One thing this new device will do, is have developers create some revolutionary apps, that just dont fit on an iPhone screen. Things like music editing, photshop and design applications. I was initially put off by what I saw, but when you think of the possibilities, and the limitations a 3.5" screen created for developers, then you have to say this might be real cool. Lets see if they present any cool apps today.

No flash = best decision ever.

Flash should die. For ever.

I'm not a particular lover of flash. A third of the malicious code on web pages is flash code. But the fact remains that at least 1 in 20 websites are flash based without malicious code. This isn't going to change in the near future.

I certainly want a safe web browsing experience. My Macbook Pro has thge ability to play flash and block malicious code. My iPhone apparently does not have that capability. But the iPad should have had this ability - if it was truely supposed to be the device Apple wants it to be.

So I'll agree that flash should die. But until it is dead, let me view the web pages that still use it.

You obviously don't know about my internet using habits... I browse the internet and the sites I use and see, DO NOT require flash, so when I views them on my iPhone, no problem...

If I want to see Youtube, well we have an app for that...

Many web developers have added code to their sites that can tell if you are browsing from an iPhone or iPod TOuch. It re-directs you to a non-flash versio of their site. It is usually an abbrevated version of their site. This is fine for browsing on the iPhone, but is not the full experience the website developer is offering.

Ummm no, I don't view mobile versions, I always see the full blown site....

The iPad looks to be a really neat device, and there is no doubt it will make bank for Apple, Inc.

But, I love my 13-inch MBP. It is actually not much bigger than the iPad, and there are really no limitations as it is a fully functioning computer. It looks like Jobs was trying to avoid the "netbook' market, and he has succeeded.

Can't wait to check one out, not buying though.

good for an ereader

I looked at ereaders over the holidays and almost got the Nook until I heard about the Ipad being used as an ereader. I would get it just for an ereader. I will be going to Japan this year and it would be great for the trip. With the added plus of watching movies.

I have a 13 MBP but I really don't see me holding it for hours just to read a book.

I can't wait to see the price of it. That alone maybe a deal breaker right now.
I was hoping it had flash though, that will be missed.

If you're using your iPhone, you wouldn't have the option. I have developed a couple of websites. One was flash based that wouldn't allow for buttons to be pushed or displayed on the iPhone. I added the code to automatically redirect iPhones and iPod Touch to a non-flash site. The iPhone or iPod Touch does not have the option to view the flash site any longer with the code placed.

Try typing http://news.google.com in your iPhone. Type it in a computer. Does google look the same? Can you make google on your iPhone look like google on your desktop? They are not the same. Google has redirected you to their mobile version on your iPhone. It doesn't say so on the address bar, but it is not the same. You are not seeing the "full blown site".

How can it not support flash???

Because websites that rely on flash are going to be forced to update their sites to support the new standards.

Steve is winning this war... so if you have sites you use that rely on flash, tell them to "upgrade".

Well web site designers should design their sites for the widest possible audience. That is their job.

They will need to adapt.

They have more to lose by relying on Flash than apple does by not relying on it.

You SERIOUSLY overestimate Jobs, he's a big fish in a small pond. Especially with the iMaxipad.

I totally agree that designers should design for the the widest possible audience - and for the most satisfying viewer experience. Flash used to be the standard and some would say it still is. There were no problems for flash until the iPhone came along. Now the iPad. Steve Jobs wants to dictate the direction of computing. I don't fault him for that. Apple has set many computing standards for both hardware and software. I am an ardent Apple fan. That doesn't change the fact that flash is not going to go away soon. Costs in web redevelopment plus Apple's minority in browsers will hinder flash's demise.

I would buy an iPad today if I could have a complete browsing experience - today. I can accept re-directs and lack of full functionality on my iPhone. I still have my Macbook Pro for most surfing. But if the iPad does not allow 100% web compatibility and my primary purpose for it would be web surfing, why should I buy it? The answer is that I shouldn't. But the iPad is more than a netbook. Looking at the totality of the device, it's a nice toy. It's priced right. But this thread was about flash and the iPad doesn't support it.

I've gotten by with web surfing on my iPhone in parts of my house besides my office. Unfortunately, not having flash has really been an issue because most websites don't have an alternative so I have to stop what I'm doing and go up to my office to view the site.

I can accept this on a smartphone, but on a new device that is being sold as the "greatest way to surf the web" it is completely unacceptable.

I am truly starting to think they don't want people to be able to watch Hulu or other flash based players because they are afraid it might eat in to their iTunes TV show sales.

It has nothing at all to do with html5 and other web standards. No flash has EVERYTHING to do with hulu.com and addictinggames.com, or any other flash-based website that holds similar content to the iTunes store. Apple obviously does not want to allow mobile users to access media online that competes with their store.

I often hear about how cell companies should only provide the data, and not be the device dictator, too. Conflict of interest appears. Well, you have the same situation with Apple and their digital market.
