianOS. and t-mobile caught on and proxied my connection.

I understand the challenge of unlocking the iPhone, but I don't get all the trouble with features, extra work to get it to work, trouble to come with all the new firmware updates, voiding your warranty, and possibly having your sim deactivated at the carrier's whim. What are you getting in return? My family plan with $20 unlimited data seems very competitive and I personally hate T-mobie and Verizon's service and coverage. What am I missing??

If you currently have a t-mobile contract you can now enjoy iPhone. t-mobile has a slightly better package....but like I said, theyre basically the same difference...unless you get the 5.99 internet. That's really not a bad price!

Is it worth it....I don't know. I'm thinking about rolling the dice though. I'm on day 23 with my AT&T contract. If t-mobile EDGE is faster and I could tether to a Macbook, I'm making the move. Plus, I don't think t-mobile gets nearly as many dropped calls or failed calls.

EDGE speed should be the same. If one is slower/faster than the other, than network coverage is the determing factor.

Tethering works on both Tmobile and AT&T. You're using the same EDGE connection to do it. You just have to hack the phone a bit.

Yea, you're right. It's definitely rolling the dice....we'll see if Apple gives the big FU to AT&T but I'm doubting it. They get royalties from the carriers even though its unsubsidized.

Apple would sell a hell of a lot more iPhones if they were unlocked though.

Well I paid 10.73 for a year of service with tmobile. On prepaid once your gold(over $100 added) you get a free year of service with every addition, the smallest being 10+tax. 10 cents a minute calls, 10 cent out going and 5 cent incoming text. Can't beat that with a stick.

*watches everyone go red over thier first at&t bill being over $100 alone*

One of my phones with TMo is 9.95 a month. I also have 1000 shared minutes, n/w/m2m free- 49.99. Add in tZones, I am at 55 a month, half of ATT charges. So I have good reasons to be with TMo. I also LOVE there Service, and have great coverage.

Is the t-zones @5.99 per phone or per plan? I'm assuming it's per phone. I'm with T-Mobile now (1000 min. family share, 2 phones) and don't want to switch to AT&T. I'm also I'm well past my contract on both phones.

I'm assuming that T-Mobile will have no problem turning on t-zones even though my phone isn't 'Internet-Capable'. I would think T-Mobile would be thrilled to get as many iPhone unlock customers as possible with the exception of overloading bandwidth which I doubt will be a problem.

My only concerns are if the phones become 're-locked' and how much better iPhone 2.0 would be. Also, warranty issues if you're not signed up with AT&T. I just need to do it or stop thinking about it.

I don't have any kind of t-mobile service, so what do I need to get from them to use the $5.99 plan?
Thanks

i'm thinking about getting a iphone and i'm already with ATT with contract. will the iphone run better with T Mobile or ATT as far as web, email etc...any input is much appreciated.

If you're asking about download speeds, it really varies where you're at. At least with AT&T you can get visual voice mail. T-Mobile doesn't offer any additional iPhone features. The reasons to unlock an iPhone and use it at T-Mobile would be if you're already a T-Mobile customer, or don't want to switch to AT&T from T-Mobile or another iPhone compatible regional carrier.

I can also get a lower monthly bill by staying with T-Mobile.

T-Zones

I just got the iPhone a few days ago.....followed the instructions to get it going on T-Mobile (from modmyiphone.com)....signed up for the 5.99 T-Zone plan, and everything seems to be working OK...although the EDGE speed has been EXTREMELY slow when switched over to it...
I have a question as well.....I bought one of the text messaging packages from T-Mobile, but have been unable to successfully text to anyone (using the SMS menu button...getting error messages)....Is there some trick I need to know about regarding texting from an iPhone?....Do I need to change some settings (i.e. ports?)....
Be curious to know if anyway has any experience with this.....Thanks!

Bought my iPhone a few days ago and unlocked it for T-Mobile. I have the MyFaves 300 Plan for $39.99 with the $5.99 T-Zones option as well as the $4.99 500 text messages option. Everything is working great, and I'm loving the iPhone.

Hmm.. not that I know of. It just 'worked' for me once I unlocked my iPhone. What error messages do you get?

Cant figure out how to get it all working

I just bought an unlocked iphone, I can recieve calls with tmobile, but the maps isn't working and I cant hear a damn thing when I answer a call without the speaker phone on.

Any tips?
